I'm not the biggest fan of crafting in computer games, but it seems like its going to be in MEA so I think its worth discussing how to maximise its beneficial qualities - allowing player control of stats and appearance of their character - while avoiding tedium.

I think DA:I had a pretty good system in principle, with the basic method of using schematics and then choosing materials. And that system can fit well with established ME systems if components.

What I don't want to have to do is have Ryder traipsing around planets picking up rocks. Instead they should be locating mineral deposits and other resources and marking them for other people to exploit. A mine (or whatever) should provide essentially unlimited supplies of the material, with additional mines of the same type reducing the cost because of greater supply.

Schematics shouldn't go obsolete and thus effectively deprive the player of appearance options. Either new schematics should be sidegrades, offering new options rather than necessarily better ones, or the original schematics should be possible to upgrade to represent the integration of Andromedan tech into existing Milky Way designs

I'd like to see some unique, powerful components that can't be duplicated, but can be reused. These would represent exotic technologies that we can use but don't understand fully enough to replicate, and would ideally have distinctive appearances.

I had huge fears when I read that MEA will focus on exploration and now crafting? This isnt DayZ or whatever else. They are missing the entire point of ME.

Yeah. I really liked Witcher 3, but if I had to play it without the weight mod? I would have not had near as much fun. Realism is cool and all to a point. That kind of stuff should have a toggle. I actually stopped playing (I bought it soon as it came out) when the mod would break to a patch until I could mod it in again lol.  That is a big reason I play on PC now and not consoles.

Also we had specialty weapons in ME and modding them. Was good enough for me. Widow and modding it was awesome.

I can see the point of crafting and bag space and all that when you have an in game MULTIPLAYER ECONOMY. A game like SWTOR. A game like WoW. In a single player game? Heck no. Give me some specialty weapons to "craft" and if you want you can hide the recipes around the galaxy, but even that is pointless. Cus someone can just turn a difficultly level down and use a crap weapon for longer than the game designers intended.

But "crafting" in a space age epic? Why cant you just buy a gun, or a backpack or whatever you need. Going to a planet to break some rock and voila out of nowhere an armor is made is stupid beyond belief.

I'm not the biggest fan of "crafting."

I'm a modern gal. I prefer to just skip on down to the store and buy what I need.

And, I swear, if MEA's crafting is anything like TW3's crafting, I'm gonna puke.

Yeah I agree. I thought the specialty weapons were great. Felt just as good about getting my Widow as I did Gryphon sword 3/4 or whatever it was. Bioware also did a really good job with the modding you could do to a weapon.

Oh and on Ilium in ME 2 some random Asari near the fish vendor said something like "that is a hell of a sniper rifle". Was a very cool random easter egg :).

Weapon mods is great and a must, something I have absolutely nothing against. But gathering resources and crafting your own weapons/armor from scratch is something I oppose adamantly.

I don't know, arguably crafting has been in all the ME games to some extent, what with the weapon and armour modding. Its not necessarily a big departure.

I am a bit weary with crafting in games. I just want the ability to customize and upgrade. I don't necessarily need a crafting system for those features.

No Bloody Crafting in a sci-fi setting. Do not use the word CRAFT or its derivatives. Bypass Go and drive directly to Jail.

I want to be stranded on a planet with an aggressive alien, with my only means of defence a rudimentary cannon crafted from local moss and lichens.

I would like customizing weapons and armor, but not the way you explained it. I would rather like to go to an armor, or weapons dealer, customize the weapon or armor there and have the dealer build it for you with all the mods you asked for.

Upgrades - Yes

Finding new kinds of weapons from Andromeda's alien races - Yes

Crafting - What?

The friggin gorn was sooo slow Kirk could have taken all day and night to make his canon  (That canon was debunked on myth busters however)

Mythbusters Shmythbusters. I could build a moss-and-lichens-based cannon in my sleep! (Or alternately: mass effect fields did it)

Because we'll be a few million light years away from the nearest mall?

Because we'll be in an entirely different space and the only populated worlds are populated with aliens with whom we have no trading agreements, and nothing of value to them to give them in trade?

Because ideally we want our technology to surpass theirs instead of being functionally the same?

This actually brings up an idea I'd had about a crafting system I wouldn't mind seeing in MEA.

I'd hoped the expedition would have researchers (like Mordin) on board along with fabricators. When we find new minerals, plants, animals, etc., we could bring them to the lab for research, along with any other artifacts or technology we discover. The lab would then create new technologies that could upgrade our gear - and tell us more about the worlds.

We might claim resource deposits similar to claiming mines and logging stands in DAI, and a mining team could be deployed to gather the resources, and our fabricators would manufacture whatever we needed from them.

I'm kind of hoping I don't have to choose between appearance and stats, as so frequently happens in RPGs. The looks I like best usually aren't the items with the best stats overall.

I prefer the system ME's been doing (find item, mod item) over that thing that DAI implemented, that made Bethesda's crafting in Skyrim look downright logical. Don't change it.

Well, we're in a new galaxy, supposedly uncovering relics of a technologically superior species.

If that's the case, I can understand how crafting would come in as you figure out a way to integrate non-parallel technology into your weapons/armor/ship/fishtank/LI.

I personally like crafting, but not resource hunting.  If we can use the materials we uncover during missions and side missions to craft/upgrade/customize our gear, I'll be happy.  If I'm scanning planets again...well, I always did get caught up with my podcasts when playing ME2.

What are you on about, Vorcha? You're not even going to Andarmaka. We're ditching you in the MW.

Gaaargh.. :P

But srsly, some customizing and upgrading, cool. Finding cool loot I can equip to squaddies, great.

Another tedious micromanaging crafting system?

No, thank you.

Why is everyone always assuming the worst? Crafting, especially in gaming, is a huge word. We had crafting in ME3, too. Remember how you were able to put little mods onto your self defense sticks? That's crafting, too. Crafting could literally just mean, collecting material, bringing it to a base with a "crafting module" and producing a weapon or weapon mods. Where in the hell is that immersion breaking, not fun or is in anyway negatively inflicting your gameplay? Do we complain about collecting loot in Diablo 4 tomorrow? People, if it's too hard for you to play a game, get another hobby. We are complaining about features, that are supposed to attract you to a fantasy world, making every step you take fun and providing achievements along the way by collecting stuff and getting things in exchange. If that is a thorn in your eye, you are doing it wrong.
