Ben was always going to be a Knight Enchanter.  Its the entire reason I created Ben in the first place.  It allowed me to create an Obi-Wan in Dragon Age.  Something i had been wanting to do since I left my first attempt at such a thing in the Fade in DA O.  Seriously.

Kara was a bit more difficult.  Because in play through 1 I kind of envisioned her as sort of being a Legolas.  Someone who would transition between Dual Daggers and Bows.  But sadly Inquisition did not allow one to do that as easily as say Origins.  I had always envisioned her as an Assassin though.  But, given 'Thousand Cuts' Tempest had a lot of appeal to me too.  But, given the eight slot limit, and given three of those slots were taken up by Mark of the Rift, Evade, and Stealth...for me the three bread and butter pieces of a Rogue...and then eventually a fourth was taken up by Poison Weapons...it really only left one option.  To continue with Assassin.  Considering I wanted her to be an Archery specialist and considering if I did use Tempest there would be two, maybe three abilities I would have to use, so...again...Assassin it was.

I roleplay what specialization they have, especially in this game where they added a little more story elements to it.

I was really hoping for a cut scene driven trial though. Oh well hopefully DA 4.

Well Artemis was always set up to be a Knight Enchantor, so he is.

I like the hit and run style of playing an Assassin, so I made Kallian one. Headcanon came later.

Roleplay always. Any class can work damage wise, I don't think the gameplay is that hard to justify prioritizing damage.

I pick mage first and foremost. I feel that because of the ongoing 'magic vs. the chantry / templars / demons / qunari / the world' theme in the DA universe, it's the most relevant class, the one which makes the story the most personal.

The spec I first went with in DA:I was Rift Mage because, again, from a story perspective, I felt the Inquisitor would be most interested in mastering Rift magic since he has a Rift manipulating artifact stuck to his hand.

I generally have RP reasons for my specs, they aren't always particularly and I'm will to shift my RP in favor of a spec I like.

Riona Lavellan went Templar because she'd just been tossed around by Corypheus, a mage.

Knight enchanter, but I would love to be able to have a mage with a magic bow.   :)

I went with Artificer/Dw rogue. Kinda goes with the relic hunter theme I was going for...and still very different from Varric to keep him around.

My first Inquisitor was pure RP reasons. He was always poking into things that were best left untouched, so as soon as he talked to Your Trainer, I knew that he had to be a rift mage. Unstudied powers that may or may not impart insanity? It was straight up his alley. I sort of lucked out on that one, because RM turned out to be my favorite mage spec to play.

Now, my second character was going to be an artificer. Her backstory was supposed to be that she was a really good trapper. Buuuut during my first playthrough I found I didn't like playing Varric's spec. I decided I'd make her an assassin, because I enjoyed playing Cole's spec and because I really liked assassin in the previous games. In order to make that fit, I shifted her personality in a slightly different direction. I remember being a annoyed with myself for "caving in" and picking gameplay over RP. But in the end, I was able to play her in a way where that choice made sense.

The dichotomy between true RP choices and gameplay-driven choices is blurry, IMO. I think it's ok to sometimes make surprising or "out-of-character" choices, because it adds an extra facet to the character. It's another story hook to have in mind. In the sense of, "ok, why did they make that decision for this particular situation? What's the interesting story behind this seemingly 'off' behavior?" It's the same reason why I don't go back on dialogue choices, even if they don't exactly match what I expected. The seemingly-ooc moments add details to this person's life story. Makes them something more than a robot that always marks the "mage freedom" or "devout Andrastian" checkbox.

I was thinking acrobatic rogue skills could go along with the bow.

Joke? I wasn't joking, I guess I could've expanded on what I meant though. I'd love to have a mage with the acrobatic abilities of the Arbor Wild ancient elves, who, instead of carrying around a magic sword hilt, has a magic bow grip that focuses magic the way a staff would, but it would be more precise. I also think about a bow upgrade in Shadows of Mordor, where there's arrows that allow teleportation, what ever point you fire at, you get transported there, and eventually you can use it to mount a catagore. You could use the maneuver to fight a giant, using a transport/stab button.) Not only would the weapons be magic, but so would the armor, a hooded cape like what Lelianna's spies have that allows the mage to become invisible when magic is focused into it.

I found assassin/DW rogue and tempest/archer rogue to be great combinations, but any class/spec is fun :)

Head canon is a Knight Enchanter, but tried every class and specialisation once. Prefer female elven mage or rogue even after mage was watered down to almost nothing (seriously play DAO as a mage and you'll get what I mean). Rogue Archers in DAi best version in all DA games.

Greetings.

I am curious as to how people picked the specializations for their Inquisitors.

Did you pick your Inquisitor's specialization based purely on roleplay ?

Or did you pick your Inquisitor's specializations based purely on min-max damage ?

Or was it a bit of both or perhaps was something else involved ?

Have a nice days and cheers.

Option Three: Considering that my two previous protagonists were troublemakers, I decided to make my Inquisitor a slightly traditionalist knight who valued honor and genuinely believed that noblesse oblige

Then I made him a bow wielding assassin because nothing says "Honorable Knight" like a guy who excels at murdering people from a safe distance.

Reaver is my favorite because I can just run around killing everything, Not how a hero should act but against dragons It was the most second most useful (Knight-Enchater being the first) Templar and Knight-Enchanter are my second favorites because I found them most useful and rogues just didn't appeal in this game unlike DA:O/A.

But yes my "canon" inquisitor is a reaver female Trevelyan
