I'm sure the first elvhen tried seeking out their "gods". But it was impossible with the Veil blocking them from accessing the eluvians that led to each evanuris' location.
So those in the Vir Dirthara either died out or entered the sleep that puts of aging, while those stuck in the real world could only carry on as best they could and try to keep the truth of what happened alive. But over time the truth broke down and became legend. Things got changed, omitted, added to, etc.
Perhaps the idea that praying to the elven "gods" had any effect was made up by the Dalish when they were given the Dales and tried to rebuild as much of their culture as possible. It might not be that praying will make the elven "gods" return or escape Fen'Harel's trap, but they might believe that the "gods" still watch over them and can influence the world around them to their benefit. Thus, they pray to Andruil for a good hunt, or to Mythal for protection. They pray to Falon'Din for funerals, or Elgar'nan for vengeance against enemies.
It might also be a belief that praying to them makes them stronger, and will allow them the strength to break free from the trap. In any case, all these beliefs likely arose after the true elvhen had passed on, and perhaps their children too. As for seeking them out or trying to free them, if these "gods" can't free themselves, what hope does any mere elf have? They think Fen'Harel was a god too, so again, what hope does an elf have in destroying a trap set by a god?
Instead, I think the main belief is that articulated by Lanaya. One day the clans will reunite and have a land of their own where they will restore their kingdom and reclaim their former glory. Until then the Dalish keep the lost lore. That means passing it on as written, and not making changes to it if they can help it. So any suggestion of seeking out the "gods" would likely be dismissed.

I'm sure Artemis super duper curious about this topic; he's always been a bit of a angontistic Athestic himself (he's never believed in gods; afterall no proof) although most Dalish Elves don't share his super curiousity about this; I'm sure he wasn't well liked in the tribe due it, but eh, he didn't care much in all truth - he has a daughter to raise (she's the third of there clan; his sister is 2nd).
