Greetings folks,

I am doing a caster Sentinel playthrough on Insanity and I am wondering which Tech Armor evolution suits the Sentinel best - Power Armor or Assault Armor and why ?

Have a nice day and cheers.

Assault armor. You need it for the survivability. The 15% extra power damage, and 25% extra shields simply don't add as much to your capability as getting +50% shields when your armor blows up. Also, the increased radius and damage of Assault armor will make the one power you use most often more useful.

Likewise, Guardian is the better option for your class passive. Having a 30% cool down bonus vs 20% almost completely offsets the 15% power boost. Better to cast more often than less often but with a small addition to its damage or force.

Power Armour, for all caster Sentinels.

ME2 isn't like ME3 where powers do junk for damage, but interact with each other well.

In ME2, even on Insanity, powers do respectable damage, and the extra boost IS noticable. For a methodical caster Sentinel, Power Armour is king. Especially if you bring Sniper Squadmates.

Assault Armour is more for the gung-ho aggro Sentinel, which synergizes perfectly with Shotgun training. A Shotgun wielding Sentinel with Assault Armour is basically what the Vanguard SHOULD have been. I personally find that a Sentinel has better CC than the Vanguard, especially combined with Tech Armour detonations. Played properly, this kind of sentinel really trivializes the game.

Always take Cooldown in your passive as well, Sentinel has the highest cooldown bonus in the game (Not even Adept can compare).

For Weapon Training, I suggest either Assault Rifles (Mattock/Vindicator) or Sniper Rifles (Viper), with the recommendation of Viper in base game (Vindicator is great, but the Viper is a beast).

PS: Sentinel is my favourite class, and Insanity is my favourite difficulty, though I don't play Insanity as much these days as I used to (ME3MP caused enough playstyle changes that it takes a while to adapt back).

Assault Armor. Always Assault Armor regardless of how you play the Sentinel.

Power Armor is practically pointless. The small power damage boost it provides is not really worth it; you can get extra power damage from armor pieces anyway. And on higher difficulties, your shields would not stand up too long anyway, meaning your power damage boost from Power Armor would only be temporary anyway.

As cap and gown pointed out, Power Armor gives you +100% shields but when it breaks you are left at only health, but Assault Armor will give you +75% shields, plus another +50% when it breaks, for essentially +125% shields when active. Plus the explosion radius is larger meaning it can stagger or knock down more enemies.

As long as you keep up with research upgrades, your damage powers (Warp, Overload) can keep up with enemy protection increases -- enemy health/protection + damage scale with Shepard's level. So with a few armor pieces + research you can strip the protections off basic enemies throughout the game.

Personally, I would prefer to forgo Tech Armor when playing as a caster Sentinel, but sadly you cannot do that in Mass Effect 2. (I find you end spending more time re-casting Tech Armor than actually casting other powers, which is why I wish you could skip putting points into it).

Sometimes I wonder if we are playing the same game.

With the exception of Harbinger's cover-busting attacks (which often results in being staggered to death anyway), I never had a real problem with Shields as a Power Armour Sentinel unless I was being too aggressive and not taking enough cover. And yes, I am talking about Insanity.

Some people feel the need to rush the game and clear every level as quickly as possible. Personally, I don't mind taking my time and being methodical. Neither is wrong, I just enjoy hanging back and controlling the battlefield (One of the reasons why I love the Viper on him).

Power armor if you want to cast powers. Assault armor if you want to play the most cheesy OP trivialises-the-entire-concept-of-difficulty power in the game. (I'm not saying this wouldn't be fun mind you)

Assault Armour, for the reasons Red stated above.

On Insanity your Tech Armour/shields are going to get taken out a lot, so that 50% shields when your Armour goes down can really save your ass. Plus the larger area of effect stagger is always handy.

I would take Assault as well.

Agree with the above about research with respect to noticeable damage on Warp and Overload.  Both will strip basic protections by Rank 3 if research is kept up with.

It might be worth it to take Power for a couple specific bonus powers though, although not very many.  If Sentinel had Incinerate, it would make power armor a little more attractive as well, IMO.
