I sorta do the same thing.
For the overall I'm 23 of 25 with just my map mastery and stupid over cover grab holding me up. Nowadays I like to use characters, weapons or powers that might have a zero next to them.

What is that, may I ask? A zero next to a character and such. I have kind of fallen in love with my Turian Sentinel. I am getting good at using him. Although, there is always room for improvement. Some of the characters that I would like to try I can't get unlocked; like the Asari Huntress, for example.
Well, if you really have to ask.......
also, there is no better feeling in this game..then having a platinum game fail on wave 8, then somebody hops on their mic to berate you for not carrying the team because you have such a high N7 & Challenge Point total. ![]()

He's referring to using characters he hasn't used before. The challenge points system allows him to see where he hasn't earned any points at all, whether it be with a certain weapon or waves/extractions with certain characters.
You'll unlock all the rares eventually - it's the ultra rares that don't come quickly enough. (Unless of course you cheat - which some refuse to do.)
Your N7 HQ will tell you how many points you have earned for each silver challenge, say "play 200 waves with the Turian Havok" and if you have played zero it will show 0/200. "Earn 140000 points with the Shuriken 135/140000" etc. What is that, may I ask? A zero next to a character and such. I have kind of fallen in love with my Turian Sentinel. Oh just that I haven't completed it yet with a particular character or weapon etc.
Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer has been out for quite some time now and I am curious to know if doing any of the Challenges actually mean anything anymore; or, is it just a waste of time? I do play the single still and I am currently promoting my Avatar(s)….especially my Turian Sentinel; (1.) achieve the N7 Mastery of 60 promotions; (2.) because it adds seventy-five N7’s, with every promotion, to the War Assets of the Alliance. And, not that the latter means much either since I have the “Happy Ending” mod installed.
Having said that I believe it is just a matter of seeking achievements, because what else is there in the multiplayer game? Obviously you get better at playing the game the more that you play, but it is still a rinse and repeat kind of game. Now don’t get me wrong, because I thoroughly enjoying the game?!? And, I do strive to get better at it. Still, I am curious as to what others think and why they still play the game???
It was fun to do the challenges and get the banners and it provided an incentive to try out new combinations. As such, I think it was a great way to nudge me towards exploring all the variety in the game, which I now view as one of its strong points and a reason for its lasting appeal.
Why do I still play after all this time ? One main reason is probably that I have some old RL friends I play with and we use the voice chat in place of phone calls as I have been working away from my home town for some time now. Another thing is that a few rounds of ME3MP is a great way for me to purge my brain from all the potential stressful little background thoughts that accumulate during a work week. Similar to the function that watching TV (which I don´t enjoy) has for some people.

I should feel fortunate as I am retired and single. (At 69 I love playing video games. Didn't have this stuff when I was kid.) So, I can play all day long if it suits me. Add to that, I don't own a TV nor do I watch it on my computer w/Xfinity.
I love my Turian Sentinel, as I stated before. I have played with him a lot....steadily over the past couple of weeks. Today however, I have decided to try again try the N7 Destroyer. Trying to get a feel for the right build as I have trouble with melee. I tend to rely more upon my weapon.... perhaps more than I should, so even at close range I forget to melee. Add to that, I have re-keyed my melee button to "E" on my keyboard. Having it close at hand...or fingertip!?! Still, I forget to use it.
This morning while I was sipping my first cup of coffee, I started to play a game on Bronze and lo and be hold the only one other person was playing, a friend. I didn't realize it at first until he shot me a few times.
It made my day and the two of succeeded in reaching the end of the extraction wave. So, for me it isn't just about the challenges, but fighting along side of friends.
On the negative side is my innate ability to get caught in a situation where I am practically toe-to-to with a Banchee fighting for dear life and sometimes dying because of it. But, even as far back as when I played Battlefield 2142 I was always aggressive in that way. It didn't matter if I died if I saved the team.

Are you having fun by completing them challenges?
Are you becoming a better player by completing them challenges, because they force you out of your comfort zone?
Do you want them spiffy banners?
If answer to any/all of those questions is "yes", then my answer is also "yes".
Otherwise, the answer is "no".
Doing challenges solely for the points may not be the most rewarding experience...
Then when I had done as much as I could (still missing plat solo, sigh) I had a pretty good pile of points and my new goal became to reach top 10 in my country or top 100 globally. Sadly, I may never reach these goals, especially as I don't play as often any more, but it's still motivating.
If you moved you could be top 10 in your (new) country. Wouldn't help with the global top 100, of course. I'm sure that's a realistic solution, right?
When the challenge points system was implemented it was a breath of fresh life into this game for me, and I played for points for a while even though they never had any real meaning (they were something new to strive for, and banners were/are cool-ish). There are, however, some minor challenges that I'll likely never complete (Talon waves, no thank you).
Now I just play what I want because I can and I enjoy it, which is not very conducive to getting CP (I tend to play vanilla humans more). One of the biggest draws, as the OP has noted, is running into friends and/or familiar faces in PuGs and the sense of community from playing the same game for years. And maybe also dragging hapless players to extraction.
Where they ever? The goal is to keep N7 and challenge low so PUGs don't think you'll just carry them.
They'll find out soon enough.
Today I let my Turian Sentinel rest and tried the N7 Destroyer, but it didn't work out to well for me, so I tried the Batarian Soldier and that was pure hell for me. ( I couldn't keep him alive to save my butt.) I wasn't impressed at all. Finally, I decided to try the Asari Adept one more time. I played several games and found that I was doing rather well with her, for a relative Noobie-- that is. At least no one had to carry me, like when I was playing as the Batarian Soldier. Thus, I think I am going to stick with the Asari for a few days. Get to know her a little better. I did find however, that I wasn't using the bubble all that much. Instead I was casting Warp and Throw for combos.

You mean Stasis? Yeah I skip it.
Far as your progress with the Soldiers, take em out again. Don't shy away when you don't have immediate success. Maybe change your build around or use a Cyclonic if you're having trouble staying alive, but both of them have great potential.
Doing challenges solely for the points may not be the most rewarding experience, but being forced to use kits and guns you don't immediately love can open your eyes to whole new ways to play. (Except for the raptor, there is no upside to that gun, IMO)
I would have agreed with you for a long time about the Raptor, but then I used it to complete one of the challenges in Alien Mastery.
I put that gun on the Geth Infiltrator with the High-Velocity Barrel V, Sniper Rifle Amp 5. Plus the Sniper Rail Amp 3 and Phasic Ammo Consumables.
It ripped apart everything, even Atlases, in just two clips on Gold. (just keep your distance from enemies, I guess).
It is a great gun for head-shot practice. But yeah, the downside is you have to want to use your trigger finger a lot...like with the Mattock.
Also, I started this game hating Sniper Rifles and never used them. But now I really like them, especially after unlocking the Widow, Black Widow, and Javelin.
I wish challenge points actually represented the number of times you've been insta-killed throughout the years of playing this game.

Stasis is like the single best power for dealing with phantoms, how could anyone skip it
I never thought of that. Still, the less buttons I have to push the better---for me at least. Half the time I forget to use the melee button or in my case the letter "E." I think I am going to have to invest in a newer tougher keyboard though if I am going to continue to play. ![]()

Easy, I put the points in the other 4 powers.
I just never used it so I skipped it, but I acknowledge its usefulness.
