The Calling is the signal to a Grey Warden that their resistance to the darkspawn corruption has run out. Besides hearing the song of the Old Gods, they begin to undergo physical mutation as they transform into ghouls.

Nightmare, who no doubt fed on the fear of Wardens faced with death, could create a false song of the Old Gods, but only the song. None of the Wardens were undergoing mutations. But the idea that they were all dying was enough to scare the Wardens into desperate action.

I got the impression during Legacy that it only worked as well as it did in Legacy because Corfishystix didn't know he was doing it, essentially, and because the Wardens didn't know he could. With him asleep, it just sort of mixed in with the normal "song" and since the modern Wardens weren't aware of his capabilities, the desire to be freed more or less mixed in with their own thoughts and they didn't know enough about it. The moment he wakes up and starts forcibly saying "WARDENS GO DO STUFF", it becomes clear and Wardens are trained to block that out, just like they are with Archdemons.

No, codex in Legacy indicated that his control over the Blight made it impossible for Wardens to attack him once they were close enough. They were incapable of landing a finishing blow. His control might not be perfect, but there's no indication of the Wardens being able to block out his influence.

It doesn't have to speak through the connection to the blight. It just has to project "constant madening whispering into the wardens head". Wether it does so via actual blight or via its inherent demonic mind rape powers is probably irrelevant. I very much doubt that a Warden can distinguish "constant maddening archdemon whispering in their head caused by demonic magic" from "constant madeneing archdemon whispering in their head caused by blight related magic".
I could admittedly be wrong here, but the fact that the Nighmares calling is more than once explicitly stated to be a fake one leads credence to it not actualy involving the Blight.

Demons in the Fade can't just project into the minds of mortals like that, especially non-mages, not that we've seen. Not to mention it would have to track down and identify the mind of every last Grey Warden in the South to make it work.

By "fake", I merely take to mean that it was created by the Nightmare rather than an Old God.

Fair point. But then again the Nightmare is vastly more powerful than any normal demon. With the possible expection of the Titan it is most likely the most powerful creature we ever see in the Franchise. We know little of what it is actually capable of. Could really be either explanation.

Fair enough, though that creates an admittedly-small plot hole in Varric not knowing why the Wardens sealed him rather than killing him. I guess it's possible Hawke was just really stingy with sharing Codex information not that that ever stopped Varric before.

Might be feasible through it's alliance with Corfishystix, though. One makes their identities clear, the other starts giving them the nightmares that make them think their end is coming.
