So I made the mistake of making a 2hander warrior inquisitor when I find I prefer to control mage or hunter. Was fine until level 15, but now my inquisitor goes splat as soon as any enemy looks at him. Clearly I'm doing something wrong, just can't figure out what

What are your skills? Make sure you use some of the Vanguard skills that give you guard.

Like Livid, or War Cry

Maybe even craft some armor with Guard on Hit (Fade-Touched Silverite) if that isn't enough.

Edit: Also what specialization did you choose?

Inquisitor is my melee dps, with full 2h talent tree and working on templar tree. Thought maybe he was stealing aggro off tank and respecced both. No difference

Who is your tank and why aren't they having the same problem?

You should at least respec and make sure you have these five points in Battlemaster (or the tank should, actually better on AI controlled character): Grappling Chain, Crippling Blows, Coup de Grace, Horn of Valor, Fortifying Blast. Spam Horn of Valor whenever it is off cooldown and everyone in the party will have guard on hit. If you put it on the AI controlled warrior, set it to Preferred.

BTW, did you add any gear that says "Berserk" or "Reaver"? That might be the problem.

For a Templar, make sure you have Wrath of Heaven + Embrace the light and Spell Purge + Spell Shatter. When you are close to a mob of enemies do Wrath of Heaven first, and while they are Stunned, do Spell Purge. Watch the big yellow damage numbers fly.

You might have to cut back on the 2H tree and use those points in Battlemaster, Vanguard or Templar. For 2H, keep Mighty Blow and it's upgrade, and everything down through Pommel Strike + Lightning Jab. You can skip the rest until you are level 20+. Flow of Battle is critical, though, and you should be gearing to improve your critical chance some.

You definitely need some guard giving skills from the Vanguard tree, they make surviving so much easier. (I fully recommend upgraded Livid)

Here an example from my then Lvl 13 2H Reaver

I know going full attack is what everyone wants, but you need to make sure you can handle the attacks that hit you, because you are a close range fighter.

Edit: And what PapaCharlie9 said  :)

Make sure your tank (probably Blackwall) has Warcry with armor upgrade set to preferred.  If you have Trespasser skill toggles, make sure the tank also has Horn of Valor(+party guard) upgrade set to preferred.  Depending on your tanks class and if you have Trespasser DLC or not, you can either get Challenge, To the Death(Champion), or Payback Strike(with taunt toggle) and set to preferred too.  Your tank must be getting aggro most of the time!

For you, I would be sure to get Wrath of Heaven with stun upgrade and Spell Purge.  Ignore Blessed Blades.  Get a good crit 2H axe and get the crit cooldown reduction passive in the 2H tree.  Use Charging Bull (with upgrade) to make your Wrath of Heaven free.  Not a bad idea to get Livid too.

You have two primary attack plans.  For both plans, you want to send your tank in first to battle.

Plan 1:  Use Grappling Chain(+give them the boot) to pull a ranged to you (like an archer) and then mighty blow, etc.

Plan 2:  Charge in (charging bull) to the group and Wrath of Heaven and then Spell Purge.   Any survivors, whirlwind or Livid.

I solo'd 2H, albeit without trials (since I don't have the dlc).

Your options are basically buffing guard, getting heal on kill / heal over time (enchantments or Reaver), and or getting the damage reduction from either stats, armor mods, or SnS tree.  You have some flexibility, don't really need to get everything together, as devoting everything to defense stats / talents will start dropping damage.  As far as enchants / stats for armor I would prefer magic, elemental or ranged defense over melee defense, as you have a lot of ways to avoid melee damage, but not as much to avoid the other types.  Wraith hordes were probably the most irritating enemy composition to fight with this class.  If you have a support mage or tank, buffing Willpower can do double duty as attack and magic defense buff.

Charging Bull is pretty good for mobility, guard, stamina management, and knockdowns.  It is not quite as good at damage avoidance as Combat Roll, especially against certain types of enemies (enemy 2H mostly), but it is competent against many enemies.

Grappling Chain suggestions above are good, it is very useful (and is on the way to other things you want anyway).  Enemy ranged units are more of a nuisance than their melee to this character, and any help you can get there is nice.

Cassandra is tanking, inquisitor as melee dps, then sera as hunter and solas as mage. And playing on ps so pc screenshots won't do much good ;) Thought initially it was because inquisitor forgot to put his chest armor back on after upgrades, but putting it on again didn't really do all that much. Very good suggestions guys, will investigate further. Altho 3 manning the western approach dragon wasn't too hard :)

If you post all the abilities of Cass and your IQ, we can probably figure out what is going wrong. Gear also. I still suspect a Berserker FT Masterwork on your IQ.

i played a two-hander to level 27. Just load up on the skills and gear that give guard above all else and really take note of what all the skills adn talents do. Don't waste time mashing buttons, think if i use this, then that procs this skill. Wait for that to proc use this.

Get the grappling hook, and then buff it so you are further away from the main mobs and you have one guy booted and down before all the rest hit you.

guard drops so keep your eye on it and refresh those skills that build it. just get in there and bash :D

Repeating for visibility. Check the armor descriptions. When the problem is sudden, it's either hitting a level spike area on the map... or wearing Berserk armor.
