But as far as the stuff on the armor goes, G2 could just be the type or brand of environment suit.
Or, as I already guessed, Ryder could be a member of the second fireteam of Golf squad.
Which makes absolutely no sense, but maybe Golf Squad gets wiped out, or Ryder gets promoted, or whatever, and they get to keep their combat hardsuit.
2LT. Not only will the player be completely clueless, Ryder will be too.

Well, in that sense, Ryder could EASILY be a Second Lieutenant.
If you know some army humor, you'll know why.

The protagonists are all rookies.
Maybe the protagonist with be a redshirt Ensign, and the campaign will not last longer than the first plot world.
