I only recently realized how much the title "Riders on the Storm" applies. They confirmed more than one Ryder, and apparently the ship is called the Tempest. So it seems like they might already be setting a precedent for wordplay when it comes to names.

edit: I know the song in the early trailer was Ghost Riders in the Sky by Cash, and not Riders on the Storm by The Doors. I just still think this might be an intentional reference.

Shadow Broker is a silly name/title? What's silly is how wrong this is.

It's a bit odd that even Cerberus themselves stuck with the moniker "Illusive Man" for their boss. Wonder how those briefings started back when Miranda still worked for him.

"Hello, Miss Lawson."

"Good day, Illusive Man."

I believe it started out as a pejorative and was adopted. Like "Big Bang" was coined to ridicule the idea.

I guess Illusive Man sounds better than "Number 1".

Well, his employees don't even really know him. He practically is "elusive" even to allies.. It's a suitable name even for Miranda.

I thought it was meant to convey "Elusive", but "Illusive" was a joke word the Alliance used... to make him more sinister.

I could've sworn it was in the comics.

The Cash song is "Ghost Riders in the Sky". "Riders on the Storm" is a song by the Doors.

And I'll probably get mad **** for this, but I like the Doors a lot better than Johnny Cash.

Edit: I do wonder though if there is going to be some major Shakespearean themes from the Tempest in the story though. From wiki, as I am too lazy to summarize myself:

". It is set on a remote island, where the sorcerer Prospero, rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skilful manipulation. He conjures up a storm, the eponymous tempest, to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to the island. There, his machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio's lowly nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso's son, Ferdinand."

The themes of being marooned in a remote location, family rivalry, etc are all curiously similar.

I can't believe I missed that.

They should use both songs though. :D

I know. I'm a fan of both. I probably should have been more clear. I wasn't thinking of the trailer, just the references to Riders on the Storm that were circling the forums when we first caught sight of the name Ryder.

I wonder the same thing. It would help explain why they didn't continue the trend of naming human ships after earthly locations.

Funnily, Ghost Riders in the Sky is actually about the Wild Hunt myth... It probably suited the Witcher more than this.

It's just a wild west spin on it.

Shadow Broker.......Harbinger.....Sovereign.......Illusive Man.........what is this, Gotham? Or The X-Files? All we're missing is the Cigarette Man and the cheeseburger-munching Hamburglar.

Get serious plz.

This actually always made a lot of sense to me. For example, the reapers never gave their names, so the protheans named them for what they did and that was taken over by the races today. Sovereign and Harbinger were clearly "misunderstandings" if you will.

When we first meet Sovereign for example, he says "I am sovereign!" We learn later that his name was actually Nazana, so this was not a name, it was what he felt he was -> sovereign (probably introduced himself to Saren the same way and he took it up as a name).

Same with Harbinger: "I am the harbinger of your salvation through destruction".

So no, I have no problem with those kinds of names, as long as they are not used for something that would give itself its own name already (such as races and their home/colony planets). So far, I think ME did fine with the naming and it looks like they'll keep it up in this way ("Khet" is rumored to be the name of a reace that lives today -> can name and introduce itself, the "Remnant" is probably the name of an extinct race, the original name of which we don't know -> we use a descriptive name).

Andromeda could use names from Tolkien's novels, some of it are extremely dark and evil.

Ryder is all right. It sounds American, while at the same time being just generic enough to give your character any ethnicity you want.

How about they just stick with turn of the century names like Billiam, Edgar, Phineas, etc. Add a touch of 19th century class.

What's wrong with the names? And what do you want? Maybe the villain of Andromeda should be called John Cena.

It's rare to see a thread praising something that Bioware did. In fact, the majority are dumb threads like this complaining about stupid things that aren't a problem at all.

John Cena would wear down the explorers of Andromeda with phone calls.
