In FO4, it's fun the first time Codsworth says it but it sounds unnatural when he says it again. He only has two or three inflections/emotions. So it's "Mr Nate...", "Mr Nate?" and "Mr Nate!" and then the line he's delivering. Once you've heard one of those lines once and you hear it again followed by an audible pause and then the rest of the line, you quickly see the gimmick for what it is and it breaks your immersion.

I think the only way to do this successfully would be to have a smaller pool of names and have your LI use it once but deliver the entire line along with the name and then have it be an intimate, special moment where they finally use your first name. It still sounds like a nightmare for a voice actor and you would basically be paying for an entire session devoted to one line, but it could be worth it.

Obviously there has to be some work around where you simply get called Ryder in that moment if you choose a name that isn't on the list and obviously some people will be unhappy if their name isn't there so I don't know. I never name characters after me so I would probably be happy to pick from a pool of names. I also never name my characters anything fancy but I know some people like to get creative.

And there's the problem, you can't account for all of em. Besides, ME has way better graphics than Fallout anyway. I could care less about the first name saying but we'll see.

I'm not really bothered about my character being called by his/her first name. I understand it's very complicated, too much work for little results.

However, it would work for me if your relatives call you in a particular way (i.e. as Benezia and Aethya call Liara "Little Wing") or your lover calls you in a different intimate way (in Fallout 4 I really loved being called Blue by Piper. That was sweet  )

Hopefully they recognize "Erik and "Erika" so I can LARP as my normal self and my drag queen self respectively.

I see Shepard as a nickname...most of my friends don't call me by my actual first name. They call me via my nickname. If my last name was Shepard I would be demanding everyone to call me that for the firefly reference alone. Ryder.....so many excellent jokes! I would totally see using that as a nickname.

Of course Ryder won't be just called Ryder. Parents will call him/her son/daughter, siblings bro/sis, squadmates boss/buddy/dude, love interest babe, stuff like that. Enough immersion.

I'm down with having a set first name. I mean it's nice to name your character whatever you want, but at most you'll maybe see their name written in a codex or something, and in games like ME and DA it's best to just have a set name that you hear people actually say. You know, instead of them calling you by your last name because they're too embarrassed to admit they forgot your name. Or that they never even knew it in the first place.

Sheparrrd. Shepard Shepard Shepard. SHEPARD.

I'd have problem with it. I mean I'd have John and Jane and Jane Shepard if that was a case and I wouldn't be happy at all with having two Jane Shepards that are completely different persons. It would make referring my character harder and headcanoning story for them harder cause Bioware would have taken big decision of my character away from me.

Maybe have a list of nicknames you can choose from, like: (NOTE: this is just a representation, I know the names sound silly)

"Angel-Face" (male)

"Sunshine" (female)

"Dimples" (male/female)

Basically, this would change a few lines, so if your L.I. is talking to you, they'll use the nickname (i.e. a different line is heard), but if that same character is not your L.I., then it would play as "normal".  Likely to happen more often when talking in private, such as on the Tempest quarters or in a quiet hub area.

"Hey Ryder, I heard there's this new rifle called the "Oneshot", I figured you and I could go try it out?"

vs

"Hey Angel-Face, I wanna see how you do with the "Oneshot", are you up for it?"

Small things, nothing that would require entire plot rewrites, but something like that could work if done right.  Just a thought.

I tripped out when my Sole Survivor was called her name. I reloaded to make sure I wasn't imagining things

If anything, I'd just like for your love interest to not always call you "path finder" or "Ryder"

Would be really unsexy and not cute for my real life lover to be calling me my surname as it is associated with my parents and family as well. Really loses intimacy with that. XD

Why not have a list of 25 male and 25 female first names from which you have to choose? Yeah, you wont be able to name your character xXx420blazeitfgtxXx but it will contribute to immersion. In fallout 4 I disliked the fact that I didnt know which names will appear and which ones will not.

Well it would be nice if list was somewhere available in the game, but consulting websites that have collected useable names like Fallout wiki were good enough for me. Found Joe, Ella Marie and North there- Ella Marie not as whole name, but Codsworth mentions one of the names even if you put up two as first name :D

Name list for those who are interested:

http://fallout.wikia...ecognized_names

There definitely is over hundred recorded names- over 60 just for names starting with A. There is regular English names, but also funny one's, some references and some just plain silly- and then there is also names that sound Chinese for example so it's not all English which is nice. Even though there doesn't seem to be any Finnish one's around ^^

Ok but what happen if your name isn't on the list and then is not recorded ? you have a blank ? "hey ______ ryder !"

They burp at the blank, of course. :D

Though, realistically, it could be some derived pet name, which would actually make more sense in this situation

To be fair, the Codsworth gimmick made some sense because, well, he's a robot. So the hiccup may just be a programming glitch or something.

But yeah I don't see this happening, unless they let us pick from a pool of names that will probably be limited, and only have a few NPCs actually say the names.

I guess if you took the default name they could use it occasionally, otherwise go with a generic title. Still a bit of work and John/Jane is pretty boring. Not high on the priority list for me.

Well, Fallout 4 has names like assface among those that work. If BioWare don't have names like that, I will consider it an entirely pointless addition to the game.

Seems like a waste of resources (something FO4 certainly should have allocated elsewhere).  First name recognition is only workable if the name is fixed (maybe you could get away with a half dozen).  I personally don't mind, but I think most would prefer to chose their own. Eh, Bioware, if you're listening, expend the effort elsewhere.

I don't think it would turn out to be worth it. You're still not going to be able to use the first name much without using up a lot of resources or compromising the quality of the voice acting by re-using the same clip in different contexts.

And honestly, I don't think there are all that many times when being able to use the player character's first name would really improve things that much. Most of the time either the title is fine, or the context is sufficient to clear things up. I think Bioware should be more willing to rely on context, sometimes. Its not like we're going to think our LI in an intimate scene is talking about Garrus.
