First, if I am posting this question in the wrong area of the forum, I am sorry. I have asked around about this topic, and unfortunately I have gotten all different answers when I ask: With Dragon Age Origins (for the PS3), I have downloaded all the downloadable content that came with the game, but when I found out how many side quests (DLC) that are involved, I asked around about when exactly I should play those side quests? Like I said, I have asked about this with friends, online forums, etc and got answers that were all over the place! I don't know which story to follow... when to play the DLC files – before the game, during the game, after the game, etc. It's hard to know who is right!! Can anyone help me?

Most of the DLC is integrated into the main game, so you have to do it during (i.e., before you travel to Redcliffe after the Landsmeet). I'll cover that first, then the stuff that's not.

The Stone Prisoner: This involves recruiting a companion and then, eventually, doing her companion quest. The recruitment you can do anytime after leaving the village of Lothering, but the quest is scaled for level 8-ish. The companion quest, you have to do much later, because it doesn't trigger until after completing one of the harder main story quests.

Warden's Keep: This adds a sidequest to the main game. You can acquire the sidequest by talking to Levi Dryden at the party camp. It's scaled for around level 10.

Return to Ostagar: Adds another sidequest that can be acquired anytime after Lothering. Also scaled for around level 10.

Feastday Gifts/Pranks: Adds some companion gifts to Bodahn's store in the party camp. No quests, just some fun breaking the approval system.

Okay, now for the stand-alone stuff:

Awakening: Set after the main game, should definitely be played after the main game. If your character survives the final battle, you can import them into Awakening, or you can create a new character.

The Golems of Amgarrak: Can be played anytime after the main game, but should be done after Awakening, with a character imported from Awakening, because you are going to need those extra levels.

Witch Hunt: Play after Awakening and Golems, ideally with a character who has been imported through the main game, Awakening, and Golems, because the end-game save from Witch Hunt is probably what you want to use for Dragon Age II importing.

Leliana's Song: This is a prequel to the main game, giving the backstory of one of the companions. Play it whenever you like.

The Darkspawn Chronicles: This lets you play the final battle of the main game as one of the enemy. Play it whenever you like.

I normally do the Stone Prisoner right after Lothering, and Warden's Keep right after that. I save Return to Ostegar until the Warden and party are 18th+.

Other than these, I agree with the poster above.

Side thought... I am to understand from a previous reply to this thread that there is DLC that are to be played "anytime after the main game" - how can it be "anytime" after the main game? Wouldn't it be just "after the main game is completed"?I don't understand.

I forgot to mention... I am playing this version of the game..... "Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition" -- Captain Wiseass had made a list of downloadable content for the game and when to play them... Is his list of DLC complete? For some reason I thought there were more DLC quests than the ones he listed in his reply.

I would play some of that additional DLC after DAA with your first character to unlock rewards, but not all will be as fun for replays.

I had asked about when I should play the downloadable content for Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition, and Captain Wiseass posted a great list of the DLC - and I thank him for that - but one DLC was obmitted from the list... a question for Captain Wiseass... when should I do the "Blood Dragon Armor" DLC? After this small question, I think I might be ready to actually start playing the game! Thanks so much!

Blood Dragon armor is simply armor added into DAO; some must be purchased. Guess you can begin now :)

I play them in order of release. If that... I've come to not even playing Amgarrak and Witch Hunt, but one should at least play them once (they come after DAA btw). It doesn't really matter when you play Leli's song or Darkspawn Chronicles, but it might not hurt to play at least Leliana's Song first.. you get some snazzy armor for her (or yourself if you wish).

Save Leli's Song until after you do her personal quest in the main game. The reward armor is really good, but it also spoils her whole arc if you haven't played before.

Likewise, Darkspawn Chronicles won't have any impact if you haven't finished a game. Save it until you beat Origins.

I like to do Stone Prisoner and Warden's Keep immediately after Lothering (when the world map opens up) for the party member and storage space, but if you haven't played before that might be too rough at that level. Try them after doing one of the Main Story Quests.

Return to Ostagar can also be done anytime, but story-wise it makes more sense to do it around the middle of the game, after two Main Quests. Unless you're an archer, because there's some essential gloves for an archer in there, screw the story.

I totally agree with Helios: one can (and should) do TSP  and WK  fairly early on, and then RtO  a bit later during the main DAO story.

From there, it's basically "as released".  So, Awakening, GoA, and WH, in that order, with LS  whenever one wants (although that Rogue armour reward does rock!) and "The DLC Which Must Not Be Named"  can go sit on the shelf as far as I'm concerned.  ;)

Why? I played it after Origins, and had no option to import it to Awakening, I believed it wasn't meant to be imported. Can I use its save to import to DA2?

Well, I know its end... I will just play it again importing from Awakening...

Lore related, at least until where I got in Awakening, I don't see my char going look for her only after Awakening. After all those things that happened on the end of Origins, and having romanced her, he had to go after her ASAP...

Some extra explanation. Some DLÇ add extra areas and quests to Origins campain, some DLÇ add new campains.

New campains, when marked as finished on your profile, add powerful gear to any playthrou of Origins and Awakening, you just need to load a save or create a new playthrou and the gear will be in your inventory. Some of these gear require strenght or dextertry and a lvl1 char won't be able to equip them.

DLÇ that add extra content to Origins will have powerful gear to be looted.

Blood Dragon Armor just adds some gear directly into Origins and Awakening, there's no need to do any quest or campain, they are bought from the dwarf merchant.

One important thing to consider when choosing when to play DLÇs is that, again, they give powerful gear to any playthrou of Origins and Awakening. As longer you deplay playing them, the longer you play main campains without those gear. I suggest playing them as soon as lore allows. For DLÇ that should be played after Origins, you'll need to create a new char and play it again (totally worth it) to use those gear.

Side thought... I am to understand from a previous reply to this thread that there is DLC that are to be played "anytime after the main game" - how can it be "anytime" after the main game? Wouldn't it be just "after the main game is completed"?I don't understand.

These are campains, not added content to Origins. He meant "anytime after the main game" refering to lore, suggesting to finish Origins first once to then play them, just after finishing Origins, or parallel to Awakening, or after Awakening.

Yes, as long as I can tell it's complete, all extra quests and campains are listed there. I also have Ultimate Edition, and when I activated it on my EA account I even received Blood Dragon Armor for DA2!

Some side notes on some DLÇ:

Leliana's Song: she's a companion, this campain tells her story before she meets the Warden. It's better to only play it and learn her past after having known her in present.

The Darkspawn Chronicles: it has an alternate version of Origin's ending. It's optimal to only play it after finishing Origins, but I didn't know that and played before. It's not a spoiler, I didn't lose anything from Origin's ending, so it's not a problem IMO. It shows first-hand how darkspawn classes are and helps understand them, so it was a plus for me. But it shows all Origin's companions, so I highly suggest not playing it before knowing all of them, which thankfully I had already known when I did.
