As someone whose music collection is 90% classical, I just want music appropriate to the mood of what's happening. This can electronica, dubstep, classical or whatever as long as it doesn't intrude.
For what it's worth, I think the electronica stuff does have a place in some spots, like the futuristic dance bars, or the entire omega base. But for grand themes?
... I am sorry but that electronica stuff is not up to the task.
There is a reason classical music is still around, it ages better than any other type of music ever created. And it never died, it just moved to movies, tv shows / anime, and games.
If they must persist with the electronic synth style music, that's fine, but they can still create some in this sort of vein:

Note the same sort of buildup you get with more orchestral scores, the sense of latent power and scale.

Mass Effect has been using a synthwave/orchestral soundtrack ever since ME1.
Why on earth would Bioware drop that amazing blend they've created, for your 18th century bull****?
Holds up hand, and releases an exorcising power to remove the demons of lesser taste from your mind!
That aint from the 18th century!

How about the music interacting with the gameplay? Like in Catzilla.
I'm going to have nightmares from this.
I don't know about the rest of you, but this sounds an awful lot like the Mass Effect I know and love.
Stellaris has a great soundtrack. Definitely got mass effect vibes from it.

I don't think people mean literal opera when they say "space opera" OP. And that video was bizarre.
Dear god, kids these days have never even seen babylon 5!

I think it is possible to have synth music be up to snuff, but you really have to have a good sound. IE Noisia. Or good blends where you have instruments and synth music interacting (my favorite). ME has always had crappy soundtracks.

Classical vs Electro ... why not both?

I don't think you'll find too many people around here who share this opinion. Mass Effect, IMO, has one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all time.

I am a composer. This is a piano piece that I wrote for Dragon Age. It depicts the last flight of the last dragon which I named Varitan. It can be found at https://soundcloud.com/alfred-dean-1.

I like the Mass Effect music the way it is, but sometimes it's fun to see something different.
