A wonderful fantasy world where I'm constantly reinventing myself--yeah, that's how I play, self-inserting--in a different context, really. ![]()

A really fantastic fantasy setting, and a great alternative to the generic D&D worlds to fill my RP games. How sad that now this setting is becoming more and more like the human-centric and cliched Forgotten Realms...

Bioware likes to say that Dragon Age is about different stories in Thedas in the Dragon Age. But to me Dragon Age was, is and will be about Flemeth, Morrigan and the Warden. For me the first game will be Dragon Age. Everything else has just begun to feel like a spin off now. Years from now if someone asks me to name one game that I will happily rave about, it'll be DA:O.
But with the passing of the time, it seems I'm already in the minority. Soon perhaps we will see people complaining that DA 4 isn't as deep and meaningful as Inquisition was and combat is superfluous.
The times they are a changin'.

I did shamelessly share a little on an appreciation thread, but I figured it fits here too. Here's my post, copy/pasted:
...
As much as I'm aware that none of these games are without flaws, I enjoy them and it's nice to remember why rather than be bogged down by the negativity that can occur. Hell, spending time around the Andromeda section lowers my Mass Effect high... and that sucks. ![]()

I love this series. Couldn't stop playing once I started. But, these are a few of my favorite things:
Characters. love them. Their writing/stories/personalities/voices/interactions/relationships. So much that I feel protective of them. Perhaps irrationally so. Considering Dragon Age has introduced me to my next/current character obsession (*cough*Anders*cough*) that's a good thing. Sounds bad, maybe, but it's good.
Romances go along with this, of course. ![]()
The fact that I can be a female hero/protagonist and kick butt. ![]()
Magic. What is life without magic? It's not life. Fact. ![]()
Also Spirits and the Fade -- a trippy "dream" realm filled with complicated inhabitants. Unlimited fun. (no, i'm not being sarcastic.)
The lore. That each game is interconnected/overlapping. So much mystery of the past and uncertainty of the future. hmmmmmmm
So much I don't know and I want to know it.
Adventures, or misadventures. No matter what will happen, I'm always diving right in. ![]()

To me dragon age is a series that deals alot with questions. Questions about how we interpret what is "real" and "not real", and gong through how others can utilize these views to interpret or rewrite the world.
Histories rewritten, the fabric of the world remade, the purpose and identity of magic, who does and does not qualify as a person, and if that person should have the same rights as any other, etc. About what "truth" is. About what "right and wrong" is.
They extend these questions into social issues we can draw parallels to irl, or otherwise just make a great story that makes me question how I would view things in that world and this one.
Naturally this means I am really interested in how Thedas deals with magic/fade/spirits, but I am also really interested in how they will change socially now that issues are being brought to light. Some refuse to acknowledge they exist, others try to put the blame on one group, others say things should change and others want things to be more or less the same.
Other than that I really like dragon age because of its characters. Particularly the companions. In these games (especially DA:I), the companions feel like people. People with their own ideals, visions and preferences. This contrasts with games like Skyrim where other NPCs and companions are relegated to being little more than animals of labor that walk and talks like a human.

There are many things, and similar to Dragon Age...
Star Wars original trilogy started with slow paced lightsaber combat, then in prequel turn into super fast lightsaber combat
Original trilogy have decent story that does make sense, prequel add more questions that the original trilogy don't explain and even retcon
Then Darth Maul not dead, helicopter lightsabers....ect
And Kylo Ren cross guard lightsaber and Mary Sue Rey.....
Dragon Age is like that, but it is not a surprise since Bioware does influenced by Star Wars and do making Star Wars games

Huh. But who's the Mary Sue then?

Huh. But who's the Mary Sue then?
The Inquisitor is a Mary Sue...the one who have shady background that don't support or explain his/her excellent abilities and skills, hailed as a messiah, become a leader of ancient organization, the one and only person who can defeat the main villain with no reason why...just like Rey

A vast ongoing fantasy world with it's own run on universe about your hero/heroine doing good or evil deeds. Apparently some aspects of that hero/heroine passes on biting that person in the future to future characters. For an example was Logain killed for his treasoness acts or was he spared to redeem himself to either die a honorable death or to lead on for continued redemption? Was my hero/heroine dubbed king/queen of his/her people or did he/she continue fighting the good fight as a grey warden? How big is the hate of elves and qunari from the deaths or survivors? Is the world becoming pro mage or pro templar?
The more games come out, the more it's own history gets built by you and your characters decisions.

DOA hold on my mind for weeks. This fantastic world and story attracted my attention in seconds. What is more, characters are able to develop. It’s an awesome game that I’ll keep in memory till my last breath.

Doesn't sound silly at all really... compared to this world ,Thedas is a step up. The same BS, but hey, magic, dragons, nugs, and Lelianas all over... I mean, the wonderful foundation of a great religion. Yes. That's it.

DA:O was to me about playing a huge variety of characters of different races and backgrounds that I could roleplay in very different ways and about discovering this new and interesting world, experiencing different cultures, etc...It was a game that pulled at my heartstrings many times but also had me laughing or triumphant or smug at others. The rest of the series is about taking away the things I loved one by one and replacing them with things I don't care about.
