I really don't think it matters, other than the fact Bioware will undoubtedly milk the "Andromeda ver FemMC" trailers for forum/tumblr/Twitter brownie points.

I miss when the trailers were less about the MC and more about everyone else. I like Shepard (and Hawke, and so on) but the MC is the least interesting part because it's up to you to guide them. They don't make good trailer material.

Give me trailers that show some meaty gameplay and I so won't care whether a boy or a girl is pulling the trigger or tossing singularities around.

Yeah, is there anyone who really complains about gender when that happens? If we simply see a good game, usually we just think "Damn! I want to play that.."

No one cares about it, apart from the vocal minority who can't stand evil heteronormative white males.

One would think so. But...

Here's exhibit A, I suppose.

You have to admit, though. We do make evil look cool.

Well, I don't even think of the people complaining about "heteronormative white males" as gamers. They're academics and professional rabble rousers....they just latch on to anything with cultural power, because they think they can reform society through it. But they don't actually care what the medium is.

But gamers will have fun... we get our fix from something more abstract.

And people complaining about vocal minorities. They wouldn't be commenting if they didn't care.

Can't someone be both? I don't see why being a gamer and thinking that the world ought to be fixed where it's wrong are incompatible categories.

Sure, but I think the "gamer within" such a person would be persuaded more often (on abstract gameplay concepts). They know the value of those things. They wouldn't constantly be beating a drum. I could "talk shop" with that person, so that's fine with me. It isn't like I don't believe in social justice myself, but it isn't always relevant and it doesn't sum up the totality of life.

When someone can barely talk about games (be it digital or otherwise), something's wrong.

That'd be really cool to have her be the face of Andromeda after a trilogy of ManShep.

But I imagine the cover'll just use a generic silhouetted figure Dragon Age Inquisition style.

Why not? Not like it matters so long as you have a CC.

DAI had one of the most striking covers of all of their games - creating the dragon out of the negative space (and letting that take center stage over the protag) was terrific. Compared with the standard releases (ME2 and ME3 have possibly the ugliest standard release covers of any of the their games), it was a gem. The CE releases generally have better covers, presumably because they don't have to advertise Sheploo's dumb face to all the folks who shelled out 80 bucks for the fancy box.

People like their "iconic protagonists" I guess..

I'll never knock DAI's art direction. They did a good job. But even that was better in earlier implementations. Their original inquisitor concept was a rogue (cover is a warrior). In the same way their signature Hawke was a mage. They should have stuck with not only that image, but given the game a more rogue friendly feel too.

People would probably vote for blonde to win. Then you would get weirdos complaining "oh muh gawd stereotypical space barbie", then they'll make her ginger because that pleases people somehow.

It's truly bizarre how they ended up voting in favor of an even more uncommon and uniquely caucasian hair color over the blonde one.

I wouldn't exactly say John Shepard was adonis either although some might disagree.

I'm personally hoping there is no default face this time around and we will get different looking Ryders in trailers to see what CC is capable of.

/\ Absolutely AGREE WITH YOU!

I don't think the default shep was chosen because he was "adonis". From what I remember, they wanted an undefinable European mix or something, and also a believable enough soldier.

That said, he's still a decent looking guy. I'd prefer this than homeliness or uglyness. Or outright deformity. I need at least something that looks as good as the real me. Or better. lol. I don't escape to fantasy worlds, so I can shoot even lower than myself.

Some people can ignore social justice issues as they aren't part of those groups that have to deal with those issues. There's a term for that....

But, yeah, you can be both. I'm happy to see gaming companies taking these issues more seriously despite the whiny fans. :)

Would anyone be suprised if trans man and trans woman were a third and fourth option for gender?

No, its bioware and probably they will, and i wouldn't complain, i think its pretty good adding trans man > woman or woman > man, i personally will make a lovely Ryder trap just like kalindra chan

OK. I grew up being called a slanted rice cooker, a g00k, and having to fight multiple people at once. I've been chased by skinheads. Among other delightful things. I could tell you my whole sob story, but I won't bore you.

And I still don't care to see gaming subjects turn into outcries of "Racism!" or whatever.

The BSN Puritans / SJWs certainly will if the gender is female and is wearing a body fitting armour that shows t1ts, hips, and azz.

I think even some of them secretly like it. And some not so secretly.

Like that one sjw speaker.. Brianna Wu. She's actually a (not so good) game dev, but even her game had a bunch titillating Miranda clones in it. :D

That's fine. No one is telling you what you have to care about. Insinuating that people who do care about social justice aren't real gamers comes off as telling people what they can care about.

I'm curious, when you see a racist depiction in a game do you ever speak out?

You can be both but at the same time I think people need to pick their battles better rather than going after every little thing they see as an injustice.

Even looking just at "first world problems", this thread is complaining about what is purely a marketing gimmick.

Marketing is and always will be about what sells the most number of copies. The only reason they'd entertain the idea of using female Ryder as the face of ME:A is because they think it will sell more copies to appear more inclusive.

That's why I say it doesn't matter back on the first page. What we should be focused on is how the characters are represented in game. I'll take a million generic grizzled white guys on the covers of my games if it means we focus on not getting another Krem who exists to be a walking PSA rather than a good character.

There are quite a number of feminists with rape fantasies, so this wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. The left wing equivalents of Strom Thurmond essentially.
