I cannot get the item in this quest because I am unable to carry the veilfire across the violet fire, and most of the time the hold position command is ignored. Am I the only one having this problem

Is it the veilfire you are having problems with or the violet fire itself?    If the latter, then you need to activate your mark to give you temporary immunity.   

 

Getting people to hold is a problem I have had throughout the game.   You have to keep restating it if you swap from controlling one person to another or the one you have just left will start moving.   You could also try swapping to tactical view and then making sure each person is instructed to stay put while you move the one you need to.

Companions you aren't controlling won't try to cross the violet fire even without the hold command. But, as Gervaise, says, use the mark (the new ability that replaces the mount icon) and it will make you immune to damage long enough to run past.

It's also possible to simply cross it without dying if you are tough enough. If you cast barrier right before crossing, that should be enough. Quick movement skills like Fade Step and Combat Roll are useful too. I didn't know you were supposed to use the new ability at first, so that's what I did.
