This type of thread always boils down to the type of personality you assign your Inquisitor.  It takes all kinds and all that. For my main inquisitor, I made a male/human/mage. I thought about remaking him as a qunari just to check all the "pi$s off the chantry" boxes, but I stuck with him. For him, Josie is his beau. She just fits him best. Cassandra was really hard to shy away from though.

Can't really point to one single thing about the Josie romance that makes her the best fit for my Inquisitor. Only way I can explain it is that the other LI's feel like the types of people you play with when you are searching for "The One". Josie is that One... for my main Inquisitor anyway...

Oh, I guess I should mention the Blackwall Romance I've done 1.5 times. The first time, I wasn't paying that close attention because I just wanted to bed a Warden. (Haha eggs on me)

But the second time; the flirting pre Skyhold was great. It had a heat to it that could go somewhere and that I enjoyed, and I like the Voice well enough even if the beard can be too much sometimes.

But then. BAm. You become the Inquisitor and he immediately starts trying to push you away; dating the Quiz is a big deal and he knows he's a fake. On the ramparts, it can feel like he just dumped a bucket of ice water down your pants. That's fine; except that this flirt soft locks you in. So. Realistically, I would have liked to have been in a huff and just not continued the Romance (role playing) but, no, now you can't break it off till 2 scenes later when he shows up in your room. Additionally, the funny innuendo flirt banter that was so sexy suddenly disappears and he's super serious like you just asked him to become your exclusive boyfriend without even having dinner first. (Speaking of, no one respects your privacy, he is the second LI to just show up in your room without discussing it first.)

Every romance scene involves him saying he's not good enough pre Revelations. Which points to massive self esteem issues to me (if I didn't know it was the whole lying thing.) But his "you're too good for me" can really turn your romance party into a pity party where it seems like you're just trying to conjole him out of his depression for a kiss. Then of course, the big reveal; and the prison convo/judgement convoy is pretty great entertainment as there is a lot of back and forth and emotions to swim through. But they aren't positive ones, this man's killed children for money in "another life".

The walk up to him and get a kiss anytime you want scene is a bit rough; it feels like instead of a quick kiss and make out, you instead pose quite awkwardly for a "big thing." This is improved slightly by the cheek caress.

Post revelations is a bit meh. You get your "I'm glad you're alright" post Cory battle. Get your standing on the balcony, although I prefer how Cullen seems to actually embrace/hold you over the arm around the waist side thing.

Trespasser DlC had some good moments; kind of made up for all the negative of the main game. And I appreciated the ending slide if you keep him as Thom Rainier.

I reiterate that I found the Solas dance hard. There is nothing but Tragedy that direction, too. So, if you want tragic, that is the way to go.

I actually intend to romance every LI but Iron Bull. As a female dominant myself, I can't role play a submissive person without my entire mind screaming that it's horribly uncomfortable. I managed a one night stand with him but broke it off ASAP in the next conversation when he started to lay down the Law of the Bedroom.

Edit Add:

  • I intend to romance Dorian with a Templar Trevelyan. I like the idea of his following Dorian to Tevinter with Templar skills most mages there can't handle, even if he has to drop his shield and go one handed. The only man I'll go warrior for.
  • I intend to romance Jose with a Female Dwarven Rogue I make as adorable as possible. Disney Princess Dwarf fighting a duel for love? Totes cute.
  • Intend to romance Cass with an Elven Mage. Balance the power duo, and echo some Ameridan awesome.
  • Intend to romance Sera with a Qunari Mage but I don't expect it to go smoothly because she'll see Solas as a mentor.
  • Will never ride the Bull past a one night stand.
  • Already romanced Cullen, Solas, and Blackwall to pretty much completion.
  • And plan to date Scout Harding with someone, I don't know yet, because I just decided a day ago that I would after I finished JoH for the first time. I'll roll my favorite race (Human is feeling a bit stuffy right now) as female maybe; toss up between Mage or Rogue.

I just got that from Harding first time in JoH. Is this a reference to a discussion I haven't gotten elsewhere?

Nothing specific, just some jokes on Twitter and elsewhere about the Inquisitor's obsession with elfroot. Here's an example:

LOL oh my gosh, I get it. I've stopped to loot and pick up herbs and stones in the middle of a lame battle I knew my companions could handle. Awesome.

Plus, elfroot grows virtually everywhere and never stops being useful, so you're likely to gather it throughout the game.

In my headcanon, Varric gave my Inquis the nickname 'Elfroot' :)

So far I only completed the Blackwall romance - from the romance options for a female character, he seemed the most interesting. From all options, I would have chosen Dorian. And from the non options, probably Varric.

Blackwall was ok, I felt, there could have been more content. I like him as a character and was a bit sad, that the romance was kind of short.

I try out Cullen now with my human female and after that maybe Iron Bull with my dwarf or next elf female. I'm not very interested in Sera or Solas as romances. Solas kind of creeps me out tbh, although I was surprised by his last conversation with the inqui in Trespasser.

I would try Josephine, but I read more than once in this board, that her romance is very disney-like. And I don't like DIsney movies a lot.

I like romancing Sera and Josephine. I've heard good things about Black Wall's but I haven't bothered with it.

The only bad thing about it is I like shipping Dagna/Sera more than Inquisitor/Sera, lol.

That's a breach of privacy :P

Also Dorian gives you an incredibly hot line about lightening after you pick Templar which is awesome :) My Elf Templar Dorian romance PT is actually the one I consider to be my cannon PT :)

I never romanced any of the female LI's. As a straight female myself, I'm only interested in the male romances.

The Iron Bull romance is very nice. I love how sweet and affectionate he can be to the Quizzie, and the game makes it clear that he's very careful to do things that he knows she likes and enjoys; he never pushes past what she's comfortable with. That being said, I did find it a little difficult to be in what seems to be a completely BDSM relationship. I enjoy some tie-me-up-tie-you-down stuff myself, but being in a relationship that consists only of that makes me slightly uncomfortable. I was able to headcanon that aspect of the relationship as being on the mild side during the main game, but in Trespasser when they made those comments about shackles and doing it while the Quizzie was hanging from the chandelier... I wasn't too crazy about that. That being said, Bull is very attentive and supportive during the romance once you get him to that point. It's clear that he loves the Quizzie very much, and that makes it easier for me to play through that part.

Blackwall is also a sweet romance. He can come off as being self-pitying to some people, but I see it more as him struggling with "How can I love such a wonderful person, and even worse, how can I allow her to continue to love a murderer?" It's a struggle where he wants her, but can't come to terms with someone as amazing as her loving someone who has done things as horrible as he has. He's very loyal and supportive, though, and I love how he loosens up and jokes around once he's been accepted for who he really is.

Cullen is a fantastic romance as well, I think. I'm so glad they added him in, and for being a late addition, they did a great job with him. My own personal recommendation- romance him as a mage, and also have your Warden be a female mage too. It adds this new dynamic to the romance that I don't think you get otherwise (though of course the romance is great either way). I know its a bit sappy, but I love the "happily ever after" ending where you get married and see his family. I think it's sweet.

Solas... Solas is okay. I wasn't crazy about him, and I was sad at how his relationship with the Quizzie ended. Maybe if you romanced him and decided to redeem him in Trespasser, their love will have a happier ending in the next game. If you like angst, though, have at it.

Depends on your Inquisitor. I made a male Elf Rogue Inquisitor that was interested in the idea of nobility, that wanted to have a family, and preferred someone who is open to Elven culture. Josephine was perfect for this.

Later on, I made a male Human mage Inquisitor who was a mix of agnostic and apatheist as well as someone who was interested in understanding the world and reality around him. He is also not interested in having kids, prefers magic and research over noble parties. Naturally, he ended with Cassandra.

So it truly depends on what your Inquisitor is like.

Solas definitely. It's the most related to the plot, and contains some of the best content Bioware has written.

LOL,tbh when I started my second playthrough,I was intending to romance Cassandra, but after disliking my old romance with Josie,I decided to make my Inquisitor homosexual (Dorian sexiness kinda convinced me though).

I might try to play with a female elf mage and romance Solas.

This thread... I'm bemused that I'm straight but I still want to romance all the LIs. I guess, in a way, I see the characters as gender less? And "deserving of love". On top of that. I don't actually have to get that up close and personal with them. And it's a way of getting to know a character better. Greedy for all the content. :P

I'm one that only does the romances that match my own gender/sexuality, so just the m/m options, but I watch the others on YouTube if I think they'll be interesting. I can spare an hour to see the dialog, but not a whole playthrough that takes like a hundred times that.

I didn't like Iron Bull at all. I'm not into the weird BDSM angle they took. I don't like how they constantly had to hammer in that he's the dominate one, etc. It's just not my kind of romance. I'm not into power dynamics and heavily defined "roles" in relationships. That just left Dorian. I know at least one person mentioned it, but the "gay angst" angle of his relationship seriously annoyed me. Do we really need more gay sob stories? Do we need more homophobic dads in media? Just write a guy that's into guys and have it be a non-issue. I don't want a "gay story", especially if it's just going to be the usual "daddy issues" story. I want to be able to have my male character enter a romance with another male who's story is as related to his sexuality as your average heterosexual character. Which is to say, it doesn't need justification, a history of persecution, or any specific pointing out to speak of. This seemed to work fine with Sera, so I don't know why they had to make Dorian so about being gay.

If I were able to pick any option, it would have been Solas as a first choice. I really like picking the romances that most coincide with the story. Solas has the most dramatic arc, obviously, and the most reaching consequences. I also think he's a really interesting character and would have liked to had that extra connection with him. I like playing an elf, so it was disappointing that I couldn't have the extra dialog about history and vallaslin removal scene, which means a lot for elf characters. As a second choice, I would have picked Cullen. He has a really cute romance with a happy ending AND you get a dog in with the deal, which I would have easily preferred to either Iron Bull or Dorian.

I guess I would say Solas is the options I'd most advise, if you're up for playing any race/gender. It's really strongly tied to the plot and you get some interesting history that nobody else gets just for doing it. I think it makes the search for Solas a lot more interesting during Trespasser. It depends on how much you hate Solas, though, I guess. Some people can't get passed that. I liked the Anders romance, so.. that should explain it. lol

Cullen is my fav and canon, did one Solasmance and hated the sense of betrayal I felt for my Inky. I loved Cass and Sera but didnt feel the need to replay that again (as I did with Cullen). While Dorian is my fav companion in DAI I haven't romanced Dorian as I like his romance with Bull better and haven't romanced Bulll because Im not into that and Blackwall I also did the romance once and once was enough.

Personal preference I like female elf mage (story wise) but its your chance for something new role-play and story wise go with something you've never played before class wise, pick a race and flip a coin for gender? up to you.

Blackwall is my personal favourite - giant slabs of angst wrapped in beards and Northern accents are my jam! - but more objectively I think Sera's romance is one of the best they've ever done. Her romance quest is up there with The Long Road and Zaeed fighting with the arcade machine for great BioWare comedy moments.

Proving that all of this is entirely subjective, though, I found the Solas romance underwhelming. Maybe it would have been different if I'd played it unspoiled, but I thought that all of the good parts were in the breakup scene. (And Trespasser, I guess, but any relationship that doesn't really get interesting for me until after the traumatic split isn't going to make my list of favourites.)

I have yet to romance either Cullen or Cassandra.
