Not sure if this topic has legs but I did start wondering if we would be able to identify any of the storylines in Andromeda from other parts of the Sci Fi universe...

I think we can all see the echoes of Sci Fi films and books in the ME trilogy... so I wonder if you've done any speculation about what exploration/evacuation/exodus story's that may have been plundered/referenced in Andromeda

After all 'good writers borrow but great writers steal'

It's a good question. Problem is, it's so open-ended.

Depends on how they want to pitch it. Do they steal from battlestar galactica? That's a well known story about refugees.ME did its best when it stole from B5 - a lot of the most memorable parts of the setting are really story beats from that B5.

Well your topic has a better chance of "growing legs" if you actually took the time to offer your own thoughts on the very question you ask....If you can't even be bothered, why should anyone else?

I just don't get people that start threads like this but can't even be bothered, or are too lazy, to offer their own thoughts on the very thing they bring up....

ME1 - 60s-70s - Idealistic travels. Classic.

ME2 - 70s-80s - Badass fights. Killing roboids.

ME3 - 80s-90s - Dark warfare. Strange plots (okay, theorizing-me is getting into this, but more clearly just consider Leviathan and Geth Consensus).

MEA - Halo. *cough* I mean 90s-00s. - 'Modern.'

Its a 'new age' for Mass Effect and the gist so far, including even writer hirings, seem to fit that concept to me.

I think Andromeda will be very much about a higher level conflict of cosmic armies, or at least the starting up of it. I think we'll be consistently propelled into a more active movement (including travel, socializing, combat) through the world and it will unveil more alien politics than ever.

A mix of low and high sci fi again. This time the low being the Battlestar Galactica 'ragtag' fleet nature. And the high being the opening to more advanced and intriguing technology in Andromeda. With the 'Tempest', we may find things that make all our dreams come true, though we have a smaller and more isolated galactic force in the meantime.

If we go by Sci-Fi shows, then;

ME1: Babylon 5, The Next Generation.

ME2: Deep Space Nine, Battlestar Galactica (Reimagined).

ME3: Voyager, Enterprise (Season 1-3), Battlestar Galactica (Season 4)

So why don't you try speculatin' about the ripped-off storyline that will be used for the new story that hasn't been revealed yet.

What? Mass Effect is 100% original in every possible way. It didn't rip off anything.

I'd love a quest based on Sharknado.

I wouldn't mind seeing an alien race that takes inspiration from Dragon's Egg.

In the novel, there is an intelligent alien species that exist on the surface of a neutron star, that evolve so quickly that they go from a primitive society that worships an approaching human spacecraft as a deity, to being more technologically advanced than humans, all within the space of a month.

How about The 100? There are certain similarities in the situations, although Ryder didn't look quite that young.

I had that thought as well.

Another one I'd like to see get at least a "nod" is movie The Martian (2015).  That movie used the Mars Pathfinder - so I guess that's what made me think of it.  Then, of course, there's the movie Interstellar (2014).

Well if there are any microorganisms that dry up blood in the body that would come from The Andromeda Strain. I wonder how immune systems and diseases will be handled in MEA.

ME in general have a strong vibe of SG for some reason. With no portal but Mass effect relays that limited how much you can explore.

My guess ME A will have some influences with SG A.

Is more today i was re watching a old episeo of SG1, where they use the portal to propagate a energy weapon trow all the galaxy to kill the Replicators (robots aliens).

After watching it, i was like OMG that is the ending of ME 3

Most of the 100 look like 20somethings trying to pass for teenagers so...

As for inspiration, how about Star Trek, TOS or TNG

"Space:  the final frontier.  These are the voyages of the star ship Enterprise.  It's five year/continuing mission:  to explore strange new worlds.  To seek out new life and new civilizations.  To boldly go where no man/no one has gone before"

Bonus points is miniskirts are a uniform option  :P

Maker, I hope not...

I know that the 100 has apparently grown the beard in it's later seasons, but every time I watch a new episode, everyone seems just as insufferable, self-righteous and unlikable as they were back in Season 1. And Clarke is frequently the worst offender when it comes to all three of those traits. Not since Revolution have I actively hoped a show would ditch their main character for someone who isn't often a designated hero.

(Honestly, the show would be way more interesting if Murphy was the protagonist. Good or bad, he's at least interesting!)

The whole fleet of sleeper ships leaving Earth because of a war (probably) and going somewhere without a war (probably) is the same premise as the flight shooter Freelancer. Not that I think it was pilfered just that it's a fairly straightforward and functional plot device.

There are others that have use the idea as well.

It would be interesting to see if they take anything from Firefly, because it was cool to see in that show that there was a more "traditional" looking futuristic society on the Core Worlds, compared to how the Rim was more obviously a Space-Western as it was furthest from civilisation.

IN one of the trailers, where N7 and Co. are running down the hill and some construct starts building itself up, it reminds me of Halo Forerunner constructs. From that, I can imagine one of the races to be similar to the Forerunners. Technologically more advanced than any other species, has a higher purpose within the galaxy, left behind their artifacts when they disappeared.

That sounds like Protean though.

As I think I've probably made fairly clear, I basically just want them to straight up quest-ify episode plots from TNG for the planets we'll be encountering. Planet of the Renaissance aliens, planet of the giant space jellyfish, planet wiped out by big space snowflake, planet where we make first contact with the aliens who speak in idiom...

Oh, and this isn't really related to all that, but I've come to realise recently that I like it when set-pieces involve big-arse spaceships doing their thing in-atmosphere. It really helps reinforce the scale of them, always looks sorta eerie - how's that huge thing staying up there?! - and super cool besides. So, some of that would be nice, I guess?

What if it was Farscape?

What if these 'arks' were never meant to go to Andromeda in the first place? What if somebody cocked up while testing new technology and they ended up a lot frelling further than intended?

'We made it.'

'Actually ma'am, about that . . .'

I don't actually think this will happen of course. I just wanted to make a dumb Farscape joke. I love that show.

Which one?

Depending how you look at it, the three games almost belonged to three different franchises...
