SMG challenges when you hate SMGs?

I'm not 100% sure how points work, but you don't need fire explosions and you can get a ton of weapon kills.  Use Overload to strip shields and then aim for the head.  Incendiary Ammo helps by making them do the little fire dance, making a steady stream of headshots easy, which is critical for taking stuff down with water gun SMG's.  Yeah, you will lose out on the points you get from stripping the shields with Overload, but if you're getting the kill with the SMG, I think you will still get plenty of SMG points.

 

My written info comes from here. But in-game it's easy to check, just do a bronze solo (maybe even just the first wave) and check if you got more points with a marksman kit or and explosions/power kit. In my experience, the difference between both is very, very notable. Or maybe it's just me that when I have powers available I like to spam them.

Honestly, wait until you have a Hurricane, it'll be less painful that way.

 

And if you must before that, then use the GI. It can make junk weapons half decent.

 

CSMG is good, but is a must to use HVB and extended mag. You are really forced into using those 2 things unless you are going to use AP or drill III (Drill 1 and 2 by themselves don't have good enough armor mitigation IMO)

Not with a crappy low level SMG. He needs a decent weapon, because he struggles VS armor. He will kill mooks with overload and headshots easily, but when the big boys come, he needs DPS. And GI is way better in that regard, because of 20% debuff from PM and raw cloak damage. 

 

The GI is better at damage than everything. That doesn't mean the GE is bad, it means the GI is BS/OP.

Tempest X, CSMG III, GPSMG X, even Hornet X are all plenty good enough on the GE, if they're not good enough on him for you to play Gold with him, YOU'RE not good enough.

The RoF and Accuracy bonus from Hunter Mode makes up for any lack of raw ADDITIVE weapon damage from Passive. Overload stuns, and Turret distractions and flamethrower all provide enough CC that any half decent player can mop up with ease. Tempest in particular is devastating in his hands (Hurricane too, but OP said they don't have it), even against Armour.

Did I say GE is bad? Nope. Is it ideal to get SMG kills for challenges? Nope. You want a more pure weapons kit for that. And GI/TSol is better. 

 

GPSMG sucks, because you have to ramp up after every Overload.

Yes, you will get fewer weapon points if you're not just using your weapon for damage.  But you will still get plenty of weapons points, and the game will be much more fun, at least on Gold and below where bosses can be easily kited/avoided/distracted by PUGs while you mow down mooks for points.

When I make builds I don't presume the PUGS will be alive and I might have to curry or solo bosses on my own.

Suppose it just depends on your approach regarding how Challenges are fulfilled.

 

Is OP more interested in slamming through some assorted SMG achievements or finding them viable/enjoyable homes (aka complement a kit or two)?

Stability help and on any kit with proxy mine. (Incindiary ammo for fire explosions is very sweet too. ie. don't get caught doing Shuriken challenge without it or Disrupter)

On Gold, you can usually count on one other competent PUG, and two competent players is all it takes to clear Gold without too much trouble.  Also, you can usually tell with a decent amount of certainty in the lobby if you're going to have to carry.  Yeah, sometimes the process breaks down and you end up spending waves wishing your GPR would suddenly become a Hurricane.  But if my clear rate on Gold is 95% instead of 100% because I like to use an underpowered weapon once in a while, I don't fret it too much.

The big problem with using ammo mods when specifically working on weapon challenges, is most of the ammo types steal weapon kills, and Incendiary is the worst for that. Heck, even AP ammo manages to (somehow) steal weapon kills.

 

You almost want to use Cryo as it won't steal any kills as it doesn't add any damage

GE is good because of overload not becasue he is an overly great weapons damage dealer.  (As compared to the Tsol)

Once again turians (especially Tsol) make every weapon good, but geth infiltrator makes every weapon great

 

A selection of good builds :

Shuriken : Valkyrie with incendiary rounds, plat solo by my buddy FM here : 

Tempest : Tsol

Locust : Tsol

Geth Plasma SMG : human soldier : with adrenaline rush you can basically shoot all the time and keep the weapon at max dps

Hornet : Tsent (stability + warp + crowd controll = win)

Blood Pack punisher : GI

Collector SMG : Collector Adept (obviously) or any power class (human adept, volus engineeer...) that needs to apply incendiary ammo

That's more of a matter of personal taste and approach, and because of that up to the OP.

 

I obtain a lot of satisfaction from completing challenges quickly when I decide to do so. It eliminates the feeling of grinding you can sometimes get. Also, marksman improves the enjoyability of many guns in my opinion, like the Revenant, Locust, BPP, CAR... they all sound better with the greatly increased RoF to my ears. And remember that a 50% RoF increase equals a 50% DPS increase provided you connect all shots, which is not that difficult thanks to the improved accuracy. That's without taking into account the extra headshot damage. Making a shitty gun actually good is fun too (or it is for me anyway).

 

I also prefer to use semiautomatic guns on the GE, I think they synergize better with overload spamming, tech explosions, and reload cancel/hiding (the only exception I can think of now being the GPR). I usually leave autos to marksman and semiautos to geth kits.

 

So, if the goal is to complete challenges, I still suggest Marksman kits and GI. If the goal is to incorporate them into normal gameplay, that's another thing altogether  :) .

My input re: the GE and all its glory: great character that requires more skill than I possess, unfortunately. :) I don't think he's necessarily better or worse than the GI, but for me the GI is more intuitive and lets me kill things faster without accidentally becoming a support character

Well, if there turn out to be kits that could make SMGs genuinely fun for me, then I'd tend more toward the latter because that makes challenge completion more fun and less of a chore. But until I find one that's a good enough fit, it's more of the former. :P Luckily, you guys have given me some pretty decent options.

 

Also, I probably should've clarified in the first post that I'd rather not just use TSol constantly; I did that for AR Mastery and it got pretty dull. I don't think I've even used him since then.

Liberal Use of Stabilty mods and alot of FQE waves make SMG's easy for me

 

all else aside they are good for ammo priming

I tried the QFE just now and it... ahh... didn't go so well. I'd never used her above silver before and am also just not used to tech powers at this point, after using a bunch of weapons platforms and then biotics that don't really have to aim their powers. :')

Don't listen to the stupid humans who use the piece of **** Claymore. CSMG, Hurricane, Lancer, Mattock, Talon. That's what you want.

I used to be good with the cryo explosion formula and everything, but now I'm doing things like hitting cover, missing Nemeses, forgetting to throw my turret, hitting the wrong keys... :( I was left having to clutch and just nuked everything because I'm so bad at killing things with this character.

I really like the GE, but I would never use the indra on it (again). The gun is horrible, suffers too many design flaws that make it impractical. So many other guns do it better.

Nova guard should work well with tempest and locust with fire ammo, gives your character much needed extra umf vs armour with fire explosions it wont will the challenge bar fast though.
