I chose to attack Balak instead of disarm the bombs this time - first time I've ever made this choice. Seeing the burnt bodies and 25 renegade points was tough, but it was interesting seeing the other options.

I'm at 100% paragon with maxed charm, so I'm selecting more renegade choices now. I'm at Virmire, so have only the really main plot left to do. I'm taking it as a "I'm getting really sick of this ****" approach so Sherpard's patience is wearing thin :D

I'd always recommend ppl experiment and try the harder choices.  It's really interesting storytelling.

Besides, it may be the renegade choice, but you just stopped a slaver from escaping who would no doubt, with the paragon choice, go on to enslave and murder many more ppl.  It's what every Shepard should do for the sake of humanity tbh.

Precisely. Right from the start of the game I was saying to myself, "this time, that ba$****** is not getting away". I fired a warning shot, and then grazed him, and finally left him for the alliance.

I always kill Balak

"Now who's the real terrorist."

Well not me, Balak. I only kill people who deserve it.

Not mine Earthborn Sole Survivor.
"You think I should've let him blow up your friends? Sacrificed a few now to avoid possible deaths later? Nobody dies on my watch. Yeah, Balak might attack another colony in the future. If he does, I'll be there to nail him to the wall."

Then Shepard: "Well unless he attacks after my ship gets blown up and I'm killed by a mysterious insect race. But after that I'll come back after being brought back to life by a terrorist group somehow to save the rest of humanity later on."
Simon: "That's ridiculous! Like that'll happen..."

During my Renegade run I left him to bleed out (as I thought that was the cruelest option of them all). Though that's also the stupidest because 'lo and behold he comes back in ME3 to threaten you nonetheless. (I thought it was a glitch when he showed up, but no.) I still don't know how he managed to slink away with lethal wounds, let alone how he managed to get off the asteroid without raising suspicion.

But yeah, it is actually a lot smarter to kill him. It sucks that the hostages have to die, but they're small in number compared to the amount of people who could potentially suffer at Balak's hands.

Is there a question? I have always attacked Balak except for one playthrough. I will not negotiate with terrorists and find it ridiculous to believe he and his men will not kill at least three people at some point. I am proven right in ME3 when, if alive, Balak uses those access codes to shut off a dozen life support machines and kill 117 Alliance soldiers, while otherwise those codes are merely used to get food for refugees.

There's renegade renegade where you could attack Balak, shoot him and then straight up execute him. Or pragmatic renegade, you could attack Balak, shoot bullets around him and then give him up to the Alliance as he moan he didn't get the death he deserve. He's still alive in ME3 but he won't go into a kill spree against the Alliance unlike the Balak you let free.

You had a chance to save them. Who's the real terrorist here?

You are

...

But you're dead.

The BEST quote in the entire game

I've never let Balak go, I've never even handed him to the alliance, I've just always outright executed him. People like him are too dangerous to let live, in jail or otherwise.

Funny, Balak shows up always in ME3 unless you directly executed him. Giving him to the Alliance or even letting him bleed to death result in him appearing. Though In those instances his actions will be paradoxically less violent than if you just let him leave. I believe this is just an unintentional bug, where the games does not proper register Balak's death but does register that you didn't let him go.

Love it when people use the pre service history and psychological profile to base choices on. It results in more fleshed out Shepards.
