I'm not really good at these 'favorite' questions, but I generally preferred the female companions in the DA series. They're just better written IMHO. Dorian is the only male companion I felt was really likeable.

There are only... 3(4, if Tallis counts) companions throughout all of DA that I don't care for while I love the rest. Even so, most of the time the companions I like end up being perfect matches for me combat-wise. (Although, liking them is probably why I get better with them, and vice versa. ;)) So there's not much of a difference between fun and tactics. But anyway:

DAO: Alistair, Lelianna, Wynne, Oghren and Dog -- Zevran/Shale are the only ones I'd like to use for fun without fear of dying, because we don't work well together at all. :(

DAA: Anders, Justice, Nathaniel and Oghren

DA2: Anders (surprise), Carver, Aveline, and Varric

DAI: Dorian, Cole, Solas -- favs, but I'd love to use any companions except Sera and Vivienne -_- (would've loved to have Cullen as a companion. ;))

Didn't think about it in terms of combinations, because that would lead to me overthinking. ...And I just realized the first name listed in every game are favored romances. I'm so transparent and sentimental. I'm not sure I should "gush" about my choices...

DAO-

You know, I don't think any of the party ever really 'clicked' with me. Shale was the most amusing, and I suppose Wynn had the most respect, but beyond that? Sten, I guess. The rest variously annoyed me (Oghren), exasperated me, or I never felt much comraderie. It was never a group that really synched together- more like a bunch of individuals rather than a cast.

DA2-

This one's hard, because the character conflicts honestly made them all interesting, but after the first playthrough I just ended up meta-gaming the party for approval/disapproval reasons.

Varric was the most common, but really only because he was my go-to lock-picker. I enjoyed that he got along with everyone, even if I didn't always enjoy the canon-bromance. Past that... I actually enjoyed Sebastian, and my favorite partner for Sebastian was Fenris. It was like the other friend Fenris really needed, since the point about starting to attend Chantry services was a much appreciated piece of healing.

DAI-

Less a trio and more of a duo of Cassandra, Vivienne, and anyone else. Cassandra is my favorite companion character of Bioware- and probably the one I can most respect- while Vivienne was someone I enjoyed watching spar with anyone else. Third party-member was usually zone or mission specified, but those two ladies were my constants.

DAO:

Oghren: I cannot go without him after he became my companion

Alistair: Because it feels strange to leave out the only other Warden off of the group. Also, my canon Tabris used him as a human shield.

Sten, because my Tabris respects him a lot.

Yeah, is a no mage party, because my Tabris was hardcore (?)

Optional:

Shale if I'm playing a mage Warden, cuz I headcanon my warden troll the golem every now and then. "Golem, kill that little bastard".

Zevran if I'm playing a non-rogue Warden, because my Wardens have penchant from petty thievery, and Zevran isn't as pious as Leliana.

DAO-A:

Oghren

Anders

Nathaniel

That was my main group in DAO-A. My Warden feel preference for them because they were her first companions (and Oghren her bro).Sometimes I switch Nathaniel with Sigrun, but only when  I want to hear Oghren-Sigrun banter.

DA2:

Varric: Hawke bro... seems, I have a penchant for making broships with dwarves.

Isabela:  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Fenris: Because some brutal warrior is needed for survival in a place like Kirkwall

And in act one, my lil' bro/sis.

DAI:

Dorian: My bro this time. Never pursued his romance, but he is my Inqui best friend.

The Iron Bull: A giant tug bodyguard, yeah.

Varric: My default rogue.

I went the route of more spirit on my play with through with trepidation. But then it turned out great. He was so thankful and he erased his own hurt. So I was like, man! I should do this every time, this is the best!

Then we had a chat in the ramparts. And he erased all of the Cole bits he'd taken on, equivalent, to me, of killing all it was that I had gotten to know that was "him." The Quiz says, "Cole?"

He says, all stone like..."yes... you can still call me that name... if you prefer..."

I was like, oh my god, I helped Cole suicide. Never again.

I also don't know if I'll revert exile the Wardens, even when the game punishes you with the dialogue option. Exiting them doesn't punish them, it punishes future Orlais. Also, hello. The Inquisition is not a country to be exiling organizations without discussing it with the Monarchy.

That's seriously disturbing. :o  It seems I made the right choice for once!

Yes, you're so right about the Wardens! It's not like they banish the problem completely anyway, you're just letting your neighbours deal with it instead. That's nice. And Orlais isn't that far away either. If they remain with the Inquisition, at least your order is good when dealing with these kinds of troubles, should they arise.

Whoah! Hold it there! This is way too rebellious!  :)

Alistair: Because it feels strange to leave out the only other Warden off of the group. Also, my canon Tabris used him as a human shield.

I alywas had him with me as well. I'm not the best when it comes to tactics, but Sten and Oghren always bit the dust when I had them as tanks.

Since I never worried about bumping up the difficulty (except Origins post-game), I never bothered tying myself down with optimizing the team mechanics. I picked who I liked most, and built around it.

Origins:

Leliana, Shale, Oghren, Sten, Wynne, and Dog (although my Ranger's Great Bear was pretty awesome too). I played Origins the most before settling on my canon playthrough (which I don't deviate from), so I experienced more characters fully. I no longer use mages, but I enjoyed Wynne while she around. I only use her now during the Circle mission, and to tease Alistair in Return to Ostagar. Despite Sten's horrible mistake, I like his otherwise calm and rational manner. Oghren can be bit overwhelming or trite at times, but towards the end of the game I swap him with Sten so I can field more dwarves. Shale is so blunt and aggressive, but quirky, and bonus points= (former) dwarf. Leliana is the love of the Warden's life. I actually like that her faith is strong, and that she has a complicated past. And that she is open to so many ideas and philosophies. She is very feminine, but it is great that it allows my exiled princess to openly express that part of herself too. And, Leliana kneels for dwarves!

Dishonorable mention to Alistair for throwing his tantrum when putting his revenge before his Grey Warden duties. And kissing one of my lesbians before sacrificing himself (just kidding. It was one of my earliest games where I didn't realize that not talking to some companions, but completing their quests and giving them plot gifts could trigger romances)

Awakenings:

Nathaniel...and Sigrun. I just love Nathaniel, and watching him transform into the awesome Warden Howe. I like Sigrun's pluck and charm, but the story seems to fly by so fast that I don't feel like I got to know most of them that well. I just like running around with three dwarves and the Howe.

DA 2:

Aveline, Merrill, Bethany, Varric, and Sebastian. I love strong female characters, so Aveline is one of my favorite companions ever. She is a great best friend to any type of Hawke. She is a rock, immovable, with so much strength, in both the literal and the figurative. But she still has her flaws and weaknesses, and insecurities. Aveline is my adopted sister. I know some are annoyed by Merrill, but I find her so charming in that...what's the term? Adorkable? It was a rivalry romance though, because, as protective of Merrill as Hawke is, he doesn't agree with Blood Magic or repairing cursed Eluvians. I suppose it's true that there wasn't much growth for Bethany, but I love having a family member on the team. The two of us get along swimmingly. Varric is witty and charming, but my Hawke doesn't negotiate, so they are rivals. I imagine Varric is more a friend to Aveline, Merrill, and Bethany, and Hawke just sort of puts up with him. Varric sort of grows on Hawke though, like moss on a rock. I swap in Sebastian every now and then. I don't mind if he seems a little preachy. I like that he tries very hard to find balance between his faith and family duties. I have special fun playing the quest Finding Nathaniel with three or four archers in the party.

I think the mage class breaks the story, so I don't have enough experience with Carver. I always give Isabela to the Arishok, and face Fenris on the field of battle (in the Gallows).

Inquisition:

I truly love all the warriors. So, I go with a rogueless party this time (good thing most locks can be bashed/smashed). Actually, I take that back. Once Blackwall's past is revealed, I give Varric a permanent slot. I find it amusing, but I think my witty Inquisitor and Varric are much better friends than Varric was with Hawke. I am impressed with Blackwall's efforts to try and live heroicly, doing good deeds, but I can't forgive his past, not fully, and I can't forgive him for playing the hero for so long, but not stepping up to take responsibility until nearly his entire former unit were executed. Cassandra is also great, but I love Aveline so much more, so she becomes overshadowed. I know it's petty, but Cassandra also loses points for not being available for female character romancing. Why no lesbian warriors? Still, I take her out for the novelty of a four-warrior party now and then. Vivienne (melee mage!) gets a permanent space on my squad. She even beats my romance out, by being in the party more often. I love her sass, her attitude, her clever machinations, her flair, her style, her confidence, and so on. I like putting her in heavy armor and having her blast people with a crafted Blade of Tidarion. And the Iron Bull! I find him amusing, and my gay dwarf finds him irresistible. Although, the Bull is certainly not for everyone... Honorable mention to Dorian. Too bad he wasn't a warrior! Kidding, again. I think he's great, but my party is pretty full, so I simply have to schedule times to take Dorian out and about Thedas (mostly personal questing, and replacing my Divine Vivienne).

I actually never recruit Sera. She isn't a good mix for my Andrastian dwarf who is trying to run a legimate organization. And once Vivienne and Solas inform me that Cole is a demon, I tell him to leave.

So, there you have it.

I look forward to gain more favorites in the next game.

That's a common misunderstanding. "Cole" is nothing more than a coping mechanism for his failure to save the boy.

He even points out that being a rogue and not a mage represents what the original person wanted. By making himself forget, he finally let go of the past.

Hmm!

DAO: Morrigan, Zevran and Dog. I suppose I'm shallow when picking faves- I like Morrigan because her character design is lovely, her voice is unique and beautiful and she's got an intriguing personality. Plus she's fun to romance. As for Zevran, he's exactly my weakness: flirty blondes //gets shot- And dog... I love dog and dog loves me. I will never leave dog.

DA2: Getting basic but: Fenris, Isabela and Anders. I love their dynamic together. Romanced Fenris in my first playthrough, his design is really really pleasing to my eyeballs. So is Isabela. And Anders. Man I'm shallow.

DAI: Finished this game countless times, so I love every companion with all my heart. But my top 3 would be Blackwall, Cole and Cassandra. Blackwall really grew on me after his romance path. He's a dad and I would let him hold me. 10/10 beard as well. Cole is my son whom I clearly remember giving birth to and I will protect him any time. And Cassandra.... She could punch me and I would thank her. Then again I would thank any fave who punches me. Cass could benchpress me AND my extensive elfroot collection.

Hahah! Awkward.  I got in a romance with Leliana not once, but twice. I still don't know what I did to this day to make it happen.

I think the mage class breaks the story, so I don't have enough experience with Carver. I always give Isabela to the Arishok, and face Fenris on the field of battle (in the Gallows).

I did feel a little weird from time to time running around in a city in fear of mages with my staff on full display.

I could never give Isabela to the Arishok when she just returned to do the right thing, that's harsh!  :P I know she stole the book thingy, but she's not the monster in this case. She's a thief, the Arishok is the murderer. She may have led him to it, but he's the one committing the crimes. Trying to press his lame religion or whatever on everyone else in the process.

I didn't know you could fight against Fenris in the last battle. I always support the mages, and he always helps. Is it a rivalry thing? I fought against Anders the one time I agreed to help Meredith fight the mages even though he wasn't a rival.

I know it's petty, but Cassandra also loses points for not being available for female character romancing. Why no lesbian warriors? I know how you feel, I wish my character could get together with Dorian. I only make women Inquisitors, so that's not gonna happen.

I'm nearing the end of the game now, and still I dislike Vivienne. I can understand people liking her style and her fighting skills, but she's cold, she's a snob, and she's got this awful tone when pretending to be all nice when she doesn't like you. She sort of reminds me of Umbridge from Harry Potter, and that was some major childhood trauma reading that book.  :P Umbridge is also always keen on following law and order strictly, she's always perfumed and smiling when being horrible to people, at the same time believing the world actually needs her. She's also ambitious as f*ck, and all for the sake of power alone. You can be a charming mean person or you can just be a mean person, and for me, Vivienne is the latter.

I always end up recruiting everyone no matter what my Inquisitor believes in. I had a religious Hawke who hated blood magic.. who apparently liked hanging around with demon lover Merrill. I'll just say to myself that she wanted to steer her on a better path or something.

Yes, very much looking forward to a whole bunch of new characters to hate and love. That's always fun.  ^_^

I just posted, and it looks a little long. Sorry for going on so much. Oh, well.

Don't worry about it, I love the long posts. I love to read peoples reasoning behind the choices. Very few of my friends are gamers, so I can't really discuss the game with too many people

 Someone who gets what's important here. Talking about shallow, I always end up wearing cool looking armor instead of better bad looking armor. Also, if my companions are wearing something that don't go together, (swords, shields, helmets..), it really hurts my eyes and I'm going to think about it a lot until it's changed.
