When it comes to uniformity vs. individuality, I'm somewhere in the middle with a slight lean toward individuality. I like for every companion to have their own personalized style, but I also like the whole group to follow a similar color scheme.

CO: Ashley, report to the armory.

Ashley: Huh? Why?

CO: To be fitted for your new breast sculpture armor. Don't argue, just go.

Ashley: Aye, aye, skipper.

(at the armory)

Armorer: Oh, good, you're here. Please remove all of your clothing from the waist up.

Ashley: Wut? Why?

Armorer: So we can take a body cast of your breasts. Your new armor must be custom made for an exact fit.

Ashley: But my breasts aren't exactly the same every day of the month, if you catch my drift.

Armorer: Doesn't matter. It will just be... more comfortable some days than others. Strip.

Ashley: Why are we doing this? I'm perfectly happy with a good, supportive sports bra and some room for the girls to move around in the old armor styles.

Armorer: Because someone higher up on the food chain decided it would be a good thing to display the exact shape of your unique breasts in an armor sculpture to be worn on your chest. Otherwise, noone would know what your breasts look like.

Ashley: But how am I supposed to aim and fire a rifle with that on my chest?

Armorer: Doesn't matter. Your Marksman skill won't work, anyway. Be the good soldier you've always been, and strip for us, please.

(later)

Armorer: Here is your new custom chestpiece with id markings, since it won't properly fit anyone else.

Ashley: Uh, okay, I guess. How am I supposed to put it on?

Armorer: It's a process. You start by spraying this lubricant on your breasts to make it easier for them to slide into place. Then you go through a series of shaking your upper body and circling the arms until every bit of your breast tissue is exactly where it needs to be relative to the rigid material of the chestpiece. Once the tissue is all in place, we turn on some internal processors designed to keep everything where it's supposed to be, so you can move around with no slippage.

Ashley: How long is this gonna take?

Armorer: We've found that, with practice, most users are able to successfully armor up in less than an hour. Many of our users have developed the habit of leaving their armor on at all times, so they are ready for action.

Ashley: Let's get on it with, then.

For some weird reason I got an urge to become an armorer.

Well, the color scheme would really help with the issue of being able to pick out your teammates in the heat of battle.

What would be ideal is if the armor color scheme had high contrast relative to the environmental palette. I guess that would interfere with any semblance of camouflage, but it sure would make it easier to visually identify teammates in the field.

But won't the environmental palette be awfully variable?

I would *love* to be able to put my team in uniform gear again, as I could in ME1.

Didn't you have to pay a really high price for that? With enough armor drops you can find identical looks for people, but a lot of the gear will have lousy stats.

I'm a fan of practical things that work, I find revealing armor practically and aesthetically highly idiotic and inappropriate.   Samara's armor for example made me cringe so hard.....

This kind of armor is exactly what I want to see in ME:A

Maybe. It depends.

Lighting (including shifting the color of the light) can also make a big difference in how something looks. Characters look different under different lighting conditions, too.

Minor shifts in armor color from one environment to the next - in order to maintain some degree of contrast with the environment - might not be noticed by most players, since we see colors change from scene to scene, anyway.

Appearance versus stats is a pretty traditional trade-off in RPGs. Sometimes I wish it weren't so, but it is what it is.

And if you do new game + with the same character, you can build a pretty good stash of armors.

Thank god the armor does not look feminine. The job of armor is to protect you, not to highlight your gender specific features. Armor does not make men look manly nor women feminine, it makes humans look like they're protected from the elements and fast moving shrapnel plus projectiles that would otherwise turn your insides out.

Personally, I want my character to look protected with armor that makes sense from logical point of view, instead of having armor that makes my character more manly or feminine. As a nice side effect I think that kind of armor also looks the coolest, so for me its a win/win situation.  ;)

Would you believe me if I told you I imagined that whole scenario the first time I saw that armor in the game? It's like... you've got to be kidding me.

I have similar feelings about the wedgies and kamel-toe. I've trained myself to ignore a lot of this stuff, otherwise I feel some sense of empathetic discomfort.

How the hell Miranda put on her jumpsuit is something I consciously chose not to think about. I'm guessing whoever designed it made a similar choice.

This is just a game, not everyone have the same opinion as you,

and even if using your logic, protection armor don't mean that it must looks manly, it maybe just your preference.

Colossus armor?

Colossus armor was hard to get and for Tali nearly impossible to get a level 10 one. You could get one (or a Savant omnitool) as a reward in BDtS.

I went for the Predator armor (the more expensive variant) for the rest. That one was not available for Tali. The omnitool could be found as loot at a specific location on that asteroid (if you were lucky). Save and try to see if you got the correct one. Reload if not. Repeat until I got dizzy. :P

In the end I just used console commands. Grinding for it like that wasn't worth it. Money enough, so it didn't feel like cheating.

Wait... you're talking about the armor changing appearance between locations without player input?

Depends on the level. My last run I got a Phoenix IX or some such for her instead. Still the best thing I ever saw for her in that game.

You know how there are boob sockets? I always thought it looked like Miranda's default outfit has butt sockets like one for each cheek.

Bummer. The Savant X was supposed to be the best.

Edit: Oops. You mean armor? It was always Colossus. At least in my runs. The omnitool was either Polaris or Savant, though.

You crazy man. This armor is the best! Seriously though, you can see some of Shep's figure coming through this armor. It just doesn't have the boob plate, which honestly makes it look cooler to me. Only thing missing are the Hahne-Kedar gauntlets.

Lighting really makes a difference.

In DAI I discovered that the light source in the armor preview was blue-ish, instead of white. Luckily I was a patch beta tester at the time and was able to convince a dev to change it to a neutral color. That made coloring a lot easier.

We'll agree to disagree. I have a military background, and tend to place higher value on uniformity over individuality. I like my team to look like a team when we're in the field - though I'd happily accept having some team members making minor mods to their gear.

Plus - there are practical issues, like recognizing members of my own team on the battlefield. I'd much rather see the zots spent on more options overall than individual appearances.

(And I'm a little annoyed that everything my qunari wears ends up looking like some sort of metal leaf tunic with very minor differences. It's that or the Shokra-taar. I'd rather the zots spent on all of those individual looks for followers had been spent... elsewhere)

That's unfortunately the whole crux of this debate.

There are three main groups of people who want something specific here(fanservice, moderately realistic, and highly realistic) and historically we only get enough outfits for squadmates to really satisfy one of those. Maybe two at best. It's not so much that I don't want others getting the armour type they like as much as I want to ensure the kind I like gets into the limited number of armours we're going to get.

Although I think they could solve the recognizing squadmates thing by ensuring that the colour schemes don't align with what the enemy wears, regardless of which style they go with.

In 2014 BW dreamed up something similar:

Charting a Course: Developing the Next Mass Effect.

It starts at about 1:20.

It is similar to what we see in the last BtS video.
