I was inclined to believe that Alistair was being unreasonable in this scene, but then I wondered, "what if the shoe was on the other foot?"  What if your warden is a Cousland and Riordan tries to recruit Howe?  (If Riordan had decided to follow you after you freed him instead of seek medical aid, he might have done just that.)  If you're a Cousland, is there anyone here who would agree to that?  I wouldn't.  (By contrast, recruiting Howe might seem a good idea to a dwarf warden and even an elf warden if the choice has to be made before they find out what's going on in the alienage.

Good point, but slightly different case.

(As Commander? Yes. My Cousland would have welcomed Howe ... )

While putting the greater good above your personal feelings still is the right thing to do, it is true that sometimes it isn't that easy.

I'm not sure if Alistair's situation can be compared to those examples, though. He feels like Loghain is Duncan's murderer, but that is a bit of a stretch.

I think you're being too harsh on Alistair.  Remember, he was the junior Warden before the PC comes along.  He doesn't even know about the US.  For him, Duncan is the Grey Wardens.  Recruiting Loghain seems like a double betrayal to Alistair.  (He does not appear to appreciate that GWs recruit from the "rabble" as well as from the "cream of the crop."  My guess is he has no idea how Duncan ended up in the GWs.

Yeah.My guess is that he doesn't realize that lots of grey wardens are mostly the scum loghain is.He kinda thinks like calian that the grey wardens are super heroes and stuff.Don't get me wrong im on Alistair side,He clearly let you know that he want to kill loghain fron the beginning(your warden can even say that he prefers to join forces with loghain):"He just betrayed his own king! If Arl Eamon knew what he did at Ostagar, he would be the first to call for his execution!"

Hmmm.  I guess Morrigan was one since she turned her back on the Peacekeepers.

Well, they tried to kill her since she's been irreversibly contaminated. I think in that case it's justifiable.

Going back to the "traitor" question, Morrigan is the biggest traitor of all if you don't agree to the DR.  Aside from Zevran, every other companion joins you specifically because they want to help you fight the Blight.  Not so Morrigan; the DR seems to be her motivation from the start.  She doesn't like helping people; she's willing to let the undead have Redcliffe.  Even if you kill Flemeth for her, she abandons you if you don't give her what she wants.

Thanks god someone who understand the betrayal PoV and isn't self righteous about Morrigan.

I think Riordan would have not recruited Howe because unlike Loghain he wasn't a general nor an expert tactician nor his motivation to do what he did were in any way related to the blight,he was totally untrustworthy for all the nobles and unlike Loghain he really wanted the PC dead especially if elf or noble.

Riordan would probably have taken anyone willing. No doubt Howe would have gone out like Jory.

Leliana betrayed Orlais, although Leliana's Song makes this story somewhat convoluted, so I don't know.

Zevran betrays the Crows.

Wynne sort of betrays the Circle and Chantry after becoming an abomination.

Sten betrays the Qun when he loses control of himself and kills the peasants.

Shale betrayed her former master.

Oghren betrayed Branka.

Alistair... betrays the Templars if you get his approval high enough.

Ha! so all of them!LOL
