True, but if he was at Highever first, he may have missed the point at which the mage helps or exposes Jowan.

I always had it in my head that Duncan stops at each location, but which origin you play determines when he gets lucky with his timing and gets a new recruit.

So, he starts in Denerim since that's where the Warden base is, heads to Highever, then goes south to Orzammar and the Circle. The only one really out of the way is the Dalish but depending on his route back to Ostagar, he could detour near the Brecilian Forest, especially if he was tracking darkspawn like we see in the opening cutscene.

Is there a reason they wrote Duncan to force people into the wardens? Of course, my two play throughs, it felt more like he was saving my city elf and he was just a side act for my Cousland. Joining the Wardens just gave her the resources to go after her revenge and save Fereldan. So, I never saw him this way, but apparently he can come across this way very strongly.

To show players that the Grey Wardens can recruit whatever person they deem fit into their ranks, perhaps.

Actually the CE wanted to find the Dalish  not  become a Grey Warden. Duncan conscripted the CE instead..

The Brand Dwarf was caught and was facing another fight just to escape to the surface when Duncan intervened. Remember, the brand is a criminal and a opportunist and seen that was a way out of Orzammar.

Cousland could have escape to find his brother. Duncan blackmailed Bryce into agreeing to let young Cousland join the Grey in return for helping him/her escape.

The Dalish Elf didn't really want to leave the clan but,was force by Duncan's conscription  and his Keeper' being a witness to that conscripting..

The Noble dwarf was more then willing to join just to escape the Deep Roads and to seek vengeance.

You can find all that fun stuff if you resist joining the Grey.

My warden of choice is the CE or the Brand.  My choice of Inquisitor is either a Elf or of late a hume.

Ashely never once believed she was the Herald but, she is kind hearted and will go out of the way to help including pretending to be the Herald after the truth is revealed.. "People needs hope".  Ashely is a mage and therefore disowned by her Noble family.

Wes on the other hand fully believes he is not the Herald and will do whatever it takes to get the job done..He hates his family especially his father. His life revolved around his lovely wife and their daughter and in order to save the family's good name and reputation Wes's father hired Crow assassins to kill his daughter in law and granddaughter.. He hated the very thought of his son marrying a commoner that was no better then any of his Elvan servants.

Wes hunted down and killed the assassins and learned of his father's treachery.

The City Elf doesn't have any chance of surviving without Duncan help. IIRC, s/he mention other stuff also, like go to hiding or fleeing Denerim. But, really, have s/he had really a chance to escape the city guard without the help of Duncan?

Same with the Casteless Dwarf or the Dalish Elf. In the case of the Dalish Elf, I remember Duncan first offers the "cure" freely, and even the Keeper says that the Dalish have this agreement to help the Grey Wardens in time of blights. Only if the Dalish Elf refuses many times the offer is that Duncan uses the Right of Conscription (that IMHO is stupid. Why do you want to back down an offer of cure you of the Taint?). Same with the Circle Mage.

My Mahariel was stubborn as a mule and wanted to stay and search for Tamlen. I headcanon'd that her identity was so wrapped up in Being Dalish™ that she couldn't even fathom life among humans as a Grey Warden and would prefer death, so Duncan had to drag her kicking and screaming away from her clan.

Not very logical, but the Taint addles the mind and she was pretty grief-stricken.

He also conscripts Daveth in Denerim. Though it seems like at different times if Daveth doesn't know the City Elf. Maybe he sent Daveth to Ostagar with Alistair and then visited the alienage himself?

Possible. It's not like everything happened in a couple of days. First, Duncan had to realize what was going on, then go to Denerim and convince Cailan. Then the latter had to raise an army and march to Ostagar. The army then fights several skirmishes/battles before HoF even gets there. So, a least a couple months could have passed, maybe longer, for Duncan to make all his recruiting stops.

He's not blackmailing Bryce, he ask because of respect, only if PC refuse then he invoke the Right of Conscription

If he's not there, if PC manage to escape and try to find Fergus, then where is Fergus? We only assumed that Howe attack is after Fergus left, but without Duncan appear Howe might attack right away. Maybe he stall the attack because of Duncan is there, so we can also assume Fergus died before leaving or got ambushed, surely Howe don't want to leave an heir of Cousland alive

Fergus always survives since he leaves for Ostagar before the attack happens. He is mentioned in DAA both by Oghren and in Nate's epilogue.
