What if romances not essential to the main plot arc were made DLC

People are going to be inevitably upset with whatever romances are available. In ME 1? People were mad they couldn't romance Tali or Garrus. I am sure there is someone out there that is mad the Kelly romance sucked. Jack pretty much came back from hell, why not Kelly? I thought Kasumi was a really cool character myself.

DLC is just a fact of life in modern game design and these games cost a ton of money to make while inflation has gone up. The game prices have had to stay the same however to get them in peoples hands.

So why not romance? Maybe like Shadowbroker but less main plot arc relevant. Would people rather have had a romance arc DLC than Kasumi included in the base game? Or Zaaed? Or Javik? Javik provided so much information we wanted to know. Overlord was some of the best writing in the entire trilogy. When I saw David in ME 3 I was like YES!

I am not saying no romance at all but just limited. Like Ashley carried through the entire trilogy. Or Kaiden and just make them available for both sexes. What if other characters just said "after this is all done with me and you have to talk but lets keep this professional for now" and just have some flirting dialogue in missions.  Then have a loyalty like mission, some fun and some romance as DLC. Also take something you did with SWTOR and be able to change the appearance of that "canon" romance. That way you could avoid a ton of complaints about appearance of them.

I would love to hear Bioware talk about this and how much time and money is invested in the romance aspect of the game in a game like ME 1 compared to ME 2 or 3 or DA:I. I know they would probably not open their books, but how much is lost from the base game due to this.

Also I can see why this might upset people, but what if this allowed you to get better romances? More fulfilling scenes. People who romanced Jack felt kind of ripped off for example. You can't blame Bioware, because it is IMPOSSIBLE to include them all.  I have read that Tali was almost cut and Patrick Weekes had to lobby for her.  If the ending had been different (might have been possible in destroy but that would make things complicated), what if you went and built that house with Tali or you had christened one  *wink wink* during a "downtime" that they could have where all these romances could be put in as DLC like Citadel? Busted a punk criminal with Garrus like Dr. Heart. Or visited Jack's school. Or gone on a heist with Kasumi. You could even keep a closer knit community with possibly having votes for 2 characters that would be romance DLC. I saw Blizzard do something like this with what motorcycle won between alliance and horde.

With so many romances and it being pretty much an impossible task to make them all try to attach to the main plot I almost feel like they all end up really shallow. A "sex scene" might have been racy and awesome for a teen when ME 1 came out, but now they can find darn near anything they want on the internet. The romance should either be really plot relevant or involve things you just could not add outside of DLC. Or as Bruce Lee would say. quote-you-need-emotional-content-bruce-l

I'm sure this would happen with a good part of the community

Hope I don't get a warning strike for the video content

I am curious to why and I do not mean to insult you. Do you play the Mass Effect games and romance a different person each time, or romance all of them to see it? Did you really dislike ME 1 due to the limited romances?

People get rather vocal when it's perceived that content was cut to make DLC.

I'll admit i do have my favourites that i liek to romance but yes i have tried all of them, and tbh i wasnt at all disappointed that there was a lack of romances in ME1, i just dont want to see that mechanic leave the game because i actually like the idea of building up a relationship with a character and watching it develop into more, so im glad that they have said that the romances are going to be more "steamy" i think is the word they chose to describe it... thats why im against them adding less important characters romances in DLC, plus im not paying extra money just for that, its something that should be in the game from the start as it gives the player diversity of who he/she wants to romance if any at all

So you are just saying you would rather pay for plot related content than romances. Fair enough. DLC is going to be in any game going forward no matter what. Just the way game development is now days. Workers make more, everything cost more but the game is still 60 bucks. CDPR only gets around this due to much cheaper labor (country) and they still almost went broke with Witcher 2 I believe and if Witcher 3 was bad they might have gone belly up.

Collateral damage is irrelevant. If EA could make money with such DLCs they would. The fact that there is no "Liara beach volleyball DLC"/"Tali snowball contest DLC" indicates that amount of potential buyers is much lower, than one could think after looking at endless romance threads.

No, I want my romance to be woven throughout the game. However, I would be willing to pay for DLC with extra companion/romance content like the Citadel DLC.

Just an impossibility now days though. Look at a game like Mass Effect 2 or 3 and what were they like a 30 hour base game? Then you look at Uncharted games and they are like 10...

They are going to HAVE to have DLC to offset that, unless you would settle for a 10 hour game or pay I don't know, something like 80 dollars for the base game?

I think companies get way too much flack for DLC on certain titles. Mass Effect games would be one of them. Now if you want to talk about certain shooters? Yeah I can understand the complaints.

I dont mind them releasing new content as DLCs like new missions and weapons and all that but the romances should already be in the base game or else you would have to wait ages just romance the character you want to

Primus

Cutting romance option 4-7 from the game will save on costs. However, asking to make the remaining romances better means adding more dialogue, improved writing, improved character development, which increases costs. Seems to defeat the purpose of cutting.

Secundus

I have no desire to experience, via cinematics, a romance novel. I'm buying Mass Effect for other reasons.

Tertius

Also, a prolonged romance arc will / may have a negative (imo) game pacing effect.

Quartus

Who knows, if Bio goes this route maybe Dutch's predictions of a 150 hour game may become true.

Quintus

And, of course, expect the hue and cry from diversity zealots and from everybody else whose romance option was cut.

Personally, there are too many as it stands. I say, be about it and start shooting something.

They start DLC before the game releases. That is not because they are evil or anything. That is just how game dev works to save money. Like the last few months are testing, bug fixes and you cannot just have all employees standing around and twiddling their thumbs. They are busy working on DLC before the game comes out. So you often have DLC that ships really quick or that can even ship at release.

The final product should be given more importance than DLC. Already starting work on the DLC is bound to affect the quality of the base game.

And besides, if we agree to cut romances into DLC, who knows what else is going to be cut? I'm not saying that there shouldn't be any DLC, because there will be. But something as integral to the franchise as romances, shouldn't be cut out from the game.

Takes a lot of time and work to get the bugs out of a game like Mass Effect :). Just look at all the different hardware on PC. Players always do things the dev did not think of as well. All that has to be ironed out and fixed as well as possible before release. Multiplayer also needs testing.

Working on DLC does not affect anything. Writers write. They do not do bug testing. So they are writing DLC or shipped over to another IP or working on a sequel. Artists? Same deal. Sometimes they will get time off depending on how long a project was or if it was a really hard deadline to make. Some employees may be on the sales pitch circuit.

I'm not sure if you're for the romances in the games or against them. Or maybe you're neutral. But for some of us, the romances intermixed with the main story is an integral part of the game itself, and being forced to wait for that content would be terrible.

Whether you like the romances or you don't, I'd be really let down if they "limited" the romances in Andromeda, only to say "you can't have this romance with the character you like for seven more months". The romances can already be pretty uneventful and dry enough as it is in the main stories of Mass Effect (especially Mass Effect 2). Cutting from the romances any further would kill them completely. DLC is not the appropriate place to make up for how hollow some of the romances can feel. They need improving, not cutting.

I know it would pretty much destroy the franchise i think if they did that, besides they have already said that they have made the romances more in depth or something along that lines

The problem is removing something like romances from the game to be sold as DLC is like removing exploration and then adding it back in later as DLC.  It is something that not everyone enjoys and others feel it isn't implemented well enough, but if it isn't implemented in the game from the very start it either feels like something is missing or that the DLC itself doesn't flow well with the game and just tacked on similar to the Hammerhead missions of Mass Effect 2.

As much as I would love to see BSN react to having romance content tied to DLC, it would be a bad business move.
