PUG stands for "pick-up game", which is an open game that anyone may join. It's not exclusive to video games. If you went to the park and saw some people rotating out of a game of basketball, that's a pick-up game too. Anyway, I still play on Xbox.

I probably should jump on to 360 at some point. Surely I can't end up getting Collectors first game yet again, right?

Not on the Wii-U, you can't. There *are* no Collectors there! And the mushroom power-ups are a godsend to a thin manifest.
