It's no secret that BioWare's reputation has been on a downward trajectory. Dragon Age 2, while ambitious, was kind of a disaster thanks to EA rushing it out the door. ME3 was obviously a problem. And Inquisition was pretty much an empty box, devoid of quality content.
Now that gamers have access to multiple high-quality AAA RPGs this gen, with even more on the way, is it enough for BioWare to come to the table with a game that's just pretty good? Will enough consumers respond if BioWare puts out a game that isn't as good as their competitor's offerings? Will a 7/10 game salvage the Mass Effect franchise and keep BioWare on the radar of gamers?

Nice post dude.

This is Mass Effect.

It has to bang in every way possible and I'm not joking here. This needs to be something special, unless Bio are happy being another mediocre company, producing generic games.

Other companies aren't happy to be that guy though and they'll quickly bring people over to more imaginative creations.

I didn't like the Witcher but if Bio cant at least match what CDPR did with that, they might as well give up.

Inquisition was fun but that model is clearly last decade and a Mass Effect game built similarly would have no soul.

If 10/10 is perfect then I'd settle for an 8.5-9/10

For me?

GREATNESS!

or at least: Pretty damned close to it!

They have to make a game I'll proudly put on the shelf (yes: I am old-fashioned, I still buy disks most of the time - don't like digital-downloads much!) next to Mass Effect 1 and 2 and Dragon Age: Origins (and not hide away ashamed of having bought it like: Mass Effect 3))...otherwise I will only pick future games up when there's a sale :(

Note: I don't want that, I want them to teach all us nay-sayers that they've still got the chops - thing is: They didn't lately (the last 3 games were half-decent to lackluster, but nothing to remember for years (ME3 being lackluster - I still feel cheated/swindled/lied to - and the others being half-decent...Dragon Age 2 did have its moments, but it was not something to brag about and Dragon Age: Inquisition had too many flaws and only did shine on a very very few occasions...not to mention that they put the real ENDING in a DLC, that's - almost - worse than the ME3-Endings!)), that's why greatness is sorely needed (it will put them back on the track if they get fan-praise instead of a fan-outrage including ****-storms!) and a half-arsed effort is not going to cut it!

ps: I truly hope that the GTA-Virtual-Rape girl and that diversity guy don't have too much influence (note: I am not against diversity and all that, but certain people who damaged the industry with their BS have NO RIGHT to work in the industry and get some of my money!) on the game...same for prudes (it's time to drop the damned underwear love-scenes and don't do "tastefull" (crappy IMHO!) fade to black either!)

I don't really see Bioware with a negative reputation since DA2. I sunk over 1000 hours into ME3's multiplayer, more than any other game so I don't consider it bad by any stretch of the imagination. In SPer the overall plot and ending were disappointing but aside from that I think it hit all the right notes.

I actually liked DA2. It was rushed and shortcuts were taken, that was evident. But that was probably my favourite bunch of companions from any game. I had a lot of trouble with the last act, pieces of the story were badly written, but the previous writing and the DLC were brilliant imo. If that game had had another 6-12 months it could well have been my favourite Bioware game.

I didn't really like DAI but I don't like open world games. I was under the impression Inquisition was actually quite well received?

Pretty good would be good enough for me. Given the emphasis on exploration and an open world style I suspect I wont really enjoy the SPer part that much. But I am still hopeful it has a decent enough story with good combat and the MPer part is at least as good as ME3.

Considering Bioware's pretty good is most other devs best, I can live with pretty good. If we get Origins/ME2/Inquisition level tgen we are just being greedy for another game in the greatest of all time discussion.

I have yet to be disappoint by any Bioware game I've played, so they don't have that negative rep with me that so many on this board think they have.  I liked DAI, loved DA2/DAO. I loved ME1/ME3 and sort of liked ME2.

That said my benchmark is fairly low and I have spare time / income so its not like I need a game to be the most amazing thing ever to feel it is worth the money and time investment. Someone with a limited game budget or gameplay time might need a game to be extra good enough to justify the purchase, I just need it to be more fun than staring at a blank wall or doing taxes.

If Andromeda strives to be anything like ME1 and 2, then I think it'll be alright.

I feel like people sometimes imbue their opinion with greater value than what they actually spend to get a game. What Andromeda needs to do is make enough to justify further investment in the franchise, beyond that  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just want a game I enjoy playing, I expect I'll get that unless Bioware chooses to go in a radically new direction.

Old topic.

But, I agree that Bio must :

1. Hit the ball out of the park with this one.

2. Redeem itself to the "greater unwashed".

So, yes, recent triple AAA titles have raised the bar.  The "polishing" should also focus on a GUI that is simple and coveys the right amount of information to the player. Menu navigation to be absolutely less cumbersome than DA:I for gear upgrades. Plus, no freaking Shard / Bottle/ Portrait crapola fetch exercises. The game must have captivating quests.

And, what about the game itself? Well, it must grab your attention and keep it. You can't do that with bugs, poor frame rates, crashes, slooowww load times and the need to re-download digital copies from Origin. Oh, the game will come with Denuvo again (see DA:I) which ME3MP does not have.

At the end of the day, EA wants to see lots of sale numbers.... that's all it matters to them.

"Destiny", "Ascension" - it's time the Asari get to the top of the galactic food chain. Pinnacle of evolution. Total domination by subdueing lesser beings.

And the lesser beings will love it. Asari make best villains ever.

I'm cool with pretty good. If a game is pretty good, I'm guessing I got a positive experience out of it.

It's EA.  not BioWare.  That being the case, it's either 1) do well enough financially to warrant another investment in another game or 2) We never see another Mass Effect again.

For me, the downward trajectory in BioWare's reputation will not be reversed if ME:A is a quality game. The question is more related to brand equity and the "lovemark" concept. Lovemarked brands are those that inspire loyalty that goes beyond the power of reason and into the deeper emotions of "love". BioWare were a brand that scored highly on both axis of the Lovemark concept: their products were respected above their competition and the brand's story inspired a deeper emotional connection than other brands. But, those connections were challenged, first by the acquisition of the brand by a publisher with one of the lowest equity scores in its industry and a succession of products that failed to command the respect of  those produced in the previous incarnation of the brands legacy. These factors combined with the poorly executed ending and franchise management of the brand's flagship IP in 2012 to create a brand equity/identity crisis.

A brand equity or identity crisis is harder to recover from than a product failure. While a quality game may reclaim some of the equity lost in the past. The last generation of Mass Effect games was as much a failure of franchise management than a story or game related failure. I don't think one game will be enough for BioWare to reclaim the position it held before in the minds of their consumers.

even if ME A is the next standard for whatever. there will be million of post claiming that Witcher 3 is better, or Bioware did better on the past.

IIRC there have a been a few posters here who have pretty much already said that even before any of the trailers for ME:A dropped and there are some here that basically want BioWare to make ME:A as basically TW3 but set in space instead of a fantasy world.

I'm in the strange category of.... losing my faith in them because of DAI. Not ME3 or DA2. It's more like I'm disappointed with their response to the criticism of DA2. And MEA seems more of the same, in regards to ME3. I'd have preferred they stuck to their guns.

I don't think its a strange category to have lost a degree of faith in the brand due to DA:I. I was concentrating on other points prior to 2012 because I have simply read more about these concerns. My point really is that loyal consumers like yourself have had their equity challenged and have a reduced perception of the brand's identity as a result of these challenges.

How many of those were user driven awards though? Like Golden Joystick didn't award it.

Honest question.

Seeing as DA:I made Aliens Colonial Marines look good (Yeah, I went there!), ME:A has to pull a rabbit out of the hat in order to keep EAWare alive, otherwise.... well, you all know what happened to Pandemic Studios.

I'm not a DAI fan, but come on... Gearbox are just thieves. Bioware's better than that at least.

Not being a thief isn't "greatness" either though. :P
