First off, I'm someone who always play games before sleeping. I would skip my gaming time if I'm too tired. But this game has been hypnotizing me with its quietness.

The current state of my game is still normally challenging and eventful. Frequent tough battles, beating side missions, gathering resources, selling items, crafting, and also snapping screenshots here and there. I'm still pretty active in the game.

I believe the lack of BGM in this game is the culprit of my sudden naps in the middle of the game. I'm not a fan of playing music externally while playing a game, apparently... so...

Anyway, has anyone doze off while playing this game?

I dont know if its a coincidence or if thats a Bioware thing.  I think the only BW games i've played are DAI and SWTOR and Baldurs Gate 2 in the 90's (dont know if BW had anything to do with those).  I've noticed that DAI and SWTOR are severely lacking in background music.  It will play for a while but then it will stop and it will be a long time before you hear it starting back up again.  One of my favorite things about WoW and Wildstar is the background music.  It can set the mood from soothing and relaxing to tense and action oriented (doesnt even have to be combat music).

With DAI and SWTOR i dont know if the lack of BGM is due to area tagging or if they just dont have BGM music to play.  With SWTOR i dont think thats the case because they have a lot of Star Wars music to choose from.  With DAI i've actually looked for ways to add BGM music in DAI Hinterlands like the Elwynn Forest music or Western Plaguelands music from WoW.  And for the desert areas in DAI the music from Westfall or Grizzly Hills.  And for Haven and Skyhold the old music from Darnassus.  If i could figure out how to change those that would be so cool lol.

The devs deliberately toned-down the duration of the "ambient music". It goes in-and-out on a fairly random basis.

If that isn't to your taste, you can always keep the OST running in a separate window!

If its deliberate...then why do that?

In the many games that i've played that has had continous BGM music playing i dont think i've ever seen anyone complain that the music is playing all the time.  Maybe complaints about the type of music or its style.  Like combat music playing when there is no combat, or tense music when it isnt a tense moment or listening to opera-type music when a player prefers rock and roll or something like that.  But i dont think i've ever seen someone saying that they would prefer silence.  On the other hand i have seen several threads in games namely SWTOR and now this one where people *did* comment about the silence.  One or two people saying the same thing isn't much, but is there some truth there?

A player in in the background is an option but it wont change to what is going on in the game like dedicated BGM systems.  Like if i want different types of music playing in Skyhold and Hinterlands i have to exit out and change it.

"sparingly to enhance the mood"

I dont know about anyone else, but using BGM too sparingly actually kills the mood for me.  In WoW there was an option to loop that BGM and i think that would be a nice feature to have here.  People can have that sparing BGM if thats what they want or if they simply dont care for it  And for the people who like it we have the option to loop.

I actually didnt know that Skyhold had no BGM, i just thought that it was another case of "sparing use of BGM".  But now that i sit here listening to just the ambient sound in Skyhold its like arghhh... let me put on some Stormwind music or something hehe.

I think they could work it like Fallout 4 instead. Their BGM aren't a heavy score like WoW example above or FF alike. Their BGM are very 'minimailistic' and fits the area we are in.

Honestly, I love hearing foot tapping while we run, wind sound, bird chirping, and such.

Areas as vibrant, colourful, big like Hinterlands keep my brain busy. Monotonous, crampy, less-saturated stages, with layering labyrinths like the desert, snowy mountains, cave are total killer. lol

I have fallen asleep once while playing. Tough few days at work made me completely exhausted. I was ready to crash but decided to open the last shard doors in Forbidden Oasis. I got as far as the intrinsic pool when I dozed off. It was so quiet and peaceful with the sound of the waterfall and ambient wildlife. I only wanted to stop for a moment to enjoy the scenery but ended up sleeping for about 30 mins.

I have found the reverse to be the problem. The sound track can be too intrusive, and the worst case is at the major battle between templars and mages early on in the hinterlands. I don't really need any music to see that I have a fight on my hands so it is just a distraction. The best music sets a mood without the player really being aware of it. Mind you, this is worse in the cinema where loud sounds usually cover a lack of inventiveness in the script.

And no, I never have fallen asleep, in spite of the fact that Origin's "Number of hours played" seems to be ten times to big. :)

It annoys me when BGM is playing constantly in open world games, especially if it's the same song. Guild Wars 2 did it perfectly, DAI was a bit sparse on the music for my taste, and TW3 annoyed me by playing the same song all the frickin time on each continent.

So i guess its a good thing that WoW made it an option to loop music.  And gave players the option to adjust volume sliders from max to zero.   And made sure to have separate sliders for ambient noise, dialogue, BGM, combat music etc etc.  So all the Beyonce fans and people who dont want it playing as much can adjust sliders as much as they want.

Its pretty clear that there are people who find it too intrusive if it plays all the time.  And there are some people who start to think it gets way too quiet if it doesnt play enough. Sliders and other options would be able to satisfy both groups of people.

Do any of those sliders affect frequency? Because that's my main worry. TW3's background music is really good. It just gets old after you've been hearing it for an hour straight. I don't want an option to turn it off nor do I want to listen to extra-game music. I'd like what I believe GW2's system is, which is that after a period of idle time (idle as in, not in combat or interacting with something in the world) a short loop of music begins playing. It's perfect because those are the times you'd want ambient music, when you're cresting a big hill or going through caves, for example.

In other games that i've played you have the regular frequency and clicking the loop option just means it plays nonstop. I dont know if there are games out there that have done anything in between those, but if there is i havent played them or heard of them.
