Just look at that ****. The odds off having a squad being 50% straight and 50% something else is just nonsense, especially in that type of a time period/setting. Homosexuals/Lesbians/*Insert special snowflake sexuality here* are a huge minority, it's that simple. The odds of having a squad that looked like the one in Inquisition is just minimal and blatant pandering to a vocal minority who don't even play games, hence why Inquisition gets mocked by everybody outside of this echo chamber.

It's just quota filling nonsense and Bioware have rightfully been mocked for their token inset approach to character design.

-slowly tilts head-

I swear I will never understand people's problem with several queer people being friends / in the same group of people in Bioware games.

EDIT:

And because of he 'time period'.

Dude it's like 9:41 DRAGON. It's a FAKE time period where it was stated homosexuality isn't even a big deal unless they're nobility in some places, I believe? (Someone can correct me if I'm wrong)

If your warden is a female Cousland in a relationship with Leliana Origins for import, during the Winter Palace they advertise Leliana as Queen Couslands mistress.

Homosexuality is perfectly FINE in some parts, like ORLAIS which is where most of DAI took place . In this case, setting and time period is BS for being salty xD

It also makes the character look as if that's his main "thing".
(Cassandra for example was all about the Seekers and how they have been misused, not about her sexuality, Dorian should have been similar.)
.

Hmm... I always though that Dorian's main thing was that Tevinter needed to be reformed. But, sure, in retrospect we can see that his personal quest did give a lot of people a wrong impression. I guess that makes it a design flaw.

Still, I 'm not sure there's anything relevant to ME:A here.

I interpreted Dorian's quest as revolving around the fact that, all his life, he's failed to live up to his fathers expectations with his sexuality being an aspect of that.

Of course, people just latch onto the "gay" thing.

I don't think that players being dimbulbs is a reflection of Bioware's quest design so much as it is an indication of players being dimbulbs.

I'm guessing that the fact that conversion therapy was a controversial topic in the US in the not-so-distant-past had nothing to do with that, right?
The preaching couldn't be more obvious, regardless of the excuses. It's just another example for using a video game as a soapbox.

Talk about dimbulbs.

Design flaw? I doubt it.

It's working as intended probably, someone wanted to use DA to talk about "conversion therapy", and they did.

"Controversial" isn't the right word. A few evil wretches were practicing it and the rest of the nation was duly horrified.

Still, it's Bio's job to know their audience and write to it. Even if that means writing down.

I have no horse in that race.

(I do think that as long as no one is actually harmed, and people choose for themselves, they should be allowed to take any kind of psychological "therapy" they want. Just like people are allowed to use a large variety of "alternative medicine" methods, despite the fact that many of them only have a placebo effect.)

The point was that this quest was overt preaching, nothing else.

May the Flying Spaghetti Monster save me from "writing up" if it means using flimsy excuses as soapboxes for political preaching.

That's such a rotten pile of crap.

Literally the stupidest thing I've ever read, here's what you need to do, carefully remind yourself that whatever "gay" characters in Bioware games or whatever is kind of impossible, they have probably the best gay characters you'll find anywhere.

I don't know where you invented all this other crap, but why on earth would you harrass the people that actually even make bisexual/gay characters anyway? Why not take your problems to the other media where they don't show up at all.

Because here may someone hear. I think, the direction is good, but everything can be improved ever. In fact, that more gay/bi characters are promiscuous, than straight, and that is uncomfortable for many people. Why problem if someone describe this?

Being gay wasn't a sidenote there. It was an integral part of that quest and also an integral part of his romance.

Is it really integral? Let's say the intended spouse was the right gender but he just couldn't stand her. You get the same plot., except the specifics of the magic are different.

Though it would work a bit better with a female Dorian, I think.

That's always been my thinking. Overall, Dorian spends a lot more time talking about his issues with Tevinter culture than he does Tevinter's issues with his orientation. It seems like he would have left it behind sooner or later anyway.

TL;DR: Bioware's representation of gay/bi men in their romances as all being promiscuous is stereotypical and offensive to me and a lot of people who've fought for years just to be regarded as equals. Hopefully Andromeda will take influence from ME3 and have a Bi option and Gay option, one who is not promiscuous with no prior sexual history and the other option who is that so everyone has representation. Until it's confirmed that there is an option for us gay men who isn't promiscuous I won't be funding Bioware by buying this game if they are only interested in portraying us as all as being promiscuous.

Okay, I'm gay - and these representations also annoy me.  While Dorian was promiscuous - he was too lascivious for my tastes and Bull was also way too candid about sex.  Zevran was - of course - the worst.

But Anders?  Too whiny to be promiscuous.

Kaiden?  The best options I've had so far.  It's a shame I feel like they tacked on his romance for me (cause they did).

Fenris?  Brooding and angry... but not promiscuous to my knowledge.

Steve Cortez?  Promiscuous?  What?

And let's be serious about Dorian - he's a dandy and a flirt - but he doesn't actually sleep with everyone in Skyhold.

And can we really say that Bull is a "gay stereotype"?  Are we saying that pansexual people who have sex simply as a means to relieve stress in a very mechanical way... are stereotypical gay men? Cause once Bull falls in love - he stops all other sexual activity.

Look - there are genuine problems with representation - but Bioware is not the enemy.

In fact - having a character - gay or straight ACTUALLY be promiscuous would be something brand new for Bioware... and players would lose their minds to find their X-mance was unfaithful.  It would be glorious.

I'm just going to go ahead and say this, edit literally have no idea what the OP is even saying, but holy smokes what a draining post accusing Bioware of all things of failing to promote LGBT when they pretty much created the "gay/bi with alpha tendencies" character out of nothing.

So I guess I can say I sort of see where you are coming from on some level but everything else is just.... yeah... no.

That's also true, most of the bisexual/gay characters are fairly deeply committed to a kind of romantic relationship a lot of the time, the promiscuous flair and drama is just for show really.

Dorian's homosexuality wouldn't have been considered integral if Dorian didn't waste the first half of his quest ranting about how no one should care if he likes men.  I think Dorian didn't get the memo that no one in DA cares if he does.

Still, it's Bio's job to know their audience and write to it. Even if that means writing down.

So Dorian's quest was considered "writing up"?

Ok, why is there any problem with Kaidan then in ME3? Why is there even a problem then, Bioware gave you what you want, so why are you dissatisfied?

Ok so, everyone likes bisexual Kaidan, so just more Kaidan, there we could of just said that, we get it, can we stop with these posts now?

They literally marketed Dorians sexuality as a thing due to him being their first "pure gay Homosexual character" or some nonsense.

See, I heard this claim multiple times and when I researched it, I did not find that Bioware had marketed Dorian Pavus in such a fashion. This only made sense given that Dorian Pavus was not the first gay companion made by Bioware. I think that was Juhani but she may have been predated by someone else.

There were a number of articles and such that put Dorian Pavus forth in such a sense but I haven't found anything that indicated that Bioware did.

Still, ask most people who played DA:I about Dorian, how is he going to be remembered?

Dorian the amazingly powerful mage?

Dorian the time traveler?

Dorian the wise?

Dorian the blood mage?

Dorian the mage who freed the slaves?

Or Dorian the gay with daddy issues?

(and I actually didn't dislike his character, he was somewhat charming and funny, and had some witty dialogue)

Dorian is funny.  Dorian is a flirt.  Dorian is a powerful mage.  That is how I will remember Dorian and that is how I describe him to friends.

Pretty much how I remember him. That and how I loved the friendship between him and my Inquisitor especially since I'd headcanoned her as a bookish sort which was why she always had a book on her armor. I could easily imaging the two discussing books, magic and history together.

That he was Tevinter and she was Dalish added an interesting aspect to the relationship given the past of their respective people and how it would be viewed by their people in modern times.

All correct, it's just a shame they didn't use his personal story to tell something truly interesting about him, and instead chose to go for the signature Bioware daddy issues plot, with added preaching on top.

I would much rather get a window into the new anti-craziness faction in Tevintar than be preached at.

What preaching? That you should use mind-control superpowers to change your children's sexuality against their will? That's not really a moral. Even if you try and generally it to just "don't try to change your children's sexuality against their will" it's still not really preachy - it's a truism.
