Having been cruelly deceived by another thread here that I thought was asking this very question I decided to ask it anyway!

Imagine one of your companions has a child and maybe a husband/wife on an Ark ship. That would provide them with an interesting point of view, they are not trying to find a colony for some hypothetical human rebuilding society effort, they are literally trying to find a home for their child. They would react harsher to threats against the Ark ships, might be more cautious about approaching new species, etc.

I think it would be a pretty darn cool plot point to have a companion who already has a child, to see how that would effect them (and their child) as the story progresses. It would also help make characters feel complete outside of just existing for the protagonist. I felt Ashley's family made her more real, Garrus' dad was a cool talking point with him, and Liara's mom had a big influence on the first game's story.

What are your all thoughts on this?

What kind of blasphemy is this?  THEY MUST ALL BE RYDER-SEXUAL.

I'd rather not have children in the game at all.

Given that I'm sort of expecting some sort of ark or colonization effort, I would tend to expect some of our shipmates might have family members in tow.

And actually - a single parent could make for an interesting, new type of LI option.

I could see a squaddie that has a kid living back on the Ark.

Better make darn sure you don't get daddy killed while you all are out. Or you'll have to explain to junior why daddy's not coming home...because of you.

Although, we didn't do that with Ashley's family, so maybe not.

While I'm not into romances that lead to having babies in video games, this is something different. Kids just existing, and a party member may be a father/mother when you meet them. Alot of military does have family back home. In this case, I believe the Ark is "back home" so sure.

Just if there's a moment where the kid is disobeying his parent and we can renegade interrupt with a german suplex.

Because that makes so much sense.

As much sense as anything in a speculative sci-fi series. We're all free to draw our own arbitrary lines where immersion breaks.

I wouldn't mind having followers who are together, sort of like Zoe and Wash. Can't think of any memorable parent/child combos at the moment but that's probably best left off the ship, or at least the kid off the ship.

It should at least be on the table. BioWare want to create more realistic characters and relationships? Ideas like this one are good ways to progress towards what they ultimately want to create.

How about that baby from DC1938?

04/01/2010 - Planet DC1938 Explodes After Core Fusion (Cerberus News Network)

“DC1938, a small garden world circling the red supergiant SM2183 Rua,
exploded today in a rare phenomenon called core fusion. The planet's
uranium core collapsed in on itself, igniting a thermonuclear explosion
large enough to rupture the planet into several pieces. The shock wave
and loss of atmosphere has reportedly killed more than five billion
native inhabitants. There is one known survivor: an infant rocketed from
the planet in an FTL escape pod picked up by the human cruiser MSV
Kent. The inhabitants of the planet, previously unknown to the galaxy,
were a spacefaring race who used crystalline matrices for their
computing needs. The infant has been taken to medical facilities in the
local cluster, where he is breathing gases in a ratio similar to the
atmosphere of his home planet: 65% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, and 15%
krypton.”

No - especially if they have that old-and-wise-child thing going on.  It was bad enough in ME3 with the Star Brattttttttttttttttttttttt.  Ugh.

As long as we get to kill them, children will ve a good thing in the game.

The Tempest or the ark?

I would expect the followers and other crew members on the Tempest would be all adults with specific roles to perform.

The ark, however, could possibly include family units with children.

I like it!  A spouse will make it all the more satisfying when Ryder seduces that companion away.  And a child will be icing on the cake when we eventually Virmire mommy or daddy  Bring it on!*

If they have no children on the arc, it's absurd. There should at least be child NPCs.

The Tempest. Any "ark" would basically be a hub area.

Exactly. I don't think people are grasping the difference.

I'm all for anything that adds depth and verisimilitude to the game. This may ****** off some of my friends here, but some of my crew mates having kids and/or spouses back on the Ark feels more true to my real-life experience than half of my crew being gay or bi-sexual. I'm not sure why anyone would be immediately against this concept. It is definitely more believable than the human-alien sex that this game will no doubt include.

There is the risk that the writers screw it up, but that's always a risk. I feel like the DA team has screwed up the aforementioned representation by taking it to Twilight Zone levels of unbelievability. The Mass Effect team, on the other hand, has mostly gotten it right. I agree that having even a single kid aboard Tempest would be too far into Twilight Zone territory. Having a kid on the Ark, though? That makes sense. (Some of our "background crew" on the SR2 had kids and family, and they talked about it amongst themselves. They didn't bring them along on the mission, though. Normandy was a warship, as Tempest will be.)

At some point during this endeavor, nearly everyone is going to have to start having kids. This is a colonization effort. With very few exceptions, nearly everyone would've been chosen, not only for their skills, but for their genetics and breeding potential. Some of you are already preparing to counter with, "Nuh uh, cloning", but cloning isn't a viable answer. The galaxy's cloning tech wasn't that sophisticated, as of yet. The natural way is superior, so the wise decision is to send a breeding population.

Long post made short: Yeah, why not? This would make the NPCs more believable, in my opinion.

What if one of your "romanceable" companions only reveals he/she has a kid after you've pursued a romantic relationship with them?

Yeh I'd like for NPCs to have relationships with eachother, just so I can pull a joker and interrupt them whenever they're about to kiss or something. I want to be wanted by the mood police for being a mass mood killer.

If they are tucked away somewhere where they don't bother me then that's fine.  We have had companions with family before.

Hey, I've got an idea. Why not let Ryder have a child?

So let's say we wake up on our ship after being cryogenically frozen for hundreds of years, only to discover that our spouse has been killed and our baby's been kidnapped by some evil organization. Doesn't that sound great? I bet no one's ever thought of that before!
