Geez, with all this talk about racism and identity politics going on I could easily mistake BSN for the Bungie forums.

Yes, there is institutional racism. We're in agreement on that point. There is also racism on an individual level. If you live in a society that gives you power by virtue of the way it is set up, you don't experience racism. I don't know why this is so offensive to point out. Acknowledging you have power in some areas bothers people for some reason. At any rate, we're not going to get anywhere if you refuse to acknowledge the effects of the power dynamic inherent in race relations.

All this talk is irrelevant to the fact that your definition of racism is incorrect. Racism refers to racial prejudice. This is not hard to understand. When you try to redefine racism, you aren't helping solve social problems. You're doing the opposite. You're diminishing real problems that affect real people. There is a lot more to racism than just white people being mean to black people.

As for your talk of power dynamics... you shouldn't generalize. People are individuals first and members of a group second. One interaction between a white person and a black person might involve race. Another might not. It depends on the specific people and the specific context, not just broad social trends.

It's not offensive but it is semantics, because it's not the definition of what racism is. Racism, by definition, does not require that the offending party possess power over the offended party. The idea of that was only created by people who wanted to act like there was nothing wrong about being racist towards white people. It's not "keeping the white man down", but it is still racism.

Not to mention that as much as I would love to claim that I hold such power in society as a white guy because then I could actually get useful things done, I really don't. If I actually did hate black people it wouldn't change a damn thing.

Even my mom's own people (Thai) are racist sometimes. Some of them hate the Indians in their country and think the sections of the city stink.. or go as far as to say that Indians stink. They're also seen as money grubbing, the same way Jewish stereotypes are in the west. It's racism. And they're usually given the reputation as being the groovy Asian country.

Racism is everywhere.

Putting emphasis on the real problem with racism, power dynamics, makes the issues crystal clear. Denying the power dynamics diminishes the problems. No one has defined racism as "white people being mean to black people" other than you. That's an example of diminishing the problem. I'm here talking about power dynamics and the effects it has on minorities and you are recontextualizing the conversation to "meanies". So, uh, not sure where else to go with that.

Power dynamics exist on an individual level as well. No one has said every interaction is about race but the power dynamics don't just magic away even during individual interactions.

Are you even a minority? Just curious. Because people who excuse racism the way you do are usually white in my experience. Where it's white guilt and they arbitrarily heave all crimes in the world on themselves.

edit: I say this because some people are really hard on themselves.

Personally i dont care and when i saw the trailer i didn't realized that. But i'm seeing they are using this trailer to create and share a lot of articles rising the flag of female representativity, female leadership, feminism, equallity because the past trilogy a "generic white male" was starring the trailers, (but they're forgeting MF 2 actually had an female trailer and MF 3 had male and female version of the trailers and cinematic) bioware inclusion of moniritys an how us cis white male gamers are pissed with that.... I mean what the hell is that? this is just a fuking game with a fuking trailer that showed the fuking female default face of the protagonist first than the male's face. Why they are using this to start this gender war and political correctness bullshit over this incredible franchise? They're pushing a fight that doesn't exist, and then come the SJWs calling us "insecure white cis male" just because we don't agree with this bullshit, but they forget THEY'RE the insecure, they are creating those articles to fulfill their ego and bring this political issues of society over a game that was supposed to be just played and enjoyed.

You don't appear insecure, you appear frightened of marginalization.

There was a tweet by one of the devs, Mac Walters I believe, that stated there is no default Ryder. This could be slant to minimize vitriolic reactionary rhetoric but it may not be.

It is possible that as Shepard was named for the first American man in space and Ryder after the first American woman in space that Ryder in the opening stages of advertising may lean more towards the female but that isn't something to feel threatened about.

Also, both male and female Ryder's were in the EAPlay video. While male Ryder didn't have a speaking part there are simple reasons that could be which aren't conspiratorial plots against an egalitarian society.

Because it all fits under the umbrella of identity politics, and Bioware steadfastly refuses to give us stuff to actually talk about.

Just like this racist bioware employee? https://twitter.com/...6886784/photo/1

no, you don't

I find it funny that you are suggesting I am a racist based on a single comment.

I also find it offensive towards my person, and believe you have broken rules number 1 (being respectful and courteous) and 3 (as I believe a personal attack is taking place).

Next thread: why isn't default Ryder a transexual?

You see, the next one will be "Why isn't default Ryder a supermodel?"

Isn't the guy in the trailer also Ryder? We just didn't see his face yet. Or did we?...

That is entirely possible, and has been neither confirmed nor denied, as far as my knowledge reaches.

Follow-up thread; why isn't Ryder an alien? (w8 we already have that)

in a chain of threads, this happens:

Why isn't Ryder a reaper?

This hurts even Harbinger... :D

I'm not following "they would actually talk about games more if they cared". What does that mean? Are you saying that discussing social justice issues within gaming means that you don't care about games? Again, that's coming off as telling people what they can care about.

Exactly! They talk about the problems in games specifically because they care and want them to be better.

Now back on topic, I'm totally fine with FemRyder being the default face since I never use default characters anyways, also I'm pretty confident that Bioware will just give us a flip cover like with ME3 or they will make the gender of the cover character ambiguous.

Prefer to customise whenever I get the opportunity too. Only time I happily chose the default in a bioware game was fem Hawke. Looked better than anything I tried to create myself so I just settled lol.

On the other hand, I don't think we should celebrate them simply writing straight white people out of the squad.

As much as that may sound ridiculous at a glance there was only 1 straight white male squadmate in all 3 games and I'm assuming that Zaeed is straight when I say that(which is technically not confirmed to my knowledge). I can give you 1.5 because Kaidan pulled a "I'm Bi, you just didn't ask" on us in the third game. It's entirely possible to have a Mass Effect 3 squad with zero white men on it.

To be fair they apparently prioritized to fill the squad with a lot of hot chicks for straight (white is optional) males to bang instead.

I know I'm late to the party, but... Cuck?

Is it short for cuckold? (That's the most adorable wanna-be-tough-guy insult ever!)

Can I start calling people varlets again? Are we throwing down like it's 1689?

Also, you're less likely to be cuckholded if your partner thinks you're not an insecure jerk.

At any rate, I think they're avoiding too much default, since we've seen some gameplay with dudeRyder.

I can't wait for people to realize how stupid it makes them look when they unironically use "cuck" in a sentence, and it goes the way of things like "epic win/fail" in internet lingo.
