So a change from your pre-spec build where you had mage pick up both Dispel + Barrier/upgrades + Guardian Spirit.

Not really. The post in this thread is about minimum spends in the Spirit tree. The prespec build is not minimal for Spirit. So a change from your pre-spec build where you had mage pick up both Dispel + Barrier/upgrades + Guardian Spirit.
Say you really want a Lightning/Fire mage and want to maximize the points you spend in those trees. The question then is, can you get away with spending 0 in Spirit? I'm saying, no.

On necromancer spec do not take the right side of the spirit tree beyond barrier. Guardian Spirit passive does not work with simulacrum passive. You will "die" and go into simulacrum mode as a necromancer before guardian spirit is triggered making the use of that passive useless.
The amulet Kitty's Collar however although has its uses as you have a 75% chance to auto revive with it on but only once every minute and it has a hefty -100% damage resistance penalty. It is an interesting item however on a ai (not main) suicide mage or any other ai class with berserk masterworks etc. however but I would only recommend it if there is a support mage with revival in the party.

It might depend on the spec you pick. Knight Enchanter has a heal/type revive spell so a mage with that spec could stop with Dispel and possibly its upgrade. If you're not bringing along a support mage, you might want to fill the entire left side of spirit.
A destruct mage with a support mage along could stop with Barrier and its upgrades, maybe Guardian Spirit. I've been making sure the other mages all get at least Dispel, well except for Vivienne who I can't stand and will just let her hide in the Chantry.

Does the barrier damage bonus I might add to my staff help Dispel destroy enemy barriers?
Every now and then I meet a promoted mage with an indestructible barrier. I just run away and usually when I return there is a different set of promoted enemies that might be easier to deal with. This doesn't happen so often that it bothers me, but it would be nice to win these fights.

Agreed. These minimums can be relaxed if considered party-wide, rather than for an individual mage.It might depend on the spec you pick. Knight Enchanter has a heal/type revive spell so a mage with that spec could stop with Dispel and possibly its upgrade. If you're not bringing along a support mage, you might want to fill the entire left side of spirit.

BTW, quick save/quick load does the same thing. It resets random mobs and rerolls traits. Quicker than running away and waiting.
Barrier damage buffs certainly help, but, they are less efficient than one character with Dispel. For one thing, the buffs take up slots that could be used more generally, like for Attack or Crit. Not everything has infinite barrier regen. For another, it's hard to get significant buffage. Even if you get it up to 200%, which ain't easy, if you put that on an archer with base damage of 120, or 200 with crit, max damage you are doing per hit is only 600. Against an enemy with 45,000 point barrier with infinite regen, that will take a long time.

Dispel doesn't always completely clear a promoted mage's barrier though. Getting past that last little bit drives me crazy.

True, but taking it down 50% or more in one shot has got to be better than wearing it down a little at a time.Dispel doesn't always completely clear a promoted mage's barrier though. Getting past that last little bit drives me crazy.
