Just a little while ago I was having some terrible latency issues playing a game on silver. I was firing my weapon, aiming at the head and the bullets were missing the intended target. Now, I am paying Comcast $64.99 for  what they say is 205 mbs. But, when I run a speed test I am only getting an average of 122 mbs. I am not that savvy when it comes to internet connection crap, so I called Comcast.

The representative proceeded to tell me that I had an older modem/router that I rent from them.  Her exact words were: "The modem/router that you currently have can only handle 50mbs."  She went to say: "What I can do is send you out our newest modem/router that can handle 100mbs."

Me, thinking to myself: "Okay, ya right......!?! Then why am I paying for 205mbs?"

They have me right by the proverbial....you know what!!?! Because they are the only game in town. It sucks to be me, I guess!

But Jallard, others can correct me if I am wrong. The latency problem may not be local, i.e. not a fault due to your end. I don't have any other software to monitor the ping of the connection. I just look at the screen when I join a multiplayer game or starting one from lobby. I run forward a bit as soon as the game start and see if there is any latency. If there is, in the more severe cases, you will find yourself running forward this moment, then the next moment, you are running from the previous spot, again. The more severe the latency, the further back you will find yourself. In this case, you will never be able to kill anything because you will be shooting at something that has already moved away. There is nothing you can do except quitting the mission. This is bad in terms of manner and worst, you will lose all the equipment that you had selected!!! So, when I was using class 4 (the highest level) equipment, e.g. armour piercing IV, cyclonic modulation IV, I will judge how bad the latency is. Can I kill at all? If I can, I will stay and endure the whole session, play as support rather attack. I mean I will shoot to damage so that others (hopefully, they don't suffer the same latency effect) can kill.

Sometime, it can be my connection that;s causing the latency (my maximum is only 2 mega bits!!!! and the line is shared with 20 others users!!! The ISP is milking every penny they can from this copper wire!!) But it is not you, you can spot which person's connection being the problem. Over the years, while in a mission that was not fully populated, we were doing fine until someone joined. Then everything started to stutter, found myself running from the same spot as described above. So, the new person's connection was causing the problem. The other scenario is where all four started the mission from lobby. But you may find yourself in the stuttering situation whenever you are near certain player.

The latency issue is so bad all day today that I cannot even play.  I hate to leave the team in a lurch, but if I can not play, I am not doing them any good. Besides, I am tired of people locking me in the reactor because of it. It has happened twice in the past few days. But, whatever!

If that's true it was terrible this morning. I was casting a Warp at the targets and it was going right through them with no damage taken.  At one point I watched a Dragoon walk pass me in mid air. Even to turn my Toon toward a target to fire on them it was extremely jerky. Then too, once again I could not hear my Adas firing. All this was on silver. I had no problems on bronze. I just tried silver a little while ago and the same thing was happening, although I could hear my weapon this time.

In my limited experience, your connection is pretty good. More likely, it is some local hiccups which will go away on their own. Worth checking with ISP anyhow but if your speed test is fine, this is ME3-specific. Or you just being unlucky and playing off host with hosts being in Russia, China, or New South Wales. There are also people who like to host from Capetown in South Africa and from some village in Alaska with satellite connections. You can get similar lag even if you are hosting if these players are in your game.

In general, this game does not need very high speed connection. I played for the first year on my DSL with 1 Mbps and hosted games with people from Chile, Venezuela, and Europe including Russia sometimes all at once and it was fine because that connection was very stable.

Well, Comcast apologized and are now sending me their newest modem/router. You know what was odd was that I ran a speed test when it was on wifi and I got the same results when it was hooked up to Ethernet...hard wired, which it is now: I was getting 124mbs on both. There is a problem with this crappy DELL XPS system of mine, however,  for some reason it will slip off of my Ethernet and set it on wifi. Needless to say, I will never purchase another DELL.

Incidentally, I was at the Portland Blues Festival earlier today and sat next to a couple from your next of the woods....Northern Virginia. He was here for a conference and brought his wife along. They were having ball.

Concidental topic.... I would be playing ME3 right now, except that I can't connect to XBox Live ever since I got my new Xfinity modem/router.  I spent an hour on the phone with tech support, and their ultimate advice was that I had to return my modem and get a new one.

Wow! This is really becoming extremely annoying. Six times today I have had to Repair the game, uninstall MEHEM and reinstall it after the repair and then reboot my computer, so that I can hear my weapon fire. Six times today and that is no exaggeration.  I am doing it right now, AGAIN! I guess I am stuck playing on bronze or not at all, because if I switch over to silver that's when it happens. That too is no freaking exaggeration. I am sick of it!

You might be right about that. Except that I can play Fallout 4's 64bit game with no issues and with about 50 mods installed in the game. Go figure!?!

Do you know what brand they're using for their combo devices?  My Asus router has a checkbox/option like "Optimize for Xbox" located within its main admin screen.

I really don't trust those Comcast combo units.  Especially the router portion.

$65/month for what comcast alleges to be 205mbps isn't that bad, around where I live comcast charges/rips off its customers for $65/month for 25mbps. But then again, having had comcast's 105mbps package at one point for their business class and now using their residential package, I can say the performance is virtually the same in games. There are many factors aside from download speed that affect this or any other online game.

I lived in a remote rural area up until I went to college

In the great year of our lord 2008 we were still using dial-up internet at my home

Can confirm it was the Best internet service that mankind has ever seen

FWIW, I have a Motorola cable modem (aftermarket...I didn't want their rental Comcast junk), and I'm quite happy with it.  Comcast recently doubled my data rate once the phone company installed fiber cables in my neighborhood.  So I'm paying for 25 mbps which became 50 mbps, but with my Motorola modem I'm actually pulling 59-60 mbps on speed tests.  I read reviews from Comcast customers complaining about testing a good 10+ mbps below their "paid rate"  so I made sure I didn't have to deal with their rental equipment.

With Comcast it depends upon how far away you are from the D-Slam. At least here in the States anyway. For example, I am paying for what they claim is 105mbs, but I am actually getting---on average--124mbs. At least that is what it registers when I run a speed test--if they can be believed.

Pretty sure mine is an Arris modem/router combo.  I didn't see any such check box on my admin screen, and I assume that if that was an option, tech support would have tried it.  If this next one also doesn't work, I'm going to look into options for buying my own.

A Comcast representative miss quoted. Another representative told me I was only paying for 105mbs: But, for another $20 more I could get another 50mbs, I believe it was.  I read a while back that the Pacific Northwest Vice President of Comcast was quoted as saying, that they...Comcast should be charging $100 per month for services. And that was just for Internet access. Corporate greed at its finest. I guest the Chairman of the Board of Comcast needs a newer and fancier multi million dollar Yacht for his collection.
