...competing with the companions for the killing blow.

Here you are, battling the strongest enemy in that room. You can almost taste that juicy 167xp, but when you're almost defeating the fiend, a magic bolt out of nowhere kills it.

Then you look back and realize Morrigan got those xp points and not you.

To add insult to injury, the party accomplishments list says she was the one that defeated the creature despite the fact that you did most of the work.

I always make my party members take some of the boss kills for themselves so they all have some unique kill in their hero accomplishments. After all you can only have one yourself.

Glory for everyone!

I think in my latest playthrough they went something like this:

Shale: Kolgrim

Wynne: Uldred

Leliana: Marjolaine

Zevran: Zathrian

Loghain: That Undead Ogre from Ostagar

Sten: Caridin

Morrigan: High Dragon

Alistair: Flemeth

Oghren: Broodmother

And for my M!Cousland first Arl Howe of course and then the Archdemon.

In DAO, the fix is simple: After all the defensive commands place one line in Tactics that says 'Enemy > Any > Wait' before any other attacks.

Many have played the game solo, though I prefer to have a team along for the dialogue. Still, the above line has allowed for 99%+ Kill stats for a few of these solo Wardens.

I thought the XP points for killing an enemy goes to everyone in the team as long as they are with the warden. Is that not the case? The amount of damage you've done to the creature is still credited to you in your contribution to the party damage. On the last round, every major kill went to Zevran - High dragon, broodmother, Flemeth, Javia, Kongrim, Whitfang. The warden only got Uldred until he finally landed a killing blow to Gaxkang. Then Zevran landed the killing blow to the archdemon and got the animation before the mandatory killing animation with 2H weapon by the warden. This round, with a rogue warden, Zev got the high dragon, but the warden got the broodmother. And I'm happy whichever way it happens as long as I get the animation.

^ Close.  From the wiki:

Experience distribution is full on-screen amount for the character doing the action (killing an enemy, picking a lock, etc.) and 2 experience points less for every other party member. For example, let's say the main character kills a genlock and the experience point gain shown on-screen is 33 XP. That character will have 33 points added to their total and each other party member will get 31 points added.

It kind of makes it like a group of real people with their petty competitions! lol  Morrigan is, of course, the ultimate "kill thief"!  For me, it occurs not so much for my PC, but for some companion I take pity on because their stats are so paltry.  I then spend time trying to beef up their kills only to have credit stolen at the last second by one of the other party members.

I usually remedy this by using the command to stand still, but the party's mages are the only ones that won't obey.

Camp donations make it a non issue, as all the companions can get that kill and your PC can still reach level 25 max thru donations.

It never really bothered me. I get xp regardless and since I rotate my party I end up higher leveled than them anyway

Lol, I admit that sometimes this bugs me too. I was not about to let any of these jokers take that Sacred Ashes High Dragon kill from me, because that thing was a pain to take down. Easily the worst kill-steeler, I found, was Sigrun. Like, what the hell dwarf? Y u gotta ax all my targets first?
