Or they can make any character they want and sexualise and objectify as mush as they want. If you don't like isabela pirate **** or Cullen fanservice knight it's your problem. Cullen is in game because a lot of horny girls want it don't like you problem not writer they wanted to make eye candy for girls fine, same think isabela,

I will continue to voice my opinion on issues that I find relevant to the game whether you like it or not. Of course, I'm going to put pressure on Bioware to create mature progressive content. I vote with my voice and my wallet. Thankfully, BW seems to get it and looks to be putting effort into producing feminist friendly content.

I agree on everything except putting pressure. You feminist pushing to much pressure on developers if you don't get you way, even on games witch you don't like or hate. Well but if Biovare want to cater to you fine, like you say vote with you wallet.

Can't say I agree with not putting pressure on the devs. The other 'side' is guilty of pressuring for the status quo. Everyone has the option to advocate for their preferences. Nothing wrong with that and it's really the best way to let the devs know exactly what you want with games. Nowhere in history have marginalized people gotten better representation, rights, what have you by remaining silent.

Not at all. The complaints about her being sexualized were nonsense, as proved by the fact that the complainers "won" by getting a more overtly "sexy" pose as replacement for the one they couldn't tolerate. And the tone and aesthetic of Overwatch is more akin to The Incredibles than Mass Effect, so sexualization is very debatable, even in the case of Widowmaker.

I thought you were mocking me and calling me a hypocrite. I got the wrong message. Anyway Whatever man. But yeah tracer is pretty sexualized. Little kids game and they give her a nice *** l, why? Well I suppose to appeal to adult gamers obviously. It makes sense.

If in MEA,  combat characters did wear combat attire, do we need backstory to define an Allers type character as comfortable in her sexuality?  imo it's not necessary. I think for bit players, we don't really need context.  In real life, we don't assume anything when we see a random woman wearing a sexy dress walking down the street.

In any case, the Behind the Scenes video shows that Bio decided to go with body fitting light combat armour that clearly outlines the breasts.

Any further pro/con discussion about this is moot, imo.

Well this thread took an unexpected turn. I expected the usual empowering versus sexualised debate, others advocating a middle ground between aesthetic and form, then of course those caring only for practical armour. However I did not expect someone to start talking about fictional characters consenting to being fanservice...

...I honestly don't know how to respond to that.

Staying in the trenches and waiting for this  whole thing to blow over is the best and only sane response to this.

Yeah, that's not the point being made at all but nice mischaracterization of what is actually being said.  The point being made is that fictional characters don't actually have any agency and cannot actually be empowered or give consent. All the choices being for the character are being made by the creators. In order to write a sexually empowered character, the writers have to show that the character has agency in the fictional universe. They have to be careful not to write a fan service character under the guise of 'empowerment'.

That makes all the comments and threads that is less intelligent more amusing. :D

That's not really a "sexy" scene. It's more of an embarrassing one for Cullen. Sure it kinda shows off his abs, but it's not exactly meant to be alluring and it's not exactly the same as his being naked from the waist up. The IB is actually a bit better of an example, but the difference there is that he doesn't exactly have a look that's all that sexual. By which I mean the type of muscles etc. he has are not typically associated in our culture with "hot".

I think the problem in these threads is there's just a lot of closeted sexual issues personally..... that just kinda surface because I think pretty much everyone agrees it should be "cool" and "sexy" for the most part... and don't even disagree on what that is oftentimes.

You keep talking about a fictional character's inability to consent to their purpose in the plot and I'm going to keep pointing out how weird that is every single time. They are whatever the creators want and quite frankly there is nothing inherently wrong with being made with fanservice in mind.

Furthermore it's extremely difficult to argue that any character in Mass Effect, regardless of the level of fanservice provided, doesn't have agency in the story or real characterisation. So, once again, I have to say I'm bewildered as to the point being made.

I don't understand why so many people can't stand sexy looking men and women, as well as clothes. Does everyone have to be average or below average looking to get your approval?

Being ugly and hiding your body doesn't make a deeper and interesting character.

You seem to be really confused about what I'm saying. The point I'm repeatedly making is the exact point you just made. Characters can't actually make choices as the writers make all the choices for them. If you read this thread several people made the argument that the character's choose sexualized outfits as "maybe that's what the character wants to wear". This ignores the fact that characters don't actually want anything. It's all down to what the writers depict. Perhaps you should go find those people and whine to them about the ridiculous point they made and stop attributing it to me.

I was asked how writers could distinguish between a sexualized character and an empowered character and gave some thoughts on that subject. One of the points I made that might be confusing you, I don't know, is that if the writers want to depict an empowered character they have to actually write the character as empowered. Slapping a sexy outfit on a woman, especially in a professional setting, and labeling it as 'empowering' doesn't actually make it empowering. This gets to the idea of actual characterization that is empowering and not just silly fan service. You've taken my thoughts on this and twisted it into I think that characters have agency or can give consent. What I've actually said is that characters should be written with agency.

With all that said, I do object to writers choosing to create fans service sexualized characters and I'll continue to talk about the problems with it.

Unless I'm missing something, everyone wants reasonably dressed people who avoid non-sensical clothes (Miranda's wedgiewear), but still look cool.

Personally, I'd like a bit of variety in casualwear -- characters should have different tastes -- but to put everyone in decent armor for a firefight. The latter looks promising.
