I have a feeling that N7 guy is Ryder, whether father or older sibling, though latter would require a lot of additional VOs and animations.

Anyway, judging by Bioware hints, I'm pretty sure that FemRyder and ManRyder are siblings and both will be present.

In DAI there were mutually exclusive quest lines for obtaining the support of either the mages or the templars. And those were fairly long and detailed. Note that there were two voices for each of the genders, so despite the cost BW did it anyway. Very cool.

Too bad neither were available for Act 2 and most of Act 3

Well, that's what happens when you have two candidates for one character slot when you barely have time for mandatory ones.

I liked how the sibling relationship was handled in DA2, fractious or close dependent on your choices.

There's obviously a danger that family can be too constricting in terms of your characterisation but equally i think it can add an additional layer to play with.

I agree.  I actually liked both siblings.  The only think I would have added/changed/requested would have been to pick the sibling I know there are some who would have picked the same one each time no matter what, but I'd have liked to play a game with all mages, which I've done occasionally.  We'll see what they do and I'll hope for good characters.

Yeah i think ME:A is going to be pretty decent no matter how much people criticise it

Cheers. ;)

I understand that. I guess more people feel that way. I used to play as a male only, but I tried to play as a female once and I liked it, because in a third person view the character doesn't look like me anyway. So I rarely roleplay as myself and using another gender or species becomes more fun that way.

I usually play female, but I occasionally play a guy and I've found it interesting.  Occasionally I play them the way I see my husband, kind, funny and occasionally I play them the way I remember someone else.  rude, self serving.    But either way once in a while, it's sort of fun.

It'll be interesting if the brother/sister is the/a antagonist.

Have to admit, I'd probably have a problem with this unless it was based on my relationship with them.  I don't have siblings, so when I have them in a game, I tend to treat them in way that may not be realistic.

But wouldn't mind being able to alienate them to the point they join an unfriendly group and have to be confronted.   DA2 romanced Fenris and had to kill him because I don't really care for the rivalry path.  .

Personally i was thinking more that it would revolve round you trying to stop them after they've been brainwashed/turned to the dark side by whatever the enemy faction is etc. i wouldn't see that as being any different Saren already being brainwashed by the time ME1 starts. For me the key would be to allow some freedom in terms of establishing the relationship with the sibling either by flashbacks or conversations with them during the game.

I'm calling it now. Your brother/sister will fill the classical Jenkings role and die like a total loser during the tutorial.

Do you have any sources that you remember? Love to hear the ins and outs on that.

Sorry I don't remember, I think I saw it in the twitter thread but not sure.

I would place a bet that the N7 character is your older Brother whether you are a Female or a Male Ryder.  They wouldn't have to change dialog much for the character.  Maybe just some nods toward you being either a kid sister or a kid brother.

I am also hoping they end up being an antagonist.

BW hinted at having a family that are story related. Now assume that these were Ryder's brother or sister. This can take the form of a DAO-style origin, where each gender has some mutually exclusive story lines. If there was a conflict between the two, it would allow you to experience it from both sides. In that part MEA's story and some of the squad mates can be introduced as well.

BW has done something like that in DAO and DAI, even though it was costly, and may do it again for MEA.

In that case selecting a gender will, besides romance options, also have more than just a cosmetic impact. It will be great to play the game at least twice.

Your thoughts on that?

Edit: Below you'll find some more info about what made me come up with the idea:

From an interview with Mac Walters we know that:
- The protagonist is called Ryder.

- There is more than one Ryder.
- She has family, which is tied into the story.
- The player will choose the main character differently than in the trilogy.
Source: Mass Effect: Andromeda Interview.

I actually hope it's a little more like DA2, though just barely. Like you get the opposite gender of whichever one you choose (i.e. choose male Ryder, get a sister Ryder). Depending on acting, i might still prefer the sister Ryder over the brother but i'm fine with this since i'll always get the sister on another playthrough. Though, i might play more males instead of females because of this.

Yeah I pla yboth ways as I like to experience every way you can play the game.

yeah have to admit when I play a game I tend to go with a young cute sexy look. I enjoy having badass sexy girls as heroes in my playthroughs. Girls who tend to be nice and caring if you'er good to them. But badmouth them and become their enemy they won't hesitate to kick your ass. At least that's how the majority of my ladies turn out.

The role could be anything. The sibling could be leading another group to investigate another system to colonize. The sibling could be a crewmate on the ship.  Maybe the sibling is married with children.

I'm not worried about it.

I like DA2 with Carver/Bethany. Too bad neither were available for Act 2 and most of Act 3

Carver was a lugubrious little worm, but I like Bethany. I may just be predisposed to the sister because I have one myself and Bethany sort of reminded me of her. That and I just don't like Carver, as I stated previously.

The Ryders are the Lannisters of the expedition. You can play as "Jaime" or "Cersei". Suffice it to say you'll to involved in the pushing of some krogan kid of house Urdnot, who owns an alpha varren, out of an airlock. He will survive.

Say - is that the new, improved P/R system?

What do you mean by that? I don't think you play both in the same playthrough.

My theory is that the...protagonists come from different arks.

Now lets just speculate: brother is N7 guy(badass, renegade, has a agressive squadmates)

Sister-Ai(Andromeda Intiative)-paragon,squadmates are explorers less agressive.

I just hope it sibling isn't an enemy, neither as the main antagonist or persuaded to the "dark side".

I have siblings (a bunch) and the whole "I don't agree so I'm gonna become evil and oppose you muhaha" thing just seems ridiculous in movies and games. (Even if I have had thought about killing ehm beating them)  <_<

Ps. Yes, I know that the relationship between siblings is different with everybody.

Yeah, I tend to agree.

A writer might be able to pull off something like this in a believable manner, but it creates logic problems for the sake of squeezing some more drama.

(like the fact that usually everyone is blind to the conflict of interests that sending the protagonist after his sibling can cause, etc.)

You can trust Bioware when they say it will be new and improved just as much as you can trust them when they said ME3 won't have ABC structured endings.

I honestly wouldn't mind if the sibling became an antagonist as long as he or she was a good rival character. ME2 didn't have one and ME3's cereal thief was a joke.

 My updated view:

Whichever sibling we choose, the protag will look for the missing father while the other

a. dies or

b. becomes a Squad member.

It's based on:

1. The dog tag and the family photo showing an adult with two arms around two children.

2. The father goes MIA or Rogue while exploring or searching for a better home in Andromeda.

3. The father belongs to the N7 cadre(see arrnour). These guys are tested before getting that designation.

4. The protagonist is "untested". Therefore, the N7 guy cannot be a sibling.

5. The "Trick" when choosing the protag. Bio may pull a similar DA2 family drama.

6. Bio's  "... we want you to stick around after a mission..."  gives you an opportunity to look for your dad.

7. While doing #6, the protag builds colonies, builds the Team, searches for tech, fights threats, makes alliances... "saves the world".
