Would anyone want to see the elements of Transhumanism touched upon in Mass Effect: Andromeda?

Hell yes. I mean, sure whatever. Who even cares anymore.

Cyborgs are pretty cool.

So you don't want to play the previous games?

I meant that I didn't want to see Mass Effect become a game primarily about Transhumanism. Star Trek shouldn't try to become Blade Runner. Mass Effect shouldn't try to become Deus Ex. It isn't in a genre (space opera) equipped to really tackle the issues in a deep enough way. And, if anything, Mass Effect is anti-transhumanist (what happens to people who get reaper upgrades?)

Just an offhand note: Ray Kurzweil, the futurist who predicted the internet, thinks that implanting the human body with technology is pretty likely to come into common practice. This century in fact.

There is a difference between tech implants and real, bona fide Transhumanism. Unless you argue that any tech implanted which improves our quality of life is transhumanist. In that regards, transhumanism already exists with hearing aids and prosthetics.

Besides, predicting the future is very difficult, and almost nobody gets it right. I'd be surprised if any one person predicted more than one huge technological advancement which became a huge part of our daily lives the same way the internet has.

Well, Kurzweil also predicted tablets and e-books would appear by 2009. He also thinks artificial general intelligence will be here by 2029.

To answer the OP: No, not because I don't like transhumanism, but because I don't see Mass Effect as the place or game to explore such a deep and convoluted topic. Deus Ex is enough.

You're thinking of Darth Vader, not Shepard.

Technically those things came earlier... MS especially seems to be good at showcasing this stuff before others. They don't market it well though.

They're actually pimping a lot of new AI stuff recently too. I get the feeling they'll be passed by again, as far as ushering it in on a wider scale.

Only if Bioware gets writers who are actually knowledgeable about the subject, because their attempts to cover it in the original trilogy had me facepalming throughout. Biowares failed attempt at covering Transhumanism is why I'm extremely worried about the possibility of the ME:A plot being about Colonialism, because Bioware writers tend to be very hamfisted with these sort of subjects so its best that they avoid them.

No. This is not Deus Ex. And even then, the theme isn't all that deftly handled. Mass Effect is more geared towards culural clashes, what is acceptable to obtain victory, and the like. Even the synth v organic sub theme was less about transhumanism and more about if two rather alien "cultures" could co exist. Transumanism was only thrown in as a cheap contrivance to give a pointless character any kind of meaning without actually following the story of the trilogy.

Transhumanism in a frontier exploration story? It could be done, but not by BioWare.

Talking about Transhumanism and Deus Ex, the Deus Ex guys are hosting a conference on the 3rd of August which will bring together Cyborgs, Academics, Philosophers and Scientists to discuss the future of human augmentation. You can check out a couple of links below:

As a member of Humanity + (an International Transhumanist association) myself, I'm looking forward to this conference. As the topic of human augmentation begins to reach the mainstream, its important that we try and set out a unified stance on how to proceed.

Anyone who is looking for a simple introduction to Transhumanism can check out this video from the British Institute of Posthuman Studies
