BW hinted at having a family that are story related. Now assume that these were Ryder's brother or sister. This can take the form of a DAO-style origin, where each gender has some mutually exclusive story lines. If there was a conflict between the two, it would allow you to experience it from both sides. In that part MEA's story and some of the squad mates can be introduced as well.

BW has done something like that in DAO and DAI, even though it was costly, and may do it again for MEA.

In that case selecting a gender will, besides romance options, also have more than just a cosmetic impact. It will be great to play the game at least twice.

Your thoughts on that?

Edit: Below you'll find some more info about what made me come up with the idea:

From an interview with Mac Walters we know that:
- The protagonist is called Ryder.

- There is more than one Ryder.
- She has family, which is tied into the story.
- The player will choose the main character differently than in the trilogy.

I hope they are your twin.  So whoever you make in the character creator they will look the same.  Then there will be a falling out.  And then the storyline will be about who the real Ryder is and who everyone should be fallowing.

Added some more info in the OP, which may support the idea.

I only play as a man. So this really doesn't appeal to me that much.

It's neat and all. But I don't think I'd bother playing as She-Ryder.

So in the end would actually wind up being cosmetic as 75% of the fanbase never see's the fem exclusive content.

Family feuds are fun when its not your actual family so I like that.

As good as BW styled cheesy romance is, it gets a way bigger thumbs up than it really needs around these parts.

Its great don't get me wrong, love it. But its always second to the story, after the comradery and never before the scale and scope of the action.

So it gets a shrug from me for replay value. Romance is icing the game is the cake.

I wouldn't complain if they did anything you suggested because others may enjoy that and should be able to.

So there's my two sips on the matter.

What do you mean by that? I don't think you play both in the same playthrough.

Cheers. ;)

I understand that. I guess more people feel that way. I used to play as a male only, but I tried to play as a female once and I liked it, because in a third person view the character doesn't look like me anyway. So I rarely roleplay as myself and using another gender or species becomes more fun that way.

I really hope they don't do what AssCreed Syndicate did.  The brother was nothing more than comic relief.  Very poor characterization.

I see the appeal.

I played as a F.E.M in DAI for my final run just to make it different and it was pretty good. Just cant shake that feeling though that I'm on the outside looking in and trying to understand the female perspective. Which is frustrating enough IRL TBH.

As a man I'll never really get it.

It'll be interesting if the brother/sister is the/a antagonist.

Some time ago I heard that they were interested in the idea of different POV playable characters like GTAV (I don't remember if it was related to DAI or MEA). This could mean that there are different stories for each Ryder and you control each of them. (it could be interesting to have at some point a decision to make them antagonist or not). But I also heard that there is only one playable Ryder (I think) and therefore this was just a possibilty they contemplated but discarded and they are going for the DA2 approach where you control one sibling and the other is just an NPC.

Personally I was not happy with the DA2 family and what they did with it so I am really worried we get the same crap in MEA.

I would be happier with no family so we have more options to personalize our Ryder.

I wouldn't mind since I do both gender's regardless.  I hope in addition to that (assuming this is correct) that there are two distinct paths as a member of the Ark Initiative and that of the N7 "nemesis."  If there's enough distinct dialogue options between the male and female Ryder you could get 4 playthroughs.

Mothers sick suitor aside, they didn't really play that big of a role. They should have. But that's another story for another forum.

I liked how the sibling relationship was handled in DA2, fractious or close dependent on your choices.

There's obviously a danger that family can be too constricting in terms of your characterisation but equally i think it can add an additional layer to play with.

I agree, as long as the story of the family is engaging enough to make me care but doesnt override the bigger story that is going on i will be happy

It would be good only if they do it correctly. It's hard to strike up a balance between such a thing without coming off as choosing a "favored" class

For example, if females got an extra quest line while males got nothing, I'd actually probably never buy it. Same if males got the same thing. That would be favoritism on the part of the devs.

I'd rather just have a set family who's looks change based on cc choices.

If the sibling is going to fill the same role, say and do the same things regardless of whether they're male or female then I think money would better spent on one badass sibling. Otherwise we get a Bethany/Carver situation where not much is done with them and they disappear for most of the game.

I have a feeling that N7 guy is Ryder, whether father or older sibling, though latter would require a lot of additional VOs and animations.

Anyway, judging by Bioware hints, I'm pretty sure that FemRyder and ManRyder are siblings and both will be present.

The role could be anything. The sibling could be leading another group to investigate another system to colonize. The sibling could be a crewmate on the ship.  Maybe the sibling is married with children.

I'm not worried about it.

I like DA2 with Carver/Bethany. Too bad neither were available for Act 2 and most of Act 3
