Same goes for many devs in all likelihood, but I think it would be nice to have at least SOME space opera style themes going on.  Fear not devs, there is still a ton of time left before the game ships, more than enough time to commission a few pieces from some composers, may want to tap the japanese composers that do anime since they seem to have latched onto that style of music in anime more than any other nation.

Need inspiration, take a look at this anime theme set to babylon 5 first ones.  Note the increased Majesty and wonder because the creator did NOT use electronica/new age babble to convey what was going on in those scenes.

Mass Effect has been using a synthwave/orchestral soundtrack ever since ME1.

Why on earth would Bioware drop that amazing blend they've created, for your 18th century bull****?

I guess you don't like Electronic music and prefer the average "epic" orchestra but I wouldn't go as far as labeling us kids simply because we love electronic music who is btw around since the 80s.

As far as I know, Bioware took inspiration from the Deus Ex games, which took inspiration from a retro-electronic type of music which existed back in the eighties or seventies. This is not about a new age of electronic-music-loving kids

But I agree with you, it wouldn't hurt to use other genres of music (as long as it fits)

Can I get a Tattooine cantina-like atmosphere filled with scum and villainy?  I like variety when it comes to music providing it's appropriate for whatever atmosphere it's trying to convey.

I like a good, old-fashioned orchestral space opera theme as much as the next nerd - I actually posted the above video in the 'Ideal Character Music' thread - but Mass Effect has deliberately eschewed that style of music from the very first game, to help differentiate itself from the rest of the genre. And while I don't necessarily prefer Mass Effect's music over more traditional space opera fare, it's definitely part of the series' identity, and I think it'd be a mistake to lose that.

That's not to say that a fusion of the two styles couldn't be compelling. The Tron: Legacy soundtrack does a remarkably effective job of combining more traditional orchestral themes with electronic music, and I've always thought it had a certain Mass Effect vibe to it.

More "kids" music ;) good electronica in truth takes patience and a calm mind to truly enjoy it.

How about the music interacting with the gameplay? Like in Catzilla. ;)

Well, the devs have already pissed on everything that made the original Mass Effect games great, they might as well go full CoD and just cram it full of generic rock music.

Tfw someone actually made a benchmarking program around the idea of Longcat and Tacgnol.

As someone whose music collection is 90% classical,  I just want music appropriate to the mood of what's happening.  This can electronica, dubstep, classical or whatever as long as it doesn't intrude.

Late 60s and 70s if you go back to Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream.

I don't know about the rest of you, but this sounds an awful lot like the Mass Effect I know and love.

This.  I don't usually listen to electronic music outside of ME, but to me, the synth is an integral part of what makes Mass Effect Mass Effect.

I don't think people mean literal  opera when they say "space opera" OP. And that video was bizarre.

Here you go...

Although technically this is P-Funk, it is as close to disco as I think is tolerable for a ME game. ;)

*snip*

Someone stuck a random piece of overblown music that doesn't fit very well over some B5 scenes that were perfectly well served by Christopher Franke's excellent original score and you think that's a good example of what should happen in ME?

As has been pointed out, electronica in sci-fi is not a new phenomenon. I'm 41 and I love Vangelis' work on Blade Runner. I've nothing against orchestral music being used in ME but I wouldn't suggest that it's in any way intrinsically superior to a good electronic score.

Everyone has there own taste in music,  the minimalist approach in two random videos I clicked would have me turning the music off in game.

Less repetitive motifs would make this type of music fine for background music in game.

Just my 2c worth.

Good thing most games come with the option to turn off the music. ;)

Lol.  after 2 playthroughs,  I turn music down to about 10% if not completely off in just about every game.

I really like the Presidium music. When you're walking around it seems nice and peaceful, but if you listen closely it sounds ever so slightly sinister.

Some other pieces I like are the Noveria, Feros, Virmire and Therum soundtracks. I feel they nailed the atmosphere of all those planets.

For some reason there were not really any memorable music pieces for ME2, but I think that was mostly because it was too quiet and I had mooks to shoot at.

I really liked Suicide Mission and the Clint Mansell music too, but having that style of music doesn't always fit everywhere.

Overall, I think they should stick with the synth-y style, which I'm assuming they will, considering Sam Hulick is going to do the score (I think).

Agreed.

On the other hand, a different medium and genre, but did anyone see/hear the soundtrack and scoring for the Game of Thrones season six finale?
