Wild silly guess that I've been thinking about, arks leave unknown to the Reapers while they focused on home worlds and stuff, kinda like the crucible was kept quiet, everyone stares at their galaxy(starboard observation), and then we wake up, the game begins as the player sees the population wake up, soaking in that depressing atmosphere of doubt and uncertainty. You find your family and your superiors to find how to start/tutorial/warm up exercises.
Another idea, the ark you wake up in is malfunctioning and must find your way off to another ark with survivors/no survivors.

A stupid looking space-ninja walks up and says "I'm sure glad Commander Shepard didn't actually manage to kill me. Now I will ruin the Ark project on behalf of Cerberus, which still exists somehow! Mwahahahahaa!"
And then everyone looks at the game in disgust, then logs on to BSN to complain...

The game begins, you make your character, then out of the mist...

You know, people would complain about it, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a group of human loyalists made up of ex-Cerberus and Terra Firma folks in Andromeda.

Since it looks like we're going "stasis" - which I hate, but whatever - I'd like the beginning of Mass Effect to be an "Origins" tale couched in the format of dreams during stasis.
Scene 1 (Based off a concept you picked in character creation): A scene from your youth. Perhaps a non-descript environment to avoid railroading. Introduce some basic mass effect principles.
Scene 2 (Based off class chosen): Late teen/early twenty something (since people tend to remain children - at least in America - till their mid-Twenties nowadays perhaps even older as the life expectancy in ME is around 150). Training based off class. More non-descript environments. Discuss more about "what was" in Mass Effect. Councils, aliens, Contact Wars, etc. Touch on these things briefly.
Scene 3 (Based off concept chosen in character creation): News of the Reapers (I refuse to believe this story is based before the Reapers). Discuss Shepard in passing. More info about the ME universe. You are selected for the Andromeda Initiative based off your character creation choices (not unlike why Shepard was picked only with less training - more of a personality profile or talent).
Scene 4: (Based off a personality trait picked at character creation) Boarding of the ARK... a final goodbye to ME 1, 2 and 3 and the themes of those games. Perhaps news of the Reapers coming. Perhaps news of the Batarians homeworld being obliterated. Whatever they feel is appropriate. Meeting some, if not all, of the cast of characters you'll be exploring the game with as future Pathfinders (Yes, I would like the team to have been pre-assembled and stop wasting RP time finding these inevitables... this isn't a "do what you want" scenario... you don't get to choose who to take. These people would have been assigned. The game can provide opportunities for getting rid of hated Companions throughout the game.
Scene 5: A brief exploration of mission objectives "if" we make it. Talk with Pathfinder compatriots about expectations and hopes and fears "if' we make it. Explore your own character's hopes, fears and expectations about making it to Andromeda (these decisions would direct the path this playthrough takes on some level if I were making ME 4). Then... cryostasis.
Main Game: "We made it."
Well... I did just develop a way I wouldn't hate stasis.. but I have no belief that the beginning is going to be anything like this.

Nothing to do with Shepard.
Maybe some early life choice scenes where you play out your Ryder and possibly family event leading up to getting contacted by the Aliance or council representatives administration and summons....
Making some choices that creates your characters basic characteristics and reputation...

I'd find it funny if we were given the option to play a masked character during the first mission or so and the entire time we assume he/she is the character we're going to customise only for that character to die at the end of the mission....just before they leave for Andromeda. Then you go to create your actual character who then wakes up in Andromeda and is told they're now in charge since the last guy died.
'Yo boss welcome to Andromeda. The captain kicked the bucket so like you're in charge now lol'
Option 1 - Wait, why me?
Option 2 - This has got to be a joke, right?
Option 3 - WTF?!

First I wake up from the cryo, get dressed, then I get briefed by the ship's AI/VI while I get a cup of coffee.
Then I will dramatically sigh and proceed to save everything. ![]()

Prob won't happen because one of the Ryder family is n7 and the colony was anti alliance, but I can wish.

I want it to start out with Ryder and family on Horizon. Then the collectors attack(during me2 obv.). Afterwards surviving family members sign up for andromeda initiative.

I'd rather see Ryder and family scrambling to safety during Sovereign's attack on the Citadel.

At the beginning, the camera looks out at the city of Vancouver. The sound of a door is heard opening followed by a familiar voice being heard. At that point, the character creator pops to adjust the looks of Shepard. Just like Hawke in DAI. Anderson introduces the Chief Director for the building of the ships that will make the trip to Andromeda. Only a vague explanation is given to Shepard about the project. The director wants Shepard to give a message to the folks making the journey. He gives Shepard a datapad to read. A few moments later, and after Anderson and the director have left, Shepard walks towards the window and looks towards the sky.
The scene switches to showing shuttles leaving Earth heading to the ships. People are seen doing all kinds of task to prepare the ships for the journey. A couple of characters are seen talking. One of them mentions Ryder's name. At that point, another character creator pops up to create the looks of Ryder. After that, Ryder is seen with family members then told to head to her/his stasis pod for the trip. After giving hugs to family members, Ryder is seen getting in his/her pod.
Since the song Ghost Riders in the Sky will be in the game, what about a song for the ships leaving the Milky Way?
Since humanity will lead the other ships to Andromeda, the pilot of the human led ship will get on the CB and say Breaker one-nine. We got ourselves a CONVOY. Key in the song. excellent.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
In all seriousness though, nothing like DAI. I've got to believe new players to the franchise were hella confused.

Here's how I imagine it will start.
Opening text. Every ME game has it, it will briefly explain what the Arks are, and give a very small bit of backstory. e.g. "400 years ago, yada yada yada, in a last ditch effort to survive, the species of the Milky Way, yada yada yada, and now they have arrived".
Next will be a panning shot to the Ark, at first, there will be very few lights on, and then, all of a sudden, it will light up. Camera then cuts to Ryder as he/she awakens from cryosleep, along with numerous other survivors. We will get someone on a loudspeaker directing us to the door, which will let the player get the hang of moving their character around.
After getting through the door, a cutscene will trigger, someone of importance with a history with Ryder will pull player aside and give a more detailed accounting of things. For story reasons, them and the command staff of the ark were awoken early and have already done some drone reconnaissance of Andromeda, and they have a mission for Ryder because Ryder has military experience or something. This conversation will allow the player to explore the dialogue tree and flesh out the backstory. After the officer is done with Ryder, they will make their way to the hangar and the first mission will begin.

We make the character, and get started with waking up and going.
Don't waste time with backstory. We're in a place where the origin of the character is millions of light years away.

Ryder wakes up from the stasis pod and realizes the ship is under attack. Kaidan Alenko *cough* no! Carth Onasi meets up and explains how they have to meet Bastilla. Ryder has no memories of the past but Bastilla offers to help...
all this in a galaxy far, far away.

I think it will be like Fallout 4 where you create your character and play like 15-20 minutes before you go on ice. Cinematic starts as the Ark leaves Milky Way, camera pans to your ice pod or whatever when you're ready to 'wake up', then you walk through the Ark as others start to wake up, and once you arrive on the bridge you see a landscape type shot of the star system the Ark is arriving at. Mass Effect Andromeda pans somewhere on the screen, and then your Duncan/Anderson type of character greets and briefs you on what's next.
That is what I am hoping for - I'd love it even more if we get to do a quest or two before we leave the Milkyway (maybe do some final checks on the ship-systems or something...while hearing frantic broadcasts of fighting against the Reapers etc. in the background (showing us how dire the situation is - kind of what the nuclear explosion did in Fallout 4!)...the fleet departs (maybe the escorting fleet has to throw itself in the path of some Reaper units?) the galaxy and as we enter the void we get put into stasis!)...when we wake up I want to be able to explore the ark we're on and maybe check the systems again (it's been centuries, so you've got to run diagnostics to see if anything failed etc.)

Nice - except I still think they won't take children (they don't contribute to the expedition as a whole as they can't offer anything usefull in the way of skills etc. and frankly children lack discipline and are a liability (can't watch them all the time in dangerous environments etc.) - not to mention that children "happen on their own" if you ensure you take enough fertile people along (not to mention say fertilized embryos, to give your restart of civilization a boost once you've got the basics up and running and a good hospital with artificial wombs etc. set up...I mean we've not developed something like that yet, but compared to what the guy in ME have we are primitives anyway!))

Maybe it'll begin with Anderson and Hackett going through various sernereos. Finally agreeing that Shepard is plan A, and he/she doesn't need to know about plan B.
Hm...kind of like the voices in ME1 when you select your background and character-type (ruthless, sole-survivor, hero...)?
Good idea
(though we don't know if Shepard was told...or if that final greeting was just fan-service)
