In television, there is an established tradition of out-of-the-blue musical episodes. While these can be... A mite hit or miss, when they do hit, they tend to be some of the most memorable parts of the entire series. I'd be interested to see the idea applied to a game, and I can't think of any better developer than BioWare, with their love of quirk - and, particularly, dialogue-based quirk - to give it a go.

I mean, picture Garrus singing a musical number about headshotting mercs on Omega and calibrating cannons, and tell me this is a bad idea. Oh, and there could've been a 'No Shepard Without Vakarian' duet!

And at the end, the entire crew breaks into a rendition of, 'You'll never be better than Commander Shepard!' (Honestly, imagining what this might look like is kinda what gave me the idea.)

You'd have to replace all these references with something Andromeda-appropriate, obviously. And, in truth, this'd probably be something better saved for DLC or the second or third game, to give us time to get to know everyone first. But still... I dunno, I think it'd be cool.

I feel like I'm failing to grasp something crucial here.

An interactive musical. Everyone sings, and when it's Ryder's turn the dialogue wheel comes up and we choose their verse, and when the song is finished everyone is awkward and just goes about their business again as if it never happened.

I usually zone out when the music starts in films or musicals unless it's Disney, but in ME, I can get behind it.

Maybe a sing off in battle, with the villain or something! No no, I'm getting carried away. I need to go eat a tangerine, need to calm down.

Yes! This is exactly the thing!

Imagine if Shepard and the clone had battled through song rather than bullets! Or had a dance-off!

WE NEED A SPACE GUITAR DUEL UP IN HERE!

YES.

Our Andromedan enemies won't know what's hit them! Other than good music that is. Good music and literally killer riffs.

Musical numbers are so overdone at this point.

Maybe a drum off with the final boss to decide the face of the Galaxy. I can plug in my Rock Band drumkit and everything.

I think something like this would be more appropriate since the protagonist will be a soldier.

Rule #1 of Vidya Games: If a Saints Row game did it, it's probably a good idea.

This is my favorite suggestion I've seen this week.

I'm not even joking.

Hire John Dimaggio right now. His singing voice is amazing. He could be our antagonist or start the singoff.

Edit: I had no interest in Saint's Row before this forum, but I'm starting to feel oddly tempted after a few intriguing posts.

No, no and a thousand times no. Keep that crap for silly meme posts and videos after the game is released. Keep all fangasms away from the actual product. I want serious, cerebral scifi paired with a top notch action RPG system, no immersion breaking nonsense please.

Go for it! 3's my favourite, but 2 probably had the best actual open world. I'd say 1 can be safely skipped - it's very, very dated, and doesn't have nearly as much personality as 3 and 4 - but it's at least okay, if you feel like playing through the whole franchise.

I love that game, but I really don't need any of that in ME. Mordin's little song in ME2 is about all I could take.

I feel like this older post of mine from the 'How should Mass Effect: Andromeda begin?' thread is relevant to this topic:

The player determines:

1. Whether there's music.

2. Whether there's dancing.

3. The style of dancing.

4. Whether you sing along or not.

5. Whether to kick the rats(/shoot the gasbags)

Depending on class, you either jetpack across the chasm, do an acrobatic flip across the chasm, or biotic charge across the chasm.

It'll be a marvel.

...

I love that game, but I really don't need any of that in ME. Mordin's little song in ME2 is about all I could take.

Ah, meanwhile I wished there'd been more of Mordin's singing. Hell, I even liked* the Gilbert and Sullivan scene in Star Trek: Insurrection:

*And by liked I mean loved.

Depends on the party, but what does that have to do with the topic at hand? Having the characters burst out into a song and dance routine out of nowhere would ruin immersion in the game. The 'Dawn will Come' sing-a-long in DAI worked because it was thematic to the story, Mordin's singing was tolerable as a one off gag. Having musical numbers as an integral part of the game would be an incomprehensible design choice that would alienate at least 80% of the fanbase. It ain't happening.
