I think one of those reasons why the hairs styles are  so generic is because they are incredibly hard to model....especially women's hairstyles. The higher processing power from today's systems can make modeling them a bit easier, but modeling hairstyles has been an issue amongst developers for years. Women hairstyles are especially challenging.

You have to create the hairstyle itself, then factor in scenarios where depending on the hairstyle has to animate properly without it looking weird or out of place. I think for the most part, the hair styles, for both men and women have remained static regardless of the situation, (wind storm/rain) etc....my point is that developers produce styles that can they can get away with them being static and looking as natural as possible.

Not an expert on this topic by any means, it's just that over the years, it's been something i've seen from various developers complain or struggle with...

Considering that half of the cutscenes in DAI with Morrigan had her hair clipping through her cheek I don't think bioware cares about hair animating properly anymore

While not unimportant, this (hairstyles and such) is IMHO at the bottom of the pile of stuff that needs attention and/or fixing!

I mean I frankly don't care for "beauty-queen" hairstyles for female characters (IMHO it's quite unfair in today's military that women are given more freedom when it comes to grooming and hairstyles - men aren't allowed to grow long beards either, so why should women be allowed long hair? Not to mention that it's not worth it if you really are in combat (I personally wouldn't want to face complications because of my hair - note: I am a man and I've got long hair, but were I to join the military I'd cut it short and not only because it's required!) and frankly long hair requires a lot of grooming to look good, not to mention that short hair looks incredibly confident and tough if you are a woman (remember Colonel Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) in Stargate (TV-Show, not the movie)? I do, I had quite the crush on her as a teenager and damned did she look good with her short hair...her playing an alternate version of herself with long hair didn't click, damned she looked HOT!)), just like I don't care for beards for male characters! (Mine never have any, just like I myself seldom keep my beard - clean shave it is!)

greets LAX

ps: Same for "my female character walks like a man" - deal with it damned, she's a soldier, not a model on a catwalk!

The following quote sums it up pretty well for me: I don't want a female hero - I want a hero who just happens to be female (so no special treatment etc. - my characters make it on their own merit, not because some "affirmative action" BS (why BS? - Look at who earns most college degrees ATM and who drops out of high-school the most? - Hint: Women get the most degrees and boys drop out of school the most and are therefore more often unemployed etc.!)

You people and your "resources." How many "resources" do you expect to be diverted for a feature like that? I don't even get what you're trying to say. Are you going to blame the "Codsworth name-calling thing" if the game is underwhelming? "If only they'd spent those ~*resources*~ on something else!"

Well, someone hasn't heard of vague concepts such as "word count" and "fixed budget" :P

As much as I'd like to live in a fairy tale land where game developers have as much budget as they'd like and every silly little thing can get implemented, that's simply not how it works in the real world.

If I had to choose between, say, a few more conversations with important characters, or a useless feature that allows a robot pal to speak your name.. Well, that's an easy one.

Also, take your baseless assumptions out of here, please.

All I ask are some non-terrible hairstyles - Ryder's ponytail is a good start - a greater variety of hair colours - including highlights - and some basic body type options. Nothing too fancy - I know too much height variation, for example, can make cutscene framing difficult - but some basic muscle mass variations would be appreciated. I want my Ryder to have some soldierly 'swolness' going on.

A palette for hair similar to eye color in DA:I would be interesting. Maybe they could have a third slider for highlights and intensity.

It dosen't have to be Tomb Raider quality as I'm not sure Frostbite can do that but it would be nice to have something any improvement is better than nothing.

OP this is no tthe first time this topic has shown up I think Bioware are more than aware improvements in this area are required. We'll have to see what comes of it though but seeing that trailer with fem Ryder gives me hope that this is one area they've looked to improve in. Like you I too took to modding inorder to get better hairstyles on my characters. Thankfully I have a few really nice hairstyles to choose from now thanks to this. I still download a few here and there if I see one I like and think I might use. But yes I'd have prefered some of them to have been in the game in the first place or at least something similar.

I agree, DA2's hairstyles were pretty good (I loved Bethany's hairstyle) and they even moved a bit.

yeah I think it shows they can if they put the effort in the fact they have more powerful systems at their disposal now for MEA  and the fact they'er only focusing on human models for the CC should in theory make it easier as well. They'v included cloth physics in DAI it's just a case of expanding thatto the hair as wel if they want hair physics in. Based on the PGA game th eengine can do hair physics the only disappointing thing about it was the fact that there's not much there to play with in terms of options hopefully MEA can cover both. Although even if they don't give us hair physics at least better hairstyles should hopefully cover most of the problems

I don't know if anyone already touched upon this, but please Bioware, add more variety in the character customization in ME:A, especially for the female character. It was ridiculous that i had to add a mod of yennefer's hairstyle for my female Inquisitor in DAI, because 95% of the hairstyle offered in DAI was shared with the men's hairstyle. I know the game is in it's final stage, but damn it would be so good to see a whole lot of variety in the character customization.

Also, i'm not sure if it is possible, but in Fallout 4. the devs sort had a list of names that Codsworth can call you with, so if you call yourself in a name which is in the list, Codworth will call you in that name. Now i dunno if there's anything like Codsworth in ME:A, but it would be so cool to see a Mech call you by your name B)

Just as an FYI, you would find a lot of these threads by searching either "hair", "CC" or "Charactor Creator". "Customization" would also do wonders, no doubt.

Just saying.

I just hope we don't get the DAI shared hair. There was only one decent hair for the men and questionably one for women.

Plus they could of atleast sorted out the receding hairlines on the female versions...

Seeing as how we're limited to humans only, maybe free up body morphing customization then? I would love to make protags that are slender or tanky or meaty or waify, just anything but awkwardly bulky.

I like to see that selecting the gender of Ryder isn't cosmetic only. By that I mean that, besides customizing their looks, they also get different dialogue. At least some new dialogue would be appreciated. Both voices have to be recorded anyway, so it would be great if some of the lines were unique.

Maybe even some mutually exclusive missions or side quests unrelated to romances. It would be much like what DAI did for obtaining the support of the mages and templars, which had unique and detailed arcs for both. I really liked that.

Mutually exclusive story lines are not unique to DAI and have been done in other games as well. If I am not mistaken Dishonored 2 will feature two unique stories for the two main characters. Great for replay.

That's of course very expensive, but it could be done. Most likely it won't happen because of the cost, I am aware of that, but I love to see it.

Edit: After thinking about it some more I have made a thread about it, otherwise these ideas may derail this thread.

If they cut the 2 female and 2 male voices that DAI had to 1 each it may not be more expensive. maybe.

why in this day and age can you not scan your own face into the game?  That would be neat.

Those two were for English only (US and UK). Other languages had just one voice actor for each gender.

Yes. The English version was more expensive because of that.

Next to better hairstyles i am a bit concerned about the make-up options (or better: I wonder how they execute them). They felt very limited in DA:I (not that many choices) and i always had the feeling that eyeliner/eyeshadows were some kind of "thick" or had an awkward form  or the coloring was off (could be a personal thing. Liked it that you could scale them do be darker or lighter). I think blush, eyeliner etc. could add nice touches to a face with a wider range of colors (especially skinlike colors, freckles, dirt, moles etc. for both male and female, so that there would be no pink and violet gollum make-up :P). And I hope they don't look into the Fallout 4 - CC for Make up suggestions or hairstyles (the mods out there saved that thing :) The sliders were so-so in the original CC and DA:I.)

So my wishlist for ME:A -CC in general

-slider overhaul (they were okay in DA:I but sometimes i wished i could do a bit more of sliding)

- light options so that you see how your face/character looks with ingame lighteffects (night, evening, afternoon, morning, rain, thunder, snow, camp fire )

- posing/face mimics (smiling, be angry, be funny or stoic etc.)

- more variety and colors in face make - up (so that we could design real natural, ladylike or grundge/punk beauties in space.)

- color scaling (colorwheel or colorpalette for armor, hair, eyes & make up)

- more variety in hairstyles (i liked the Ryder pony tail) and hair colors (yeah let there be a colorwheel for hair)

- maybe some suggestions for highend armor or clothing (how we could look in the game at some point)

- variety of scars, tattoos, freckles or moles

- maybe sunburn?

- hm bodyslider...don't know if it is a must ( You have to program all the armor with body sliders too, so...as long as the original Ryder has no noodle arms, too broad shoulders, too much muscle or boobs which hang in the knees- sorry it is a german phrase that i can't translate to english well enough-...for me not that important but i understand the ones who wish for that because of immersion, personal taste etc.

That's not true at least for the german version. There are also two voices for female protagonist. For male I can't say for sure because I did not play a male in german.
