I'm not 100% sure how points work, but you don't need fire explosions and you can get a ton of weapon kills. Use Overload to strip shields and then aim for the head. Incendiary Ammo helps by making them do the little fire dance, making a steady stream of headshots easy, which is critical for taking stuff down with water gun SMG's. Yeah, you will lose out on the points you get from stripping the shields with Overload, but if you're getting the kill with the SMG, I think you will still get plenty of SMG points.

But in-game it's easy to check, just do a bronze solo (maybe even just the first wave) and check if you got more points with a marksman kit or and explosions/power kit. In my experience, the difference between both is very, very notable. Or maybe it's just me that when I have powers available I like to spam them.
