So I have found it really hard to kill a dragon. As expected since I'm a fire mage. I think everyone in my group is level 12. I'm trying to romance iron bull but I just keep wiping at this dragon. This is my third play through and I'm always awful at killing dragons, I get them down to about a fourth health and then my whole team wipes. I use tactical mode I tell them to hold their positions but it's like they want to walk into fire, like my whole team is suicidal. If I control my mage then I can be sure to use my couple electric spells instead of fire but if I'm not controlling Viv (Ice mage to match her cold heart) then she is awful at battling. I find it hard controlling both at the same time. So I don't know the best group to bring there's Viv my ice mage, Dorian my electric/necromancer mage, Iron Bull 2 handed weapons and all rage, Blackwall who is sword and shield with some protecty stuff, Cass is swords and shield, Solas is spirit and some rift magic, Cole is daggers and assassin, Varric is bow and arrow with some of his special tree, and that should be everyone. I really want to kill this thing with Iron bull in the party so I've been trying Viv and the Iron Bull with a plus one mostly, blackwall seems to stay alive the longest.

You could buy a Tactician's Renewal amulet to change your mage's spells temporarily. It's sold in the Undercroft. It resets all ability points of character who uses it.

Assuming your taking on the Ferelden frostback it's more vulnerable to taking damage from cold spells not fireso you need ice staves to take this beast down ideally so I'd equip yourself with spells like Winters grasp and Fade step with the frost step upgrade at least and a Ice staff  as well

I thought you meant the necklace on the BioWare store....cause I really want that.

Honestly I just waited till I was a little over levelled, then went back to the easiest dragon and started there.

So if I do this and take viv and ironbull who would be my best option for the third companion.

It really depends on abilities of your companions. I always take two warriors with me to kill dragons so you could take Blackwall or Cassandra. Guard abilities of warriors really help.

Don't start with the Fereldan Frostback in the Hinterlands. Start with the Northern Hunter in Crestwood. The Northern Hunter is electricity based and does not summon dragonlings, making it an easier first dragon kill, particularly for a fire mage.

The downside of the Northern Hunter is that you have to have Crestwood open, meaning, you have to have progressed the main quest to at least Skyhold, and you have to drain the lake, which usually requires clearing the keep first. You don't have to clear the keep, but not doing so requires a little glitching to get around the keep.

I killed the Northern Hunter with a Level 9 party, so your Level 12 should do fine with it.

It helps to gear up as much electricity resistance as possible, at least belts and, if you have 3 potion slots, Electricity Resistance Tonics, upgraded as much as possible. Same goes for any dragon fight, gear up resistance for the element of the dragon.

If you can't do the Northern Hunter, at least watch this video for strategy on how to defeat the Fereledan Frostback, pay attention to the tips it provides in writing on the screen:

It recommends Blackwall, Sera and Dorian, but you can use IB and Viv if you prefer, it doesn't matter if you are before Skyhold and specializations. Before Skyhold, all warriors, rogues and mages are the same.

If you are after Skyhold with specializations, it matters what specs you bring. Blackwall as Champion is better than IB as a Reaver. Cass is also better, due to her focus ability.

Viv is better than Dorian, because of her focus ability, but Solas is better than Viv since his Rift mage attack abilities are can do real damage.

Sera's Tempest is better than Cole's Assassin on AI, but Varric's Artificer is best, if he's up to Elemental Mines and Leaping Shot + Looked Like It Hurt.

In any case, you absolutely must respec into Winter. Fire abilities won't do any damage to the Fereldan Frostback. At least have an ice staff and Energy Barrage.

I can relate to the op.  I had a very bad time killing dragons until I learned a few things from multi player that helped, class wise anyways.  I also got crushed a lot when i played as a mage.

I would go Solas. Give him an ice staff and set his highest priorities as Barrier and Revive. Load Bull up with fire-resistant armor and a cold-inflicting weapon and have him draw the dragon's attention while the rest of you thwack it with magic.

If the dragonlings are too much of a pain in the ass, go after the dragon in Crestwood instead. It's only one level higher and doesn't summon dragonlings.

yeah sometimes I wait till I'm at least 1 level above so it's a slightly easier fight too but I still get exprience from it as well as  the goodies the dragon drops

You could always just hold your party in the cave that leads to the dragon, and use a mage with an ice staff and energy barrage to slowly (and I mean slowly) cheese the dragon. It's too stupid to fly over and roast you, so it'll just stand there.

There's no honour in it, but it gets the job done. Just make sure you have a good book to read while you press two buttons for 15 minutes.
