OP, sounds like this should be posted in the "Gay Knight and Shining Armor" thread...but then again this is about Mass Effect not Dragon age.  I agree for the most part but I think Mass Effect has done a much better job with gay/bi male characters than the Dragon Age team. Most of the complaints are on the Dragon Age side of things. The writing there is just not so good and they tend to rely on lazy arch types.  Mass Effect so far have been able to bypass them with Steve, Kaidan, Samantha, and Liara.

Yes, ME3 was good with m/m romance, but we can't say same from the ME1 and 2... Actually promising tendency, we will see.

TL;DR: Bioware's representation of gay/bi men in their romances as all being promiscuous is stereotypical and offensive to me and a lot of people who've fought for years just to be regarded as equals.

I'm guessing there's plenty of gay/bi men who feel the opposite.

Until it's confirmed that there is an option for us gay men who isn't promiscuous I won't be funding Bioware by buying this game if they are only interested in portraying us as all as being promiscuous.

You'll buy the game and play it like everyone else.

As a straight guy I didn't find any of the female romances enticing. Liara and Femshep is best of a bad bunch to be honest, and that's down to the voice work.

Some decent romances all-round would be good.

OP, I only had the energy to read the TL;DR...

If you're preparing to be offended either on the basis of past stories or presumptively for future ones may I suggest:

Please just deal with what is presented.

BioWare already get beaten up for trying to offer fair choices and romances to different people as it is.

I hope they will ignore your advice only in so far as that allows them to make the story choices they want to have from a limited pool of characters.

I recall in DAI, Josie was a sweet romance, not the slightest bit slutty.

It is possible in MEA that a character may exemplify the non-promiscuity that you advocate, or they may not.

There would need to be a dozen companions or more for all romantic and non-romantic flavours of varying orientation to be met and that won't happen.

I expect and am delighted that BioWare offer diverse choices, but they need to tell interesting stories, and with 7 companions maybe, those characters are not going to 'represent every possible character' in every game.

I'm not wishing to be harsh, but expecting detailed breakdowns of orientation and promiscuity description ahead of launch is unreasonable.

Personally, I hope that romance choices are not detailed at all pre-launch so that they may be discovered in the game.

In short, you may find your wishes are met or maybe not, but ranting or worrying about BioWare on this topic seems a misplaced target.

(hair or side-content, fair game...)

Was Kaidan a virgin???? I don't really recall any implication that he had never, ever had sex before in his life, whereas Alistair was definitely a virgin (because I recall that being clearly stated about Alistair in the game). It's possible that I missed something with Kaidan since it's been a long darned time since I've played ME1 and the rest of the trilogy.

At any rate, what I take issue with is you defining Iron Bull and Dorian as being exactly the same because they've both slept with their fair share of people. It was made pretty clear in DA:I that in Tevinter open same-sex romances are not accepted. Even if Dorian were deeply in love with one man, it's not like he could marry that person or have any kind of open long-term relationship with them. I would posit that the reason Dorian has had a lot of flings is because he has his physical needs and does like sex but is also afraid of becoming emotionally attached to someone whom he can never openly love.

I think it was mentioned in the Dorian romance thread at one point that Dorian was actually in love with someone pretty deeply back in Tevinter but that it was basically a doomed romance. I can't find the relevant dialogue, but maybe someone in the Dorian thread who reads this will know what I'm talking about and can link it. I could very well be wrong about this point, though - aside from being ages since I've played ME games, it's also been a while since I've played DA:I at this point. If so, mea culpa on this point.

As for Iron Bull, he's basically a pansexual/bisexual/whatever-you-want-to-call-it 007 in qunari form, which is totally fine. It's not like the qunari are all about their feelings as a general rule, so I assume that Bull is mainly interested in satisfying his own physical needs solely for hedonistic reasons and/or stress relief. It's not that he's incapable of love/attachment - it's just that he doesn't seem to have ever formed any of those kinds of attachments until his romance with either Dorian or the Inquistor in DA:I.

I've never gotten the obsession with romances in RPG's. They're nice but if there's a crappy set of romances it shouldn't ruin the game. I hated all the romances in DA:I and ME2 and I still liked ME2. If the romances in a game aren't to your fancy i'm sorry, but Bioware should worry about writing a good plot instead of trying to cater to everyone's romantic preference.

Wait, let's look...

Promiscuity is usually defined as... sleeping around, even. In extreme cases.

Let me see. Only Isabela has been known to do that out of all DA/ME romances.

In Inquisition, the gay romances (Sera and Dorian) do not sleep around. One of the first things Sera tells you is "I DON'T SHARE." Dorian does not sleep around.

As for Mass Effect... Kaidan and Steve were already talked about, and Traynor goes the exclusive way as well.

All in all, what you brought today is worth... One quarter point.

Well people are like that. Some had partners before, others are still virgin. Some like to have sex with different people, others prefer to be monogamous.

I think it wasn't really attached to the sexuality, more to their background as a character. The chantry boy is inexperienced, while the Assassin who grew up in a whorehouse likes to sleep around? Oh shock!

In case of Mass Effect I think we never had a real promiscuous person with us. It isn't really something that you can live out on such a small environment like a spaceship. Some might now say Jack would be the only one but I don't really see her as one. She wasn't the one who started the sexual encounters and she is actually "purer" than most think. I think Jacob is worse on that part since he couldn't even keep his pants on for like half a year so.... Well whatever I doubt they pull such a thing off in Andromeda anyway.

Really, you didn't like any of the choices in DAI? I enjoyed that cast of characters myself, didn't try all of em but attempted a few different paths. YouTubed the others I had no interest in. I suppose quantity doesn't equal quality aha. Also waifu wars r srs bsns lol.

Yeah I don't think Kaidan is a virgin, there is nothing in the game that suggests he is a virgin.  I think the OP reached that conclusion because he never had sex with the girl from his biotics class, but that was when he was a teenager.

Dorian and Bull were the same in that they were both promiscuous.  Regardless of the reasons behind it, they both got around. That's why the "The Gay Knight in Shining Armor" thread exists, because it tackles the same request for the DA devs.

I'm more concerned that a gay/bi characters personality/story is going to be mostly about them being gay/bi.

No disrespect to LGBT people but who cares?. At least Bio is more open minded and accepting of gay romances than others. You have the option for LGBT romances and they seem pretty cool so far.

(Maybe someone can think that Alenko virgin, because of this talk, but though this only shows that there is no one in his life. ~1:20)

The gay/bi characters in BioWare games are no more, or less, promiscuous than the straight ones.  You're "afraid" of a "problem" that doesn't, and never did, exist.  Typical PC Knight

I agree that he doesn't really need to worry but you could at least be nice about it. ;)
