As per title. Finally got round to building a decent enough PC I can play this, just wondering what trials (if any) would e good for first playthrough on nightmare difficulty? I was thinking the one where enemies scale sounds like it might be a go?

Try playing with "walk softly" and "even ground on". and maybe "grizzly end" though I am less a fan of bears just having 3x more hp than usual. If it too difficult and not enjoyable, turn "walk softly" off, but I personally think that trial adds a lot to the dynamics of the combat in this game.

I agree with ottffsse for the most part.

I would definitely recommend 'Even Ground'.  It's a bit boring without it.  You go to an area you out-leveled (way easy to do) and then start one shotting mobs and then you feel like you have to play with your feet to keep it challenging (even on nightmare).

I would not recommend 'Walk Softly'.  It can be quite frustrating, even for veteran players.  Many times it just drags fights out for a long time.  Plus there are those elite barriers...which are almost impossible to take down otherwise

Keep in mind that Walk Softly or Even Ground, let alone both, will level you up much more quickly. If you are fine with that, no worries, but if you want to retain a more Normal rate of leveling, you should also enable Take It Slow.

FWIW, my standard Trials are Walk Softly, Even Ground, Grizzly End and Take It Slow.

Is this 'Even Ground' thingy really going to get you better loots for fighting against up-to-par enemy?

I mean, I visited an area that had higher level enemies (I was 12, enemy was 16) and I still got a steaming pile of elven dung. That makes me think the theory is just a lie.

Yes, but not directly as loot drops. You get rewards through Special Shipments back at your house in Haven, or the Undercroft in Skyhold. You have to accumulate an unspecified number of "trial points" before a random reward is rolled. No one knows what the thresholds are. We only know that some trials give more points that others ("significantly" vs. "slightly").

You also get more XP for promoted enemies.
