I played with a male Inquisitor twice, and romanced Josephine and Dorian respectively.

now, after playing DA:O and DA2 again,I'm finally coming back to DA:I,but this time,I want to play with a character from a different gender or race.

With that said, who would be the best romance option in the game?

It's a tie between Cullen and Sera.

There is no "best", since people have different tastes, but since you want to play a female Inquisitor, I'd recommend:

Wanna play a different gender or race? How about different gender AND race?

I think the game is very compelling as a female elf who romances Solas, since all the elfy stuff towards the end of the game becomes personally significant, and Solas feels the most tied to the main story.

A female human or elf who romaces Cullen is also lots of fun.

A female vashoth who romances Sera is also fun, from what I've heard, because Sera herself has a fun and lighthearted romance, and she loves Qunari women better than any race. It's easiest to romance her as a vashoth.

Playing a dwarf and romancing Iron Bull is hilarious for the size difference alone.

I had to try hard to enjoy the Solasmance.

Cullen made me swoon. And one of only two marriage scenes in all of Dragon Age. Dooo it dooo it dooo it! As an elf is fine.

The ones I've done: Cassandra, Josie, Sera, Iron Bull, and Solas, plus I've done the full flirting chain with Harding.

Of those, I'd have to say it's a tie between Sera and Josie. If you get someone who is appropriately...compatible with Sera (non-elf, non-mage, and a casual attitude towards the Inquisition and such) it's great, but Josie's is almost as good and is more versatile, so to speak, in my opinion.

The Solas romance, of course, does quite a bit to enrich the story, but the romance itself overall was a little bare bones and didn't feel like it meant much to the character.

Didn't care much for Cassandra or Bull's (plus I like hooking Bull up with Dorian, even though it starts a little creepy, it ends in a heartwarming enough fashion that I can look past the fact that the first couple conversations are rather...uncomfortable). Harding also deserves an honorable mention and I kinda hope she ends up as a future game companion because I think that could be a fun one.

I'd like to try Blackwall's someday, but I haven't yet. Not really interested in Cullen's or Dorian's.

They are all entertaining in their own way. Depends on what you are looking for really. Blackwall was super slow and a bit boring in the begining, but that's of course imo :) Cullen is fun, especially if you like adorable awkwardness mixed with random self-assuredness; Solas is fun and he has a bit of a nerdy bent, but of course you know that's rocky; Cass is really cool and the whole process of getting beyond her tough exterior is interesting; Sera is just super goofy and entertaining but also can be difficult to get along with depending on how you play your Inquisitor; Iron Bull is all around fun and has one of the most hilarious (and yet still endearing) romance scenes in the game.

Anywho, that's my super short synopsis of what each romance is like :)

Romancing Cassandra is sweet, a little syrupy, but sweet.

Romancing Blackwall is meh.

Romancing Solas...unless you like elfy, don't bother, it feels too esoteric for me.

Romacing Cullen is great

Romancing Bull...eh, it's got some humor in it, but no more than Bull's normal personality.

Romancing Sera...it helped me release a lot of frustration with her character, but I ultimately wasn't moved by it.

Romancing Dorian...waste of time.

You have that impression even after playing Trespasser? My impression was the romance had a huge impact on him and what he thinks/feels about things.

I meant more while it's going on. Like with Josie you can just kinda go hang in the courtyard whenever, and she'll have various comments about it if you talk to her. Or for others, you'll see occasional banters about it. There's very little of that with Solas. There's the kiss scene when you get to Skyhold, and the breakup scene at the end, and that's mostly it. Granted, there is more in Trespasser, but there's very little acknowledgment of it, in my experience, while the two are actively seeing each other.

It's really down to personal preference. You don't state what type of romance you're looking for, so it's rather difficult to offer a suggestion on that front. Dorian is my fav, but you already romanced him.

However, I will say that Cullen is only romancible by female humans and elves, while Solas is only female elves. So if you want to play a qunari or a dwarf, those two are out. Everyone else is open as far as race is concerned.

If you want to narrow it down via other criteria, you might try basing your decision on class or something along those lines. If you're going to play a mage, and like the idea of Cullen romancing a mage, then you play a human or elf female and romance him. You may instead prefer to have coordinating classes with the LI, so Cullen would get a female warrior (with templar spec), and so on.

If you don't have a preference for gender or race, you might try a qunari male and romance Iron Bull because the size difference is minimal. Conversely, a dwarf female because the size difference is extreme. Whatever floats your boat.

If you're really open to trying different things (race, gender, class) there are all sorts of ways you can narrow down your choices.

I've done all except Solas and Bull. Bull I'm really not interested in as a character and from what I've heard, the majority of the romance is actually just talking about BDSM and how Bull knows what the Inquisitor wants better than the Inquisitor. The fact that people like this attitude reminds me why 50 Shades of Grey is popular.

Solas I just really had no interest in, he's an interesting enough character, but I honestly resented the fact that the game effectively gates some of the relationship between him and the Inquisitor to female elves only. Morrigan had a nice friendship track for female Wardens and male Wardens not romancing her, so the DR plot could still be emotional to someone not romancing her. Anders could still be a close friend or a bitter rival if not romanced. Solas can still be friends with the Inquisitor, yes, but I never felt he was that close to the PC. It was more of a professional respect, or at least as much as he's capable of providing to someone who's not an ancient elf. Only a romanced Lavellan gets a true emotional connection to him, which waters down the impact for me.

My canon romance is Cullen, as he's a fairly easygoing romance but it does have some angst in it. He's tied to the plotline with Samson/red templars and is an integral member of the Inquisition. He's committed to the cause and isn't there for his own benefit. Plus my canon Inquisitor is a faithful Andrastean mage which makes for an interesting pairing. And with the wedding in Trespasser, he officially becomes a partner to the Inquisitor in their mission.

I liked the Cassandra romance as well. She's one of my favorite DAI characters, which helps. I liked that trying all of the nice or flirtatious dialogue options didn't always net approval from her. She's true to herself and doesn't put up with empty words. And it's nice to see a more romantic side to her, but it's not romance gated since we still get hint of it through her book scene with Varric.

I liked Sera because I played as a Qunari Inquisitor. I haven't tried to romance her as an elf or mage, otherwise I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it. She's a fun character but really requires the PC to agree with everything or else back down quickly. She's not someone who tolerates opposing opinions.

Dorian was okay, my first playthrough romance. It was a bit melodramatic as so much of it revolved around gayngst, IMO, and he hoped for love and not just sex but wasn't going to put his heart on his sleeve. I like him as a character but too much of his content was an early 2000's gay coming out film. I've seen plenty of those in real life and don't feel a strong need to play them out in my games.

Josephine was good and prior to Cullen was going to be my canon romance, for the same reasons Cullen has. She's tied to the Inquisition, believes in the mission, and is always there for us. But her content is a little short, the duel is a little silly, if entertaining. And honestly while I like her character, there's not tons of depth to her. Plus no matter what it seems like she leaves the Inquisition at the end of Trespasser. The DLC indicated that she had grown disillusioned of its mission or felt that it was time to step down.

Blackwall's romance was about as interesting as the rest of him. I.e. not much. I had already played his personal quest so knew the twist, but the romance didn't really seem to add that much to the reveal. I kept waiting to get a better sense of him as a person and not a GW but never did. I actually liked him less after it due to some of his actions, which are pretty cold to someone he says he is in love with.

I think everyone has their own ideas about best romance. I have tried Cullen, Solas, and Blackwall romances. Cullen was awkward an cute.  I don't know why but Blackwall romance was slow and short IMO. I liked both of them but for me Solas romance was great because he had knowledge about a lot of things and all. Also, he was a story-related romance which affects character at the end of Trespasser. Unless your character is an "elfy" elf, it is not really possible to romance Solas.

If you played a male character twice, I'd roll a female character. I'd go for Sera since I find her romance to be the "best" from a personal perspective, but as you can tell from this thread that's incredibly subjective. To me it feels complete in the sense that the pacing is good and there's a lot of content, and from an emotional standpoint Sera's romance gives me all the feels. I like her best with qunari and dwarves, but you can romance her with any race.

Cullen's romance feels very complete and well-rounded but he's not my cup of tea as a LI. Blackwall's romance was very well done (so long as you like angst), I just find him a bit dry as a character unless he's being romanced (or being raunchy in party banter). Bull is my favorite character in the entire franchise and I was glad to finally have a LI who was explicitly into kink instead of just vaguely alluding to it.

Solas's romance is sparse but ties in with the plot, and Cass seems a bit sparse also but she's a sweetheart, so... worth it?

Best romance? Subjective. Out of the romances I have done, Solas romance is my personal favorite.

Huh, I've only completed a few romances, but when it came to Sera, playing a Dalish First, who was pretty "meh" about Dalish stuff and was more open to other things, was pretty neat.

Instead of Sera immediately having the hots for you as a qunari, it was a more gradual romance that had her loving you for you. I liked it more as an elf mage.

I can't really claim a favorite, as I've barely done the romances and saw most only with YouTube, but my canon is my Inq is with Cass, helping her rebuild the Seekers as a one armed Loyalist Knight Enchanter.

Wow... after typing that, I wonder if I just like tsundere-ish romances... I really should do a Josie romance to break that...

I've only completely done Dorian so him. I've also mostly done Bull's bet meh. I'm busy with Solas atm and you know what I miss? That you could walk up to Dorian and ask to go do something and you'd get a FTB. Really simple and I imagine not at all hard to implement but it added a lot for me. I wanna do Sera too at some stage. Maaaybe Cullen.

The question is not a good one because the "best" romance is a matter of perspective and taste. This is the kind of question that starts flame wars. Every LI has it's positives and negatives. They're all good in different ways.

Sera has the best romance, very sweet, funny, sexy, and complete. People like Cullen too but I have tried to romance him three times and I can never finish the game because I find him to be a bit dull. Solas is my favorite LI because he's super sexy and interesting, thanks to his writing and VA, but his romance just makes me mad, though it is very elfy. I haven't romanced Blackwall but I have everyone else and they were good, but not as complete as Sera's. I recommend romancing her with a human, dwarf, or qunari for the most positive results. If you roll a really elfy Dalish you might have trouble. This is just my opinion, YMMV.

Personal favorite is Solas (with an elf mage). First playthrough was Blackwall and he bored me. And I've tried a couple of times to complete a playthrough with Cullen, but I can't seem to finish them. I got the Cullen-like romance already with Alistair.

Maybe, but I feel like the discussion has generally been civil and positive in this topic so far, so it's been fun to read everyone's reasons, even if I don't 100% agree.

I've only done two DAI romances (so not an expert), but I liked Sera's a lot.  The scene were she confesses her love for the Inquisitor (in her special kind of way) was pretty awesome. Her romance felt the most reactive of any I've ever done.  It's the rare part of the game where the Inquisitor's race makes a difference.  Plus she updates her journal to go along with what's going on in the main quest so it doesn't feel so detached from what's been going on in the Inquisitor's life.

The only bad thing about it is I like shipping Dagna/Sera more than Inquisitor/Sera, lol.
