All I need to ask is - how many of the players among us, after completing the first game, guessed either of these two:

1. That Cerberus is gonna be the pivot for the entire trilogy
2. That Cerberus will be the 'good' guys (you know what I meant) in the second part.

Only those who played the game in right sequence (i.e. first followed by second followed by the last one) should answer please.

Didn't see that coming in the slightest. We encountered Cerberus as murderers and horrible human beings who were mostly good at getting themselves killed in pretty creative ways. The organisation didn't appear large, awfully widespread or well organised. Not many knew it even existed - not even Shepard who was an important member of the Alliance.

 

My expectations for the second game consisted of remaining a Spectre and part of the Alliance and trying to figure out the way to stop or kill the Reapers. Cerberus playing a role (a significant one at that) and actually getting somewhat useful without stuff blowing up in their face every five minutes was a surprise. To say the least. Not to even mention all their resources. Their appearance in ME3 mostly surprised me in the overexposure rather than their presence or role. I figured we might have matters to settle with TIM eventually.

Initially, I had no real expectations about ME2 even being a sequel to ME1.  I figured that they would just do a series of largely unrelated stories with Shepard as the protagonist resolving various other disputes throughout the galaxy; and that the Reaper threat would just continue to loom out there in dark space indefinitely.  As a result, the Cerberus twist fit right in with my expectations.  I expected ME3 to take the story off in other directions as well (as they had several minor possibilities hinted at in ME1 that they could have gone with - Exo Geni, Synthetic Insights, more Thorians, return of a rachni threat, the Shadow Broker, Hanar religion, etc.) rather than going back to making the Reapers central to the story (and I do believe it is the Reapers who are central to the ME3 story, not Cerberus.  Cerberus is just the secondary thorn in Shepard's side undermining his efforts to unite everyone against the Reapers).  Had they not attempted to resolve the Reaper threat, it would have been very easy for them to just continue on with different installments to the series with Shepard as the protagonist.  I think the ME3 going in the direction it did showed that Bioware did clearly intended to completely wrap up the Mass Effect franchise at that point.

I certainly didn't think twice about some random human terrorist organization that I blew to hell over the course of several side missions would ever amount to anything but a foot note in the series.

I would rather walk a little extra mile and say - that Jack Harper is THE single-most polished and elegant character in the entire trilogy (and the novels as well). But that's me who is a hardcore TIM-fanatic. So, please accept this with a grain of salt...

Expecting, no. Not really. But I have played all 3 games back to back, so I had like 0 time to think about what happens after ME1, because I played ME2 right away

 

That being said I really don't mind that this may not have been expected, and I actually like Cerberus, both as 'allies' in ME2 (so I can hate on them) and in ME3 (so I can crush them ). I love TIM as a character, he's interesting and one of the best things in ME2 hands down. I did not mind being forced to work with them, and I did not mind having to fight them in ME3, because it actually makes a lot of sense after building them up so much in ME2. I liked the fact that we got to fight a group we know instead of some random never-heard-of goons the Reapers indoctrinate so they can fight us from inside.

I thought ME2 would be Shepard actually learning how to defeat the reapers. I wasn't expecting to be killed and brought back to life by the side plot stupid-evil Alliance rogue scientists, which then would turn out to be a well known terrorist group, to fight some giant bees.
