Question: What are the unique personalities you gave to your characters?

Hey guys, I've been trying to start a new dragon age playthrough from Origins to Inquisition but I can't get into the game. The reason for this is because I can't think of personalities for my characters, and I always end up playing the same type over and over again. The most fun I ever had was making a unique Warden and Hawke, and did dialogue/choices that I never would have done before, but following through with their personalities made the games SO MUCH FUN.

These were my favourite characters (trying my best to remember, although it was years ago since I played them):

Warden:
Female dwarf commoner warrior
Brawl over brains
Very dumb, inquisitive and naive because she lived underground all her life
Acts tough and intimidating, but no one takes her seriously because she looks the opposite
Enjoys killing, and the bigger the target the better
Thinks mages are scary
Secretly kind hearted, but hides it due to her criminal origin
Easily manipulated (destroyed the sacred ashes, Morrigan convinced her the OGB was the right thing)

Hawke:
Male warrior
Aggressive
Hates mages a lot
Killed Bethany himself at the end of Act 3
(that's all I can remember lol)

DAI: Jerquisitor, always use dialogue option 3 or the red fist. Go for max disapproval. Not a sociopath, just a brute and an authoritarian "my way or the highway".

DAI: Snarky, always use dialogue option 2 or the Confused option (although sometimes the Stoic or Happy option is funnier). Max approval for funny pals (Sera, Dorian, IB), don't care about whether the rest approve or not. My mages are always snarky, it just seems to fit that you have to have a good sense of humor to put up with a Circle or the Harrowing.

DAI: Secret agenda -- lucre. When I played a Carta dwarf, her secret agenda was to amass loot. She only did stuff that had rewards. Every decision was based on what would result in the most loot coming her way. For example, she sided with the Templars in order to put the squeeze on any random apostates the Inquisition ran into, for blackmail or protection money. She was a liar and a thug. She enjoyed punching Solas.

DAO: Goodie-two-shoes. The forthright hero. Can't seem to help it. On a lark, I tried defiling the Sacred Ashes, hated it, reloaded from save.

FWIW, a friend of mine likes to pattern his RP after a fictional hero, like Fahfrd or Grey Mouser, or Jon Snow, or Drizzt Do'Urden. Maybe you could do that?

I start with broad strokes, mapping out different points of view.

So I have...

-Pro-Mage

-Pro-Circle

-Pro-Templar

-Pro-Chantry

-Chantry hater

-Pro-Elf

-Racist against elves

-Sarcastic/Polite/Aggressive

-Hates authority figures

-Always gives anyone a second chance etc...etc...

They're the guidelines I start with then I go from there.

You could also roleplay a character you like from another game, so you could be Fenris in DAO, hating mages and blood magic.  In DAI you could be like Merrill, or Oghren for example.  Or be very like your love interest, agreeing with them most of the time.

Then you can think to yourself 'what would they say right now' and be guided by that.

My favorite one is the one I have now in DA:I I decided he would be funny as a way to deal with what he had seen in battle and the harrowing. He's a human mage named Mishka (meaning little bear) I decided he was going to romance the iron bull. That is were I started and the rest just kind of happened. I ended up siding with the templars which is rare and somehow when I don't care about who approves of me everyone approves of me even viv (which I hate). Though solas isn't the biggest fan because I made Cole human, it seemed like something I would do as a human though I have a great deal of respect for the spirits.

Warden Tabris: Casual, sassy and smart-mouthed. She tended to pick the snarky dialogue option, or the calm one if not available. I headcanon that when she was young humans would bully her and then make fun of her when she got mad, so she forced herself to remain calm and channel her bile into her biting wit.

Hawke: Didn't play the game.

Inquisitor Lavellan: Calm, diplomatic, tends to lose her temper in stressful situations but tells jokes to her close friends. I originally intended for her to be a snark knight like Tabris, but as I played her she realized she's representing the Dalish as she interacts with Andrastians and/or humans, so she acts polite, tactful, and diplomatic most of the time. I imagine she felt overwhelmed being part of a huge human religious/military organization after being part of a small clan all her life, so she often picked "frustrated" dialogue options when dealing with Inquisition affairs at the start of the game. However, when talking to companions she tends to pick the silly/jokey dialogue options (either because she likes them and wants to make them laugh, like Solas and Dorian, or because she secretly doesn't like them but doesn't want to let on and hides it with a joke like with Sera and Cassandra.)

Current Fave DAI: Mara Trevelyan: I started with a concept and ended, via the choices in the game, with something beautiful.

Spoiler

Favorite Hawke: Pro Circle Female Mage Hawke hypocrite; 99% Unapologetically Sarcastic Hawke.

Spoiler

Favorite Wardens: I got a lot of enjoyment from both characters I played. My first DA game ever, with not a clue what I was signing up for. Perhaps a bit of self insert, but the game helped a lot.

Spoiler

Now the way I'm picking replays? I pick a Love Interest and create a character that will find them attractive. This doesn't always mean they will be similar characters.

  • A dalish Elf Warden that finds Zevran attractive doesn't mean he'll nonchalantly kill people. Maybe my Dalish elf will reach out because Zevran is a fellow elf and then find Zevran's hidden pain to echo his own. (because I made my Dalish elf gay and in love with Tamlen, that elf that disappears/dies in the Eluvian encounter.)
  • Vex Hawke is a male Rogue sociopath that likes to think he "owns" his lovers, family, and friends. A mother complex; her unhappiness is really the only thing that morally guides him, so her death will mean Vex loses his only interest in a Jiminy Cricket. It's going to be a dark and bloody road that ends in Anders's execution. I've never killed Anders, so I guess this character was crafted for this love interest story choice.
  • The Hawkes after that will be for Fenris and Isabella. I'm saving Merril for my husband. haha.
  • Varas Trevelyan is a bisexual noble with his own set of fucked up parents syndrome. Will be a Templar Warrior. Handsome and interesting and all for Dorian. He'll also ally the Templars, a choice I haven't made yet in the game.
  • Anise Levellan. 45-55 year old mage widower with 3 elven kids, 18-24 at home. She'll see Solas as a younger colleague (isn't he technically 40?) and not as an awestruck "he's so cool" school girl.
  • And then I plan on doing all LIs in DAI with various characters that haven't formed in my mind yet. Except for Iron Bull. I'm saving him for my husband, because I'm not submissive. My husband got Morrigan in Origins too; I value her too much as my soul sister to ever enjoy romancing her.

I hope all that helped you a bit. I'm loving the freedom in roleplaying Dragon Age Characters quite a lot.

I start with a character archetype and go from there, or sometimes I base my PC on another character from a movie, TV show, or book - and then sort of flesh them out and make sure they fit the DA setting.

My Warden was a blunt anti-hero with a soft, smooshy center that was mostly brought out by children, his sister, his dog, and his love interest. He was illiterate and cranky but fundamentally a good person, and he had surprising reserves of patience. Growing up casteless with an alcoholic mother, he had major issues with his self-worth but eventually found purpose and pride in being a Grey Warden. He was quiet and protective of the weak and sort of hated himself for how easy it was to enact horrible messy violence on his enemies, but a nug's a nug... and a Carta boy's a Carta boy for life. Whenever I wasn't sure what decision he'd make, I'd ask myself What Would Angel (or Mal Reynolds ) Do? and go from there.

Hawke I don't have to do much for because they already have a personality, but there's wiggle room. I made mine a sad clown who used humor to cope with his often ridiculous, occasionally horrible life. He felt responsible for his family, friends, and Kirkwall, and hated himself for letting Bethany and Leandra die, enabling Anders, etc. But he really did try to see the sunny side of everything and was grateful for all the loved ones in his life who stuck by him and put up with him being the Ultimate Trash Lord™ (which he definitely was 500% of the time). All he ever wanted was to live his life in peace, maybe have a burger and a beer and not be constantly harangued by blood mages and templars and abominations and ancient darkspawn magisters. ahaha no such luck, sucker

My Adaar was harder to pin down because we really don't know much about what it's like growing up Vashoth. I went against type and made her a quiet academic who mostly went into mercenary work for lack of options - giant grey horned mages aren't exactly in high demand in other fields. She was an only child, kind of awkward around people because of her size and abilities. I like to think she started the game as something of a shrinking violet, but by the time Trespasser rolls around she's let her hair down and is shamelessly kicking *** and taking names because she's had enough of this crap. She was my most idealistic and diplomatic hero, mostly because for soooo long she'd be encouraged to downplay her intimidating appearance, try to appear meek, etc. I played her a little like Bethany, actually, going from unsure about her abilities to confident in who she was over the course of the game.

I have a variety of characters, but looking just at my "main canon":
-My Warden was a Dalish:
Spoiler

My Hawke is the only character I'm really consistent with. I have a Warden for every origin, and a variety of Quizzies, but though I've tried other ways, there's only one "right" story for DA2, for me:
Spoiler

And finally, the Quizzie I consider canon for now, but whose ultimate fate as the "one true Inquisitor" may depend on what happens in DA4:
Spoiler

Whew. Man, I was in a writin' mood tonight.

Oh man, I'm really bad with picking anything other than the kindest dialogue. I tend to suck up to everyone in the game and going for the most righteous path to soothe my conscience, but I do love to develop my inquisitors as original characters outside the game.

I do suppose there's different kinds of kind/likable paths you can follow, the difference lying in the smaller details. For example, I got a gentle and kind inquisitor, but also an energetic one who loves joking around when the moment is right. Not much of an extreme contrast and probably not the answer you were looking for haha, apologies. I just can't seem to have fun if I'm playing a character who hurts someone or goes against my own morals, intentionally or not :'D But oh well, each to their own, right? //I'mweakcoughs
