I would prefer a auto hide mini-map on the omni tool that could be bought up with a hot key/button.
That'd work.
IIRC, ME2 & ME3 would display a mini-map when I brought up the power wheel.
I just can't figure out a reason why I ever needed a map, other than ME1... but then, those worlds weren't that fun anyways. The other two were more narrative driven, corridor games..with levels that were easy to navigate.
The mini-maps also showed enemy locations with red dots, and made it easy to discern direction with a big old 'N' in the proper position. Some of the games I've played with only a compass for navigation - the compass was so cluttered with various icons, it was difficult to find the 'N' buried there somewhere.
I find it much easier to navigate via map than some cluttered compass. A compass will show you only direction; a map also shows distance.
And if they improve the world exploration in MEA, it wouldn't need a map either. A good exploration game is more discovery and stumbling on stuff. If it's the type of open world like DAI, then I don't need to be wasting time with it either.
Maps aren't always about marking locations beforehand. Sometimes they help chart progress through an area, help you find your way back to things you've already found, and are pretty much necessary for fast travel.
