DA2 alert.
DA2 alert.
I dont know, unlike Hawke the Ryder you play as may be any of the two or more members of the Ryder Family. You could be playing as the father, or mother and then shift between one of the siblings, or you could be playing as the son or daughter of the older Ryder who may have gone missing. The video i linked above had some interesting points. The N7 person is not us, but is a Ryder which means they are either a sibling or a parent. I really like the idea of playing the Fallout 3 "Where did Dad go?" angle and tracking down your lost parent for whatever reason, maybe they deserted, or were captured. All we know about our Ryder is that "they are unproven." likely meaning they haven't undergone the same N7 training as their parent. As far as the sibling goes in this case it could go the route of Carver in most of my DA2 playthroughs, in that they die early on... but I like to think BioWare doesn't have to repeat the same story elements in order to tell a new one. Maybe they work as squadmate, I think that\s entirely new. Having a sibling that stays with you the entire game would be interesting so long as they give some clue into what life was like growing up with the PC.
So a better version of DA2? Cause whenever i see anything about siblings in DA games, my minds slips back to DA2.
Yeah. It was cool with shep and only shep.Hopefully not getting murdered as a way for the protagonist to get character development or motivation.

I think they could do an okay job with one sibling if said sibling has really one character arc. BioWare's problem in DA2 was that there were too many Hawke's so that not only were they competing with other characters in the story, but they were competing with each other for limited dialogue. They also played the "watch your family member die" card a little too suddenly. Another problem that is kind of unavoidable with the divergent choices part of BioWare's character development, resulted in the stituation so that if the surviving Hawke sibling a) died b ) joined the Wardens or c) went to the circle/templars, that after that moment, their character is kind of in a vague limbo, with only their death really giving anything definitive, while the other two choices result in a bland scene or two where the character plays dress up.
So if Ryder has one sibling, and they focus on a tight, satisfying character progression/story for that character, it could be good.
IMO, you have a brother/sister, but there is also your half sister which is the asari shown in the trailer.

Did they confirm that? That we have Asari relative? or is this an idea you came up with? not complaining or anything but it just sounds for far out... I don't know how fast Asari Mature, but either way she'd have to be your older half sibling but... nah even still that's weird biologically as either it means Asari physically mature at the same age as humans, or your shared parent had a child extreme early on with an Asari, or... or.... she was adopted? though.. still even then the aging... ugh the Asari are such headache.

Unfortunately, this raises a role-playing red flag for me.
If Ryder has a canonical sibling, will they also have a canonical background?
My guess is yes and no. Comparing it to Shepard, I would say the early life portion of the character background is probably going to be set in stone, hence your red flag, but like Shepard I can still see them letting us pick what kind of career history we have for our Ryder, as well as the specialization (vanguard, soldier, ect ect)
With the whole not being able to pick your background, I realize it fits in perfectly with their "No more paragon or renegade" like story paths as in the previous trilogy such things slightly affected your paragon renegade actions. I think if recall correctly, if you picked a renegade oriented origin, renegade actions rewarded more points, and paragon choices less, and vice versa.
Your Bro/Sis will get indoctrinated by a some ACME artifact and the main plot will be hunting him/her down before he/she go full Saren with the stuff

To make choices more difficult.

I'd see that like a schrodinger thing.
I hope they are your twin. So whoever you make in the character creator they will look the same. Then there will be a falling out. And then the storyline will be about who the real Ryder is and who everyone should be fallowing.
Wondering will we have two protagonist case?
Or two factions case (Good and "Evil" one)? With one sibling being on peaceful/Good side, while other one being on opposite one and we get to chose in CC which sibling and as such side we will be?
In both cases, it would seem then BW went with my mere and humble suggestions....fuuuuuck!
Now I can't make threads no more, so I don't end up being accused for threatening BW to listen to my suggestions lol
Its possible the sibling could be the main characters superior

While perfectly possible, it's also likely the latest Fall Out has had some influence on this decision, among the noted others.

Haha I was mostly joking with my statement.
I doubt BW was like "Oh, lets listen to suggestions of this random person on our forums"...but then again lol that could have happen.....does this means I get blame bucket if 'ME:A' fails?

Nope they didn't confirm or deny anything of the sort. Wild speculation picked up from an offhand conversation in ME3.
Still an interesting thought. Let's pretend for a second that Asari we saw in the trailer was indeed the "other sibling" and that Asari mature along the same line as humans, I like the idea because it lends itself well to my theory that the N7 Ryder is in fact your mother or father, as the photo we see that is on their desk and which is blurred out, has 3 distinct figures in it, 2 of which a small humanoids and the third in the middle being larger and likely a parent. Since the Asari is likely going to be with us (assuming again that she was a squadmate), we'd know that they couldn't be the N7 figure who we see in the trailers, (that's at least what I think).

That's an interesting thought as well. I never thought of that, but that could very well be true. N7 would have no place in a new galaxy except in the nostalgia of our crew members. Huh. Could be that BioWare is trying to get away from N7 altogether. Would kind'a suck if our parent put us on the ship, stepped off to fight the reapers and got left behind. Then your brother/sister got a hold of your parent's armor, puts it on with no knowledge of what it is to be N7, and you've gotta stop him/her.
Hmmm. And then at the end, you finally don the N7 armor.
Has it been confirmed whether or not Ryder is N7 ?
I'd say s/he is if I had to guess, cause 1) they're a BW protagonist, they'll be a OMA badass, it'd make more sense if they were established as a super elite than being a hypercompetent newb. And 2) it would also make sense if they sent one of their best on a mission this important, especially if you're supposed to be squad leader for the expedition.
Of course it's also possible that the N7 person is the intended mission leader but *something* happens that makes them unavailable (stasis malfunction, prologue death a la Nihlus, going rogue, etc) so Ryder is put in their place either because they were 2nd-in-command, because they're the one that comes up with a plan while others argue, because it's put to vote, because something badass you do in the prologue mission, etc
Okay, place your bets.
Do you think , if you have a brother/sister in MEA, he/she is inescapably going to die regardless of what you do for drama
or
he/she is almost going to die, only to end up with a relatively bad fate that you can't save him/her from regardless of what you do
....
for drama.

Spoiler
If that happens then you will pay the ultimate price. We'll burn your hair. ![]()
