Mass Effect could really use some more racial diversity

I mean just think about it for a second. The Systems Alliance is made up of people from all over Earth, yet most of the humans we ever met were caucasian. Even though, both China and India were supposed to be major superpowers by 2183 and beyond. Yet, we barely ever saw any South Asian or East Asian characters. Not to mention the fact that both of these countries probably still outnumber North America and Europe by a great deal. Yes, we got a good deal of diversity from aliens (despite a lack of female aliens), yet I couldn't help but feel as if the human cast was sorely in need of more diversity.

I have no doubt that Bioware will try to do a better job this time around, as they have consistently improved their ability to create a diverse cast of characters with every new game they make. I really hope they push the envelope further with MEA. I just feel that the setting of Mass Effect demands it far more than that of most games.

It's a legit topic. ME was never very good with racial and national diversity, and got worse as the series went on. (Star Trek TOS had a similar decline.)

I wanna play as either a Drell assassin or a Krogan Battlemaster, that's all I want.

Yeah, but I can't remember what the rules are for this stuff. Back in the day there were only supposed to be three major races -Caucasian , mongoloid, and negroid.

The first examples I can remember are:

David Anderson

Donnel Udina

Gianna Parasinni

Maeko Matsuo

Arcelia Silva Martinez

Edit: Khalisa Al-Jilani

Edit: Bhatia

Edit: Kahoku

Edit: Emily Wong (how could I forget her???)

Edit: Ethan Jeong

Fai Dan

Hana Murakami

Charles Saracino

Jacob Taylor

Kasumi Goto

Cortez

Samantha Traynor

James Vega

Kai Leng

Rodriguez

Dominic Osoba

Maya Brooks

There are more (even more if you include eastern europe ones as Dr. Michel, Oleg Petrovsky, Zaeed Massani, etc.EDIT: plus Kaidan Alenko, Ashley Williams)

I don't know. Mass Effect it's pretty diverse from the beginning. :)

If I remember correctly, Kaidan is part Eastern European, part Asian and Ashley is at least partially Hispanic. I would expect mixed race people to be a lot more common in the future.

I'd agree.  I'd say that so far, Bioware has done a pretty good job with this in the Mass Effect series.

I believe the technical definition of "caucasian is "white-skinned, of European origin"... so I'm not sure where that leaves Samantha Traynor either, since she was born in London, but is obviously not white-skinned.  There are several darker-skinned individuals with European names:  Anderson, Cole, Taylor.

OP:  There are obviously lots of individuals in the ME series who are not entirely white-skinned and many who do not have names of European origins.  Al-Jilani, Bhatia, Matsuo, Osoba, Kohoku, Parasinni, Wong, Jeong... to name a few.  I think you're focusing too much on a straight male Shep's human LIs, which were all Caucasian women.  In that respect, I agree that the racial balance could have been more even.

Actually, under the technical definition Arabs and Indians are also Caucasian and they're neither white nor of European origin. But yes, people usually use it to mean of European descent. /pedantic

The whole classification system is rather outdated, anyway.

There's Samesh Bhatia who is South Asian and also his wife who served with Ashley, There's Emily Wong. There's Matsuo Maeko, Goto Kasumi (proper naming). There's also Khalisah Bint Sinan Al-Jalani, who have an obvious Arabic name. Ashley look like the Kardashians to me.. they're Armenians right? There's a couple East Europeans and names; Mikhailovich, Petrovsky, Alenko, Even Kaidan look Latino in the first two game.. which made sense considering his face model.

Most of in-game characters doesn't show their nationality but the game is fixed and environment tend to be recycled and the characters' appearance tend to be random and generic so you can't be so certain.

Ah, but that's yet another discussion. Most Turkish people and many Hispanics, for example, look white, yet they're rarely thought of as such.
